Inter sign ‘phenomenal’ Maicon

Inter have already begun planning for next season with the £4m signing of Monaco wing-back Douglas Maicon.

The quicksilver Brazilian – who is seen in his homeland as the natural successor to Cafu in the national team – was in Milan yesterday to sign a four-year contract with the Nerazzurri, starting in July.

Maicon, who underwent a medical before returning to Monaco, is one of the most talented full-backs in the world and is set to replace long-standing Inter captain Javier Zanetti.

The 24-year-old first burst onto the scene two years ago in the colours of Cruzeiro. His speed, tireless running, physical strength, ball control and passing ability soon attracted the attention of Monaco, who bought him at the start of last season.

Adriano, who plays with Maicon for Brazil, first alerted Inter to the player last summer, describing him as “a phenomenal right-sided player,” but moves to sign the attack-minded defender collapsed in the summer due to Inter’s already-filled quota of non-European players.

However, with Julio Cruz and Juan Sebastian Veron set to leave in the summer there will be room at Inter for the 12-time capped Brazil international.

Alessandro Del Piero made the remarkable revelation today that he could be leaving Juventus for English football.

The striker, who became the Bianconeri’s highest ever scorer with 185 goals this week, made the intriguing revelation in an interview in today’s La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I don’t want to stop here," said Del Piero. "My objectives go far beyond the goals I have scored – even though they have made me very happy."

With six Italian titles, a Champions League winner’s medal and a place in the pantheon of Italian greats assured, Pinturicchio has every reason to be happy.

But the 31-year-old is in no mood to sit still – and in fact may not even be staying in Turin for much longer.

Del Piero is not an automatic first choice starter in Fabio Capello’s star-studded side and, as he approaches the last few years of his career, it seems that Juve’s No 10 would like to try a foreign adventure in the Premiership.

"One thing I would never do is play for another Italian side," he added. "I would rather go to England - that is somewhere that really appeals to me.

"It is a bit too soon to decide about that yet, though," he continued. "I’ll be here definitely until June and then I’ll make a decision, but in the United Kingdom football is tastier."

Del Piero, who was signed from Padova as a youngster in 1993, is currently tied to the Stadio Delle Alpi team until June 2008.

Cagliari’s Mauro Esposito has said that he would like to join Napoli at the end of the season. "Once they have been promoted, we’ll see about my transfer," he said.

Esposito, who scored in Cagliari’s 3-2 defeat by Inter at the weekend, is from Napoli and would love to make a dream come true by joining the Serie C outfit, on condition that they go up to Serie B at the end of this term.

"Until June I’ll stay at Cagliari," he said. "Once they have been promoted to Serie B, we’ll see about my transfer."

Esposito enjoyed a remarkable campaign with the Sardinian side last year, scoring 16 goals in 34 matches.

But this season has been more of a struggle and now the 26-year-old wants to move on to the side he supported as a boy – provided they don’t fail in their promotion bid.

The former Pescara and Udinese attacker insists, however, that his desire to join Napoli in no way compromises his ambitions as a footballer.

"In June I’m still hoping to wear the Azzurri shirt," he added.

At the moment the forward is a long way away from entering Marcello Lippi’s thinking.

However, with a strong second half to the season with improving Cagliari, Esposito could give the Italy Coach a striker selection headache.

Bij de Paraguyaanse international Julio Gonzalez is een arm geamputeerd, zo maakte zijn Italiaanse club Vicenza vandaag bekend.

De 24-jarige aanvaller lag in het ziekenhuis sinds hij vier weken geleden betrokken raakte bij een auto-ongeluk. Het lijkt onwaarschijnlijk dat Gonzalez zijn loopbaan kan voortzetten.

Gonzalez was bezig aan zijn tweede seizoen bij Vicenza. Deze jaargang stond hij boven de topscorerslijst van zijn club met 8 doelpunten in 15 wedstrijden.
