Some of the dogs had stayed at the den site while others chased the mother from the area. One of the hunters returned to the den on Monday and found that the mother had not returned and could hear three cubs crying from a distance He became concerned and called Conservation Officer Mearns on Monday night to check out the den and save the cubs if possible.
Officer Mearns went to the den site early Tuesday morning and found a small female already dead, apparently from exposure. Two other cubs were missing.
