The Netherlands is one of Europe's smallest and most densely populated countries. The name “Netherland” is derived from the Dutch word “neder” meaning “low.” When the name Holland is used, it actually refers to the two Western coastal provinces, North and South Holland. Centuries ago the Northwest of the Netherlands was covered with trees. That's where the name Holland comes from; "holt-land", which means woodland.
Dutch, also known as Netherlandic, is a West Germanic language spoken by about 25 million people worldwide. As well as being the first language in the Netherlands, it is the language of the SUBWAY® menu there. In addition, it's also spoken in the northern half of Belgium and a tiny northwestern corner of France.
The story of the Dutch boy, “The Legend of Hans Brinker,” who supposedly put his finger in the dyke to prevent a flood, was actually a literary invention by the American writer Mary Elizabeth Mapes Dodge, who was born in New York.
Along with windmills, wooden shoes and tulips, the Netherlands may be best known for the lasting influences its painters have had on the art world. Fifteenth-century painter Hieronymous Bosch used distorted creatures and agonized people in works; Rembrandt’s masterful use of light and shadow distinguished creations; Frans Hals and Jan Vermeer were unparalleled in their work in portraitures and scenes of daily life; Vincent van Gogh’s early paintings, including Potato Eaters, were painted in the Netherlands; Piet Mondriaan has given us his cubic De Stijl movement; and Maurits Escher has contributed a number of mind-boggling designs to modern world.
Another, perhaps less famous artist has made its way into the Netherlands recently: The SUBWAY® Sandwich Artist. The SUBWAY® Sandwich Artist, found in SUBWAY® locations throughout the Netherlands, specialize in creating “overheerlijk” (delicious) SUBWAY® sandwiches right before your eyes (a feat we’re pretty sure none of the above mentioned artists were able to do – at least not on a regular basis!).
The most popular SUBWAY® sandwich in the Netherlands is the Roasted Chicken Breast Sub and is available in Eindhoven, home of the first and most popular SUBWAY® restaurant in the Netherlands. Eindhoven, a modern, bustling city that is actually one of the nation’s oldest, first welcomed the budding Sandwich Artists and their pallet of meats, cheeses and vegetables in March of 2000.
In keeping with the tradition of becoming active in the community, the SUBWAY® restaurants in the Netherlands have provided support to numerous youth and student events.
Recognizing the Netherlands as an important European financial center, the SUBWAY® restaurant chain has opened its European regional office in Amsterdam. The office was opened in order to help the chain provide better support for its franchisees in the Netherlands and in other European countries as well. Another of the staff’s charges is to actively seek those who embrace the entrepreneurial spirit to become future SUBWAY® franchisees.
