The number of passengers was not immediately available.
Smoke billowed from a wooded area near Highway 401, Canada’s busiest highway as emergency crews sped to the scene. A portion of the plane’s wing could be seen jutting from the trees.
Peel police say the craft was an Air France passenger jet that was attempting to land when it ran into trouble.
“An Air France plane landing on runway 2-4 left went off the end of the runway the area of Convert Drive and the 401 area in Mississauga,” said Sgt. Glyn Griffiths.
“Unknown at the time of any injuries. Flame was seen from the plane. And full response by all emergency vehicles.”
He couldn’t say whether any passengers had been removed from the plane.
Reutersquote:TORONTO (Reuters) - A plane was on fire after apparently running off the runway at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, CP-24 Television said on Tuesday.
The television showed pictures of flames and smoke from the fuselage of the jet, apparently a large, wide-body jet. CNN said it appeared that there were 200 people aboard.

There is no word on the condition of the passengers and crew members on board the A340. The plane has a capacity of about 200 people.
The Air France jet burst into flames after skidding off a runway at Toronto's Pearson Airport Tuesday.
The incident happened at about 3:50 p.m., as most operations at the airport were grounded because of severe thunderstorms in the area.
There are reports that the airplane was trying to land in a downpour when it skidded off the runway just metres from one of Toronto's busiest roads, Highway 401.
The jet crashed through barriers and ended up in a small ravine at the far west end of the airport, the fuselage tipped down and the aircraft's tail in the air.
Rescue crews are on the scene.
