Gerd Muller speelde in zijn carriere die duurde van 1963 tot 1980 490 competitie wedstrijden voor Bayern Munchen waarin hij het indrukwekkende aantal van 477 doelpunten liet aantekenen. In zijn interlandcarriere maakte hij 68 doelpunten in slechts 62 wedstrijden.
Verder won hij 3 opeenvolgende jaren de EC1 wat ook niet veel mensen gegeven is .
In Amerika speelde hij 3 seizoenen bij Fort Lauderdale strikers waarvoor hij "slechts" 38 doelpunten maakte en de League Final verloor
Op het WK van '70 maakte hij er 10 in 6 duels.
In een ding was Der Bomber dus erg goed: Tore machen!

Born in Nördlingen, Germany, he began his football career at the TSV 1861 Nördlingen. Müller joined FC Bayern München in 1964 where he teamed up with future stars Franz Beckenbauer and Sepp Maier. The club, which would go on to become the most successful German club in history was then still in the Regionalliga Süd (Regional League South), which was one level below the Bundesliga at the time. After one season, Bayern Munich advanced to the Bundesliga and started a long string of successes. With his club, Müller amassed titles during the 60s and 70s: He won the German Championship four times, the German Cup four times, the European Champions' Cup three times, the Intercontinental Cup once, and the European Cup Winners' Cup once. A supremely opportunistic goal-scorer, he also became German top scorer seven times and European top scorer twice. Müller scored 66 goals in his 74 appearances at European cups, still a record.

Müller also participated in the 1972 European Championship, becoming top scorer with 4 goals and winning the Championship with the German team.
Life after football
After Müller ended his career in 1982, he fell into a slump and acquired an alcohol addiction. But his former companions at Bayern Munich convinced him to go through alcohol rehabilitation. When he emerged, they gave him a job as an amateur coach at Bayern Munich, where he still works as of 2005

Van Basten valt er net buiten maar Gerd Muller staat er vast in.
De beste spits ooit. Net als George Best ook nog eens een boeiende geschiedenis.
Ik heb hem zien voetballen, geloof me hij was net zo goed als Romario. Alleen hij won tien keer zo veel prijzen.
De klootzak werd wel wereldkampioen tegen ons, maar dat mag de objectiviteit niet in de weg zitten.

Niet vergelijkbaar.
Gerd (der Bomber) had de eigenschap overal steeds op de juiste plaats te staan voor een intikker a la Van Nistelrooy, Romario had soms briljante individuele acties.
Ik heb Müller destijds zo vaak vervloekt als ie er bij Bayern of in der Manschaft tegen een club van ons weer eentje inlegde.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- Now, Romario only has Pele to beat.
The Vasco striker scored his 831st goal this week, matching the career total of retired all-star Zico. Only Pele, with 1,281 goals, has more.
Goal No. 831 came Wednesday on a penalty kick that gave Vasco a 1-0 victory over Sao Paulo in the opening quarterfinal match of the Rio-Sao Paulo tournament.
If Pele remains a distant target, the 36-year-old Romario shows no signs of slowing down. His 21 goals led the league last year, and he is third in the Rio-Sao Paulo tournament with 13.
"I still have the objective of reaching 1,000 goals, but overtaking Pele is a lot more difficult," Romario said in an interview on Pele's web site, www.pele.net.
The milestone revived a long-standing debate over which player was better, Zico or Romario.
Romario's supporters note that he reached the 831-goal mark in just 880 games, while it took Zico 1,176. Zico's defenders point out that the Flamengo star was essentially a playmaker, while Romario's job was always simply putting the ball in the net.
"It's not because one player has scored or will score more goals that he's better," veteran coach Mario Zagallo told the Rio daily O Globo. "Zico was a player of international renown and a great human being. He is hors concours."
Former all-star defender Nilton Santos took the other side.
"Romario is exceptional," he was quoted as saying. "When Zico played, he was my favorite. Today, however, I prefer Romario."
Brazil's coach Luiz Felipe Scolari apparently remains unswayed by the achievement. He has resisted a national campaign to bring back Romario for this summer's World Cup, leaving him off the team for a warmup game with Portugal next Wednesday.
Sports illustrated
Romário is the 2nd highest scorer in the history of professional football, being surpassed only by Pelé. On March 23, 2005 scored his 900th goal (official FIFA count).

Gerd Muller was an old-fashioned centre-forward of awesome efficiency whose skill and opportunism enabled him to become one of the most distinguished forwards in the history of the game.

He scored 14 goals in two World Cups, a record which still stands, and in the German League he was no less productive, putting away 365 goals in 472 games.
But if that sounds impressive, then the statistic of 68 goals for West Germany in 62 international appearances almost calls for a verification of the statistics.
No wonder his fans called him "The Bomber".
The German, who was born in Nordlingen in northern Bavaria had made an unspectacular start in football, having been rejected early in his career by Bayern Munich after coaches decided the 18-year old was "too fat and slow".
Innate
But as Muller began to amass a hatful of goals with Nordlingen, Bayern were forced to re-assess their decision and in 1964 ate humble pie and signed him.

He helped Bayern Munich to an unprecedented run of success in the German League that established their supremacy, winning four German Cups, four German championships and a Cup Winners' Cup in 1967.
With Sepp Maier, Paul Breitner and Franz Beckenbauer, Muller formed a "dream team" in the early 1970s.

Muller broke English hearts in the quarter-finals of the 1970 World Cup in Mexico by brilliantly poaching a late goal to complete West Germany's extraordinary fightback and victory in the match (3-2).
He scored 10 goals in 6 matches in that tournament (West Germany reached the semi-finals), including a hat-trick against Bulgaria, before helping West Germany to their European Championship triumph two years later.
Things got even better in 1974 when West Germany continued their outstanding international form by defeating Holland 2-1 in the World Cup final in the Olympic stadium in Munich, with Muller scoring the winner.
He savoured European Cup wins in three consecutive years between 1974 and 1976 with Bayern, taking the club to heights where previously only Real Madrid had been able to survive.
Decline
However, a run-in with the West German football Federation (which led to his decision not to play for the West German team again) and persistent back injuries undermined his phenomenal progress.
As the inevitable decline set in, he saw his chance in the lucrative North American soccer league and signed for Fort Lauderdale in Florida, where he teamed up with other fading stars like George Best.
Opening a bar in the city was nearly his downfall - the long and avuncular arm of the Bayern Munich family had to come to his rescue after he found himself with serious alcohol problems.
Bayern took him under their wing and he became a technical assistant to the second team, whose strikers no doubt hoped that just a little of Muller's glorious ability (photo)rubbed off on them.
