REQUIEM: AVENGING ANGEL

He doesn't act like an angel...
By JAMES ANTHONY
Whether you believe in life after death or not, one thing is certain, the first few levels of Requiem: Avenging Angel will have you hoping like hell - that there is no hell.
Set in purgatory, the initial levels are freaky, frightening and the sound will have you constantly checking over your shoulder.
You are Malachi, an angel of God, sent down to earth to save the world from a group of dark angels known as The Fallen, whose mission is to destroy humanity. If you fail, and your evil cousins win, then God will destroy humanity. Tough job, huh?
Now just in case you are rolling your eyes, thinking what sort of a role is being an angel, we'll just describe Malachi. He's over 100 kilos, shaven headed, tough and loves doing horrible things to bad guys. In short, this angel's no wusser!
Neither is the world he enters. People are beaten to death and executed on the streets, there is a massive number of well-armed militia to get through and, while Requiem will appeal to thinkers as well as doers, it is a very bloody environment to get involved in.
The graphics are sensational. Buildings, objects and characters are marvellously rendered and, without trying too hard on bad puns, the victims of your bullets are marvellously rended. Bits (large ones) fly off them at one heck of a pace when hit by anything other than your initial pistol. It's effective but needs a number of hits to knock down an armoured guard.
Other very fine weapons include an assault rifle (terrific), a combat shotgun (very terrific), a grenade launcher (very, very terrific) a railgun (what can I say) and a sniper rifle (spot on).
In addition, Malachi regains his supernatural powers and his divine essence can be used for all sorts of nifty things. Flying, blasting, sending plagues, speeding up, blood boiling and healing others is all on hand, literally.
Malachi's quest is a progression of mini missions that takes him through all sorts of hazardous places.
Purgatory is filled with weeping souls and tortured screams, not to mention nasty evil brutes, and the security troops in the real world are numerous and trigger happy.
Finding your way around is a little difficult at times but you can guarantee at every dead end there is a way out. Often it may require a bit more thought, or sometimes a slight backtrack to an obvious answer.
Requiem: Avenging Angel is right up there with Half-Life and 3DO deserves huge congratulations for producing a fantastic game.
