Major quake strikes off coast of Northern CaliforniaA major earthquake struck about 80 miles off the coast of Northern California on Tuesday night, prompting a tsunami warning along the Pacific coast.
The 7.0-magnitude quake struck at about 7:50 p.m. about 90 miles west southwest of the coastal community of Crescent City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Web site.
A tsunami warning is in effect from the California-Mexico border all the way north to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.Residents were being evacuated from low-lying areas of Crescent City, KCBS radio reported.

Major Quake Strikes Off California CoastEUREKA -- A major earthquake occurred at 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday. The magnitude 7.0 event occurred off the Northern California coast approximately 90 miles west of Eureka. So far there are no reports of injuries or damage. An additional minor quake occurred seven minutes later, a 3.9 magnitude event approximately four miles northwest of Geysers, California.
A tsunami bulletin has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. No destructive Pacific-wide tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.
However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action.
