Serie B: Perugia risk relegation

After just missing out on promotion earlier this month, Perugia now risk dropping down to Serie C1 due to financial problems.

The club has not been registered for the new season and must find fresh funds to avoid sliding into a bankruptcy situation.

“By the start of next week I hope to have another £8m at my disposal,” explained President Alessandro Gaucci. “We were unable to meet the deadlines due to technical difficulties.”

However, the son of fiery former chief Luciano Gaucci admits that the scenario is not a happy one for the fans.

“I don’t want to lull anyone into a false sense of security, as our chances of salvaging the club are very small,” he added. “We are aware that we are running late in this race to register. I rushed round the country and put all my personal assets on the line to get an advance payment, but unfortunately it didn’t arrive in time for the deadline.”

There is still hope that Perugia can play in Serie B next season, as the authorities could accept a slightly late payment to balance the books.

“It would be convenient for many people, including the Federation, as everyone would have the money they were entitled to. Our crisis was sparked by many different factors, including the collapse of pay-per-view company Gioco Calcio, our relegation and failure to sell Chris Obodo, Jay Bothroyd and Zeljko Kalac in January.”

In theory, if Perugia are excluded from the Serie B Championship then Napoli could take the step up. The sides ahead of them in the pecking order would be Vicenza, Pescara, Catanzaro and Venezia, but all of these are dealing with their own financial worries.

Meanwhile, Torino are also under investigation for a bond that covered the outstanding £12m in taxes. “We were the victims of fraud and will clarify everything in record time,” assured Granata lawyer Carlo Mussa.

Toro need £23m to survive

After Perugia, now Torino need to find £23m by July 9 or face possible expulsion from Serie A and the bankruptcy of the 99-year-old club.

The Granata earned promotion following a play-off victory against Perugia earlier this month and registered for the new season thanks to a bond to cover their existing debts. However, that paperwork was falsified by an agent who Torino are now suing for fraud. It’s a trap that also caught Roma and Napoli in recent years, though they were given extra time to find a solution.

This leaves Torino just six days to find a bank that will cover them for the £23m in outstanding taxes or face expulsion from the top flight and possibly bankruptcy.

When Fiorentina failed to find sufficient funds to register, they were forced to start again with a new club in Serie C2, but last summer the Lodo Petrucci rule was introduced to allow these clubs to resume one Division below. Napoli took advantage of that change to play in Serie C1.

Should Torino, who were formed in 1906 and have won seven Scudetto titles, be excluded from the top flight then Bologna, Treviso or Ascoli will be promoted in their place.

“If we are called to play in Serie A then we will be ready and financially stable. A football club must be run like a business and that means balancing the books” noted Treviso President Setten. Ascoli patron Roberto Benigni added, “We are prepared for any eventuality and are following events closely.”

The Covisoc will give its verdict on the state of Italian club finances on July 9 and the sides can lodge an appeal three days later.

Perugia are also at risk and could be thrown out of the Serie B Championship if they fail to bring together £8m to register.

Viola confirm Gamberini swoop

Defender Alessandro Gamberini has today completed his move from relegated Bologna to Fiorentina.

The 23-year-old has been linked with the Viola for the last week and has finally agreed terms with the Tuscan giants.

Gamberini, a former Under-21 international, has put pen to paper on a contract until June 2009.

Fiorentina, who conceded 50 goals in 38 Serie A games last term, paid 2.2m. Euro for the stopper who was raised through the Bologna youth system.

Vieri ‘agrees’ Milan deal

Christian Vieri is reportedly just days away from signing a contract with Milan following his shock Inter exit.

Whispers in the peninsula this evening insist that the striker has agreed a two-year deal after he became a free agent on Friday.

Vieri, who terminated his Nerazzurri terms by mutual consent, will allegedly sign next week once he passes his medical.

The Italian international is currently on holiday in Sardinia but will reportedly swap one San Siro club for another, despite interest from numerous other clubs across Europe.

Vieri could be joined by Alberto Gilardino in the new campaign, whose proposed transfer from Parma may be closer to completion tomorrow.

"The player will return from his holidays on Tuesday," his agent Beppe Bonetto told the Fiorentina.it website.

"That is when we will get a definite answer from Milan regarding their intentions towards him."

Should a Rossoneri switch collapse, the 23-year-old could still be heading to the city of Milan after Inter confirmed they were keen on him too.

"We’ve been chasing Gilardino for some time," owner Massimo Moratti told the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

"We admittedly don’t really need to make any big changes to our offensive options but we are talking about a really good player."

Palermo set Toni price

Palermo have confirmed they are ready to sell star striker Luca Toni if an offer of at least £11m is made.

The Italian international has been linked with a summer exit but President Maurizio Zamparini insists he won’t let him go on the cheap.

"Luca Toni will not be leaving here for less than £11m," the Sicilian chief told the stadionews.it website.

Fiorentina are very interested in the forward but have reportedly only bid £11m for Toni and teammate Cristian Zaccardo.

However, Zamparini is unimpressed by the way Viola sporting director Pantaleo Corvino is conducting himself.

"He’s always tried to be crafty," added Zamparini. "He targets 20 players and causes great chaos. I think he’s simply creating smoke for no reason."

Toni has netted 50 League goals in two seasons at the Renzo Barbera but talks over a new contract have seemed to spoil their relationship.

The former Brescia man said last week that things would not be the same at Palermo anymore, a statement which has angered his employer.

"He is still too much of a kid to take part in important discussions, he should leave them up to me," concluded Zamparini.

Meanwhile, Palermo are reportedly close to signing Galatasaray goalkeeper Faryd Ali Mondragon.

The Colombian shot-stopper, 34, still has one-year left on his contract with the Turkish giants.
