Zuiker wants to overhaul CSI: NY

BANFF -- CSI: New York is about to get a Big Apple sized makeover.
CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker says the show's dark, underground feel is turning viewers off and desperately needs to be changed.
"In television, you don't know what you've got until you know what you've got," he says. "What we've got is very gritty and it's not working. We're going to lighten it up to get people to come back."
The grey look of the spinoff, its seedy sets and graphic storylines will be overhauled before the new season starts up next fall, says Zuiker, speaking at the Banff World Television Festival.
"The mistake we made was having no windows -- there has been too much of the underbelly of New York shown ... we're going to be in a high-rise with views of the city and we're going to tell lighter stories that could only be told in New York."
Zuiker, one of the most coveted screen and television writers in the business, says 100% of his energy is focused on making CSI: New York a success. That, he adds, is why a CSI movie won't happen anytime soon.
"We have joked about a movie involving all three CSIs, but I don't know," he says. "I originally spoke to (executive producer) Jerry Bruckheimer about that, but he feels it's not the right time."
And timing is something the creators of the mega-hit crime series knows a thing or two about.
Zuiker, a former Las Vegas tram driver who was surviving off ketchup sandwiches seven years ago, couldn't have picked a better time to pitch his show idea for CSI, inspired by the Discovery Channel forensic series The New Detectives in 1998.
"I don't watch TV which is probably why it felt fresh to them -- there was nothing like it on TV. They thought it was great."
Zuiker didn't know much about forensic science, so he spent six weeks with the Las Vegas Police Department's forensic unit.
"One day I was able to ride along with them. I saw a lot of dead bodies ... and a suspect hiding under the bed. I got a big education there."
The rest, as they say, is history.
