DeGraw Working On 'Eclectic' New Disc

"Eclectic" is the word used by Gavin DeGraw to describe the much-anticipated follow up to his platinum J Records debut, "Chariot." Of the 20 songs currently in the mix, the New York native says styles he's attacking include comparisons to Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Maroon 5.
"I'm not marrying myself to any one thing," the singer/songwriter tells Billboard.com.
"I'm really experimenting with styles. I'm not making the most avant-garde thing in the world but I'm definitely attacking a lot of different types of material."
DeGraw hopes to be finished recording in October with a January release date for his as-yet-untitled sophomore release. Songs expected to make the final cut are "Medicate the Kids," "Cop Stop" and "Sometimes You Need a Few Drinks to Fall in Love."
Released in July 2003, "Chariot" peaked at No. 103 on The Billboard 200. A year later, the set was reissued with a bonus disc with acoustic versions of the album's cuts. "Chariot - Stripped" peaked at No. 53 on the album chart. Together, the titles have sold nearly 1.1 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
With his first album producing hit singles "Chariot," "Follow Through" and "I Don't Want To Be" (the latter pegged as theme song to WB series "One Tree Hill"), DeGraw feels he's successfully eschewed any pressure to write another pop hit.
"I feel like the public in general is in such a great reactionary period of rejecting the over-pop type mentality of what goes on with music, it's almost like anybody's game and anything is game," DeGraw says. "Anything is acceptable musically, lyrically. It's almost a better time than ever to be putting music out there."
In addition to teasing fans with the recently released digital single "We Belong Together," which was certified gold this past March, DeGraw is boarding a train for a whistle stop trip across America as headliner of the Miller Lite Taste Revolution tour. The 12-stop jaunt features DeGraw performing aboard the passenger train, as well as a club headliner in eight cities. This includes tonight's May 18 kick-off show at the Avalon in Los Angeles.
Once the railway outing is over, DeGraw will balance his schedule between finishing the album and touring commitments, which include late summer European festival dates.
"It's just something I get to do to stay accessible, stay involved and tap into society and see what people are into," says DeGraw, who was spotted in the audience at last night's "American Idol" results show. "It's just a great opportunity for me and I think on my own personal boredom level, I have to be on the road."

Jammer, was wel benieuwd naar nieuw materiaal. Al vind ik "Sometimes You Need a Few Drinks to Fall in Love." wel één van de slechtste titels van een nummer ooit...
Ik vind 'm juist wel droog. Alleen moet ie eens ophouden altijd PRECIES hetzelfde verhaaltje van tevoren te vertellen. Ik vind 't 1 van de leukste live nr's, als de hele band mee gaat bleren om Gavin's piano heen verzameld
Maar ik vind nummers als Mistake, Relative, Free en Control misschien nog wel beter. Misschien gaat ie de overige nr's die de album cut maken nog wel weinig live spelen. Want dat is natuurlijk de crap van dingen als archive.org... zijn fans kennen zijn nr's al van buiten voordat ie dat album uberhaupt uitbrengt, waardoor "nieuw" nog niet echt "nieuw" meer is

Dat ik A Few Drinks wel een leuke titel vind... Maar dat ik vind dat ie sterkere unreleased nummers heeft. En dat ik hoop dat er op zijn nieuwe album ook nog echt nieuwe nr's staan en niet een compilatie van wat ie al 3 jaar live speelt?

I guess every message starts with "Oh, Gavin you're so cool and fantastic", so I just did the same.
In august you'll be playing here, in Holland. Your setlists always includes some covers, mostly very big international superhits. These are great songs and you cover them even greater. But I was thinking it would be greatest if you played a very good Dutch song during your gig in Vredenburg, Utrecht.
Me and my girlfriend thought about this and despite we know the chance is small you'll really play one, we made a 'I-would-love-to-here-Gavin-sing-these"-selection.
Here are some titles we thought of:
Anouk - Sacrifice
Beautiful song about love and the pain of it, mostly played on acoustic guitar, but we wonder how it sounds on pianio sung by a man...
Golden Earring - When the lady smiles
Just listen and you know why we chose this one.
Kane - So glad you made it
Dutch rockband. Normally not played on piano (guitars, drums, bass, Hammet sometimes). But we thought you can experiment easily with this song and arrange something and OF COURSE you have your own band.
This is it. We don't expect anything; it would be great though.

En 't gaat me nog niet eens zo zeer om Kane (alhoewel ik moet toegeven dat ik ze écht niet leuk vind). Het zou lam zijn als Gavin (of welke andere buitenlandse artiest dan ook) een Nederlandse band/artiest zou coveren op verzoek van iemand anders. Die covers die hij wél speelt zijn een soort eerbetoon aan zijn eigen idolen of mensen die hem inspireren. De gemiddelde Nederlandse band vind ik niet in dat rijtje (van veelal klassiekers) horen en bovendien vind ik 't niet eens echt zijn stijl. Zou daarom dus ook totaal niet in zijn show passen. But that's just me...
