Op de site van Tom staat het volgende in zijn dagboek:December 22nd, 2005, New York
It’s cold here in New York, and yet again I have the wrong clothes. Thank God for the transport strike which means I can keep fit and warm by jogging everywhere - I can also work up a tremendous amount of heat arguing with cab drivers, all of whom are sending their kids to Harvard with the proceeds of the last few days extortionate fares. Except of course they’re not, but the people who own the companies are. Bastards.
Right now I have turned off the mobile phone, I am ignoring emails and have put the ‘gone fishing’ sign up on the door so I can concentrate on writing new songs. Or I might actually go fishing – who knows? I need some time away from touring, that’s for sure, but I’ll probably go mad if don’t do some live shows next year. See how I feel I suppose.
This year was a strange year for me, I released a record – no really, I did – and toured a lot. Lots and lots. And lots. And toured some more. And went mad. And then went to Niger, and got some perspective back.
Those of you who came to shows, you made it the best tour for me. And those friends who opened for me and accompanied us on our travels - you kept me sane. Especially Chris Stills, Joe Purdy and his band, and Kevin Devine. And thanks to Tori Amos for having me along for an extended summer holiday. We had a blast. And to my band, as ever, I owe you. No really, I owe you. I promise to pay you all by January…….2007. And I’d especially like to thank Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicole Kidman for those perfume ads they’re running on tv. Hilarious. You must be proud.
Yes, there’s a new look site. It’s a work in progress, I wanted to make it simpler and more streamlined, and offer some new things – not sure what yet, but I’m sure you’ll tell me (or new man Chris) what’s right and wrong, and what you’d like to see. We will then probably ignore you – just so you know.
So here it is, merry Non-Religious-Specific Holiday period to all of you. Take care, thanks once again for your support – like I said, this was a weird year for many of us - but we kept touring and you kept showing up, and in the end that really is all that matters to me.
And chocolate. I like chocolate.
P.S. look Ma! My name in lights. There was a strike on that day too. What is it with me arriving in a country and people downing tools and taking to the streets? Must be the revolutionary leader in me. I swear, the McRae dictatorship is one album away – watch out Gwyneth, Nicole. You’ll be first.
Bij vlagen hilarisch!
