CHELSEA IN £10m SWOOP FOR DUTCH WONDERKID
Exclusive By Paul Smith
CHELSEA have agreed a £10million fee with Dutch giants Feyenoord for their 19-year-old striker Salomon Kalou.
The Ivory Coast born marksman will not move to Stamford Bridge until the summer, however, because he must wait at least three months to obtain the Dutch passport vital to his involvement in English football.
The red tape preventing the move has boosted Arsenal's hopes of swiping the player from under their rivals' noses.
Like Chelsea, Arsenal have been monitoring Kalou's progress in Holland and remain quietly confident that, given the choice, the youngster will opt to move to Highbury ahead of Stamford Bridge.
Kalou is widely regarded as the most talented young striker in European football, and his all round game has been compared to that of Arsenal's Thierry Henry.
Dutch boss Marco van Basten has almost guaranteed Kalou a place in the national side when he attains his passport - news that has infuriated officials from the Ivory-Coast, who have been snubbed every time they have attempted to call the player up for international duty.
Chelsea, who were aware of growing interest in the player throughout Europe moved swiftly to secure a secret agreement with Feyenoord back in November.
Billionaire owner Roman Abramovich and the club's chief executive, Peter Kenyon, flew by private jet to Holland to personally negotiate the player's transfer.
However, as yet, no agreement has been formally struck with the player and his advisers, giving rise to renewed optimism from Arsenal that they can clinch his signature.
Meanwhile, Scott Parker has been told his Chelsea future is safe, despite the arrival of Jiri Jarosik.
Parker is currently sidelined until the beginning of March after breaking a bone in his foot just before Christmas.
Jose Mourinho wasted no time in bringing in Czech international Jarosik to bolster his squad - leading to questions over whether Parker has a future at Stamford Bridge.
But Mourinho believes the England midfielder is the natural long-term successor to Claude Makelele and has made it clear he has no intention of selling him.
Parker struggled to make an impact at the start of the season, but since getting a chance in the first team he has impressed Mourinho with his ability to clean up in the heart of midfield in a similar way to Makelele.
More likely to be heading out of Chelsea is former Real Madrid midfielder Geremi, who has hardly featured under Mourinho since the opening six weeks of the season.
The Cameroon international is resigned to having to leave Stamford Bridge - but Mourinho does not want to let anyone else leave during the January transfer window as he looks to maintain the challenge for four trophies.
