Dit is absoluut een van dé beste films van Chaplin en tegelijk een geniale parodie op Adolf Hitler. (en dat net voor de oorlog was uitgebroken)
Absoluut een must voor elke filmliefhebber om gezien te hebben !
(gaat lege videoband opsporen)
Ben erg indruk moet ik zeggen, zat een veel serieuzere ondertoon aan dan ik had verwacht (heb alleen als klein ventje Chaplin-films gezien) ondanks de slapstick-momenten die er in zaten.
Bezien in het licht van de latere holocaust misschien qua onderwerp wat moeilijk verteerbaar voor sommigen, maar een rake parodie op Hitler/dictatuur is het absoluut.
Op naar City Lights dan maar!

Dit bewijst toch dat Chaplin voor iemand die in de VS woonde toch enorm goed de ontwikkelingen in Nazi-Duitsland had gevolgd, want zelfs voor de VS was Hitler toen nog een "bevriend staatshoofd" , van een nieuwe wereldoorlog was nog geen sprake (ook al spreekt Chaplin er zelf al van in de film , zie bv het begin "Tussen de 2 wereldoorlogen door ...") ...
Voor een film in het prille begin van de oorlog vind ik deze héél vooruitziend hoor.
