The mystery surrounding Greek judo star Eleni Ioannou's fight for life has gripped Athens.
Ioannou and her boyfriend both remain critical after jumping from the same third-floor balcony in Athens.
Ioannou jumped from her apartment early on Saturday night. Her boyfriend, Giorgios Chrisostomidis, made a copy-cat jump two days later.
"This is a case of passion," said a police official. "Police are treating both cases as attempted suicides."
It has emerged the pair, who are both in the city's Red Cross Hospital, were prompted into the action after a lovers' tiff.
Chrisostomidis, a former drug addict, was reportedly overcome with jealousy at the thought of his 20-year-old girlfriend moving into the Olympic Village for the duration of the Games.
"The fact that she had helped him escape drugs had made him love her pathologically," said newspaper Eleftheros Typos.
"As he told police in his statement, the prospect of a short time apart upset him and his insecurity led him to fear he would lose her.
"They had a verbal fight, and he slapped her. She slapped him back in panic and then ran off to the balcony and jumped."
Ioannou has undergone emergency surgery but a spokesman said: "Nothing has changed, she's still in a critical condition."
Police questioned Chrisostomidis and released him without charge but, racked with guilt, the 24-year-old felt compelled to jump as well.
"On Monday noon, Giorgos was eating with his grandmother in the flat, when suddenly he told her 'I want to go to Eleni', left the table and leapt from the same spot on the balcony," Eleftheros Typos added.
"He had put himself on trial and condemned himself."
Ioannou is a competitor in the 78kg-plus event and, despite only four years of experience, she had won three national championships and a bronze medal in the Balkan Championships.
Yiannis Papadoyiannakis, the head of the Greek team, said Ioannou's injury in the Nea Ionia district of the city had "brought a sadness" and "cast a shadow".
"We will do everything to keep the team calm," he said. "If her condition improves, it will obviously improve the climate in the team."
Her coach Giorgos Boutakis added: "She got through a tough preparation period, there was also pressure from her relationship, and that is how we got here. I ask all Greeks to make a wish for her."
