Bari docked point for fan violence

In a new approach from the Disciplinary Commission, Bari have been docked a point after a flare struck Cesena goalkeeper Giovanni Indiveri.

The incident occurred during last night’s 1-1 draw and saw the ‘keeper stretchered off with blood pouring from his ear after the explosion less than a metre away from his position.

Indiveri was taken to hospital and kept in overnight for tests, but was released today with the all clear.

In previous years, when a player has been substituted due to an injury from objects thrown from the stands, the team is automatically given the victory.

However, changes to the rules in Italy will maintain the original result and dock the club points. Bari drop down to one point and will also be forced to pay a £1,360 fine.

“We take this decision into account and will consider our next move,” noted director of sport Fausto Pari. “There is real regret here, because the actions of one idiot have cost us dearly.”

This is the second incident in the space of a week that has seen objects thrown from the stands, as Roma’s Champions’ League match with Dynamo Kiev was abandoned when referee Anders Frisk was struck on the head by a coin.

Maradona shirt returns

Napoli may be forced to bring Diego Armando Maradona’s legendary No 10 shirt out of retirement.

The Azzurri withdrew the number in 2000 out of respect to the Argentine, who led the club to two League titles.

However, it is set to return this season after the San Paolo outfit were demoted to Serie C1 following their financial collapse.

Serie C rules insist that clubs in their Division must field their sides with shirts that run from 1 to 11.

"It would be a shame to see that number used again," said Franco Baresi, whose Milan No 6 jersey was retired in 1997.

"Maradona is an important part of Napoli’s history but also Italian football. I hope that the relevant authorities can make an exception."

Six goals in Napoli Serie C1 debut

The new Napoli played its first Serie C1 match this afternoon in front of 60,000 fans at the Stadio San Paolo.

The club, created by movie mogul Aurelio De Laurentiis following the bankruptcy of Napoli Calcio, started its League campaign with a 3-3 draw against Cittadella.

Giampiero Ventura’s men went behind to Carteri’s opener after just four minutes, but turned it all around with Ignoffo, Savino and a D’Aniello own goal.

However, their lack of fitness levels – as the team has been together for less than a month – showed all too clearly in the second half. Cittadella fought back and earned the point with Giacobbo’s free kick and a De Gasperini finish.

The future is nonetheless looking bright for Napoli, who have already sold 15,000 season tickets for Serie C1, almost as many as Juventus in the top flight.

Verona 5-3 Arezzo


Verona grabbed their first points of the new season after a frantic 5-3 victory against Arezzo. The away side led the game at one stage only to see the Bentegodi boys hit back. It had looked as if the points would be shared until Adailton made it 4-3 in the last minute. Bogdani then added another one in the fifth minute of added time.
