NATO AB Geilenkirchen, Germany – NATO E-3A AWACS aircraft have been charged with protecting the airspace over Portugal for the Euro 2004 football championship, June 12- July 4.

The surveillance flights will be flown from Portugal in order to prevent noise increases to communities surrounding the AWACS home base in Germany.

Having been officially requested by Portugal, the AWACS will provide the ultimate enhancement in airspace security and surveillance. By patrolling the skies over Portugal, the protection of the civilian population and football spectators of the championship are better guaranteed.

The NATO’s E-3A Component is its only permanent flying unit with multinational aircrews from 12 different nations. It forms a critical tool for the fulfilment of NATO’s military and political objectives, providing immediately available early warning and battle management support to the entire range of NATO operations.

grappig om te weten. Het verbaast me dat er geen patriot eenheden nzijn neergezet bij de stadions eik.. maar ze zullen wel een QRA team paraat hebben om vijandelijke vliegtuigen te onderscheppen.

nee, ze zijn gestationeerd in Geilenkirchen, maar dat is geen Duitse basis, maar een NAVO basis. Het zijn ook NAVO vliegtuigen, de bemanning bestaat ook uit Nederlands personeel, dus het zal wel goed zitten denk ik..
