BBC.site: Robbie Keane scored his 20th goal for the Republic of Ireland Holland will go to Euro 2004 on the back of a 1-0 defeat after Robbie Keane struck a superb winner for the Republic of Ireland in Amsterdam. The Tottenham striker beat Edwin van der Sar just before half-time and it proved enough for an Irish victory. It was Keane's 20th international goal and he is now just one short of Niall Quinn's Republic record. It was far from ideal preparation for Holland whose first game in Euro 2004 is against Germany on 15 June. Keane's strike came just as the first half was entering stoppage-time. The Dutch defence stood off as he cut inside from the left and unleashed a fierce drive from 20 yards. To make matters worse for Dutch boss Dick Advocaat, AC Milan star Clarence Seedorf went off with a hamstring injury just 15 minutes after coming on as an interval substitute. The game had been billed as a revenge match for the Dutch as it was Ireland who had prevented them from going to the last World Cup. However, Holland had to play second fiddle to Ireland's controlled passing game in the opening stages. The home side, with Patrick Kluivert and Ruud van Nistelrooy paired up front, failed to create many good chances in the first half. Newcastle keeper Shay Given, though, marked his 60th cap by making a fine low save to keep out a header from Roy Makaay in the second period. That would have salvaged a draw for Advocaat's side but instead they head to Portugal and a tough Group D with the jeers and whistles of the Amsterdam fans ringing in their ears. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

De meeste buitenlandse pers lult er ook maar wat op los...... The Dutch public is fed up with its team, and particularly with the black players. There may be a tinge of racism here: after all, in 2002 a quarter of the population voted for Pim Fortuyn’s anti-immigrant party. Dutch must show they give a damn Kluivert is a different matter. In theory, he and Ruud van Nistelrooy - both born on July 1, 1976 - should be the perfect forward partnership. In practice, they have never played well together. Van Nistelrooy is understood to have approached Advocaat at some point in the past year to tell him that Kluivert is wasting his talent, and that Advocaat gives him too many privileges. Advocaat himself has admitted to several players that he was wrong to let Kluivert come on as sub during Holland’s 6-0 drubbing of Scotland in November. Four nights before, after Holland’s miserable loss in Glasgow, Kluivert had broken the rules by staying out late. Advocaat believes he should have punished Kluivert. Kluivert’s night out was not an isolated episode. Early one morning at Minsk airport a year ago, after a lucky win over Belarus, Kluivert drank beer in front of the entire Dutch sports press. That trip, Fernando Ricksen broke his hotel-room door while drunk, and after Advocaat suspended him, Ricksen announced that six or seven players had been drunk. This particular divide within the squad is not black v white. The society of drinkers does not include Davids ("my body is a temple"). It does feature several of the other older players, both black and white, who have been in the squad forever, are multi-millionaires, regard international matches as a chance to catch up with their old mates over beer, and are a bit bored with the whole thing. A sullenness has crept into the Dutch squad. It can be traced to the night of June 29, 2000, when Holland lost on penalties to Italy in the semi-final of the European Championship. They had also missed two penalties during the match. Marco van Basten, a great Dutchman of the 1980s, says he would drop several established players. "They’ll have to travel as sportsmen. A number of them behave like film stars. You have to put an end to that."
