Tally Ho! Posted by J. Torres @ 20:56:28 - Category: General Hello, comic fans. CBI host J. Torres here. But tonight I am your "Tally Ho" with an update...
Approximately 12 hours since the deadline for submissions has passed and 4 of the judges on the selection committee have submitted their nominees.
Right now, I have the names of 17 artists who have close to a 60% chance of being invited into this competition.
(But those odds could change drastically once our fifth judge submits his nominees!)
I'd love to tell you guys who's in the running. But I can't. Okay, I can. But I won't. I will, however, throw some more numbers at you:
From what I can recall, 3 of these artists also submitted a link in last year's Open Call.
And 1 of them even made it to the nominations stage but, alas, not the top 10.
Want more clues?
I count 13 from the US. 2 from Canada. And 1 each from Spain, South Africa, and Australia.
Oh, and to my peeps in the OYM forum... 1 of our "regulars" looks like he's got a shot at this.
So, tally up all those numbers, go check out all those links again, and see if you can figure out who is so near but yet so far.
I'll hopefully be back here tomorrow with some comments from our judges in the selection committee. Take care till then. And remember to have fun!

Tick, Tick, Tick... Posted by J. Torres @ 09:40:11 - Category: General Hello, comic fans. J. Torres here. We're less than 24 hours away from the submissions deadlines. So far, we've received over 160 entries. The thread has over 10,000 views. And this contest is just beginning. I've gone through every single post and already have my favourties bookmarked to see how they fare in the end. I hope you're enjoying discovering all these new talents and checking out all that eye candy as much as I am.
There's certainly a lot of action going on behind the scenes, too. Our selection committee has been busy viewing everyone's samples, bookmarking their favourites, making notes, giving some people a second or third or even fourth look, directing one another towards certain links, even warning each other to steer clear of others, and debating the merits of one artist or style over another for this competition.
At this point in the contest, I'd like to give a shout out to my co-moderators on the CBI forum, Augie de Blieck, Brandon Hanvey, and of course Jonah Weiland for helping manage the submissions thread and validating all those posts. It's not as easy as it may sound and these guys are working round the clock, folks!
That said, if you're planning to enter, make sure not to wait till the last minute. Again, the Open Call thread will close at noon (E.S.T.) tomorrow, Monday, May 31st. Please post as early as possible. If your post gets rejected at the eleventh hour and you don't have time to make whatever corrections and resubmit... sorry. Once the thread is closed, it's closed.
Good luck, everyone!

Thursday's Comic Book Idol Action
Posted by Jonah Weiland @ 00:52:00 - Category: General
First off, are you looking for information on how to enter the contest? Well, then click here.
Wow, Thursday was a busy day! If you've been following the action in the Open Call thread on the Comic Book Idol Forum, you already know that. Over 90 artists submitted their work for consideration on Thursday and there are many more to come. There are some really amazing submissions so far. Take some time out this weekend and check out the entries. As for you artist types, you all have until Monday at Noon Eastern Time to get your entries in. Don't wait 'til the last minute!
To those of you out there who know an artist that should enter this contest, drop them an e-mail and say, "Hey, you should try to be the next Comic Book Idol!" Of course, you should probably tell them a little bit more than just that, like maybe a URL or something, otherwise they'll have no clue what you're talking about!
Okay, getting back to the topic at hand, Thursday had some other interesting developments. One of our panel of judges on the selection committee, the five artists from last year's Comic Book Idol competition, has had to drop out and an alternate put in his place. L. Frank Weber, who made it through to round three last year is bowing out. It seems his schedule just got a lot busier, due in part to work he got thanks to being seen in Comic Book Idol, and just won't have the time to devote to choosing our ten contestants. He's promised to watch the contest with interest, though, so he'll be around.
Taking Frank's place will be Michael Flores, who made it to round four last year. It turns out that Micahel's wife had a baby last week, so he'll be up all night anyway. Rounding out our selection committee is Comic Book Idol 1 winner Patrick Scherberger, Martin Redmond, Chris Ring and Jonathan Hickman. Good luck, guys, the choice is not going to be easy.
That's it for this update. We'll probably have an update or two for you this weekend as more entries come in.

Wolverine artist Darick Robertson has hinted that he may be doing the artwork for a new ongoing Nightcrawler series from Marvel Comics on his official Web site, DarickR.com.
Having previously revealed that he would be working on an X-book (see 'COMIX-FAN NEWS BRIEFS - APRIL 22, 2004'), today Robertson teased with more.
"I was offered a new ongoing book at Marvel today that has me tap dancing. I will be doing a new ongoing book with an X-character going solo. I can't say who it is yet, but it's a book I am as excited to be working on as I was Wolverine. This character has never had a solo ongoing before and it's a great opportunity to make it great."
"I will be finishing Wolverine at the same time I am starting up on this, going into it right as I finish off my oversized issue of the Hulk. I am happy, happy, happy to be letting go of Wolverine for this project."
When another poster asked, "Hmmm... should we be investing in catnip?", alluding to the title possibly being a Beast series, Robertson replied, "I can't say, but your logic is fuzzy."
Robertson also revealed a writer has been chosen for the book, and the writer is one that he has not worked with before.
Robertson's comments seem to suggest that his new assignment is on an ongoing Nightcrawler series. Such a title has oft been rumoured of late, with outgoing Uncanny X-Men writer Chuck Austen - who Robertson has not worked with - attached.
Stay tuned to Comix-Fan for more on this situation as it comes to light.
