Bears once roamed freely across wild America. But now, Florida black bears are imperiled by rapidly dwindling habitat from suburban sprawl, and grizzly bears could someday vanish altogether from the Lower 48 states unless we act to save them. Even though Florida black bear populations are drastically declining, they are not protected under the Endangered Species Act. Grizzly bears receive some protections from the government, but Interior Secretary Gale Norton is stopping a citizen-run initiative to bring the species back to the remote Bitterroot Mountains of Idaho and Montana. Scientists say this important project -- already approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service after seven years of planning and public comment -- holds the key to the long-term survival of grizzlies in the Lower 48.

Dear Secretary Norton,
I urge you to work to save the bears of North America. Our remaining populations of Florida black bears are drastically declining, and they must be protected under the Endangered Species Act. You should also stop blocking the citizen-run plan to restore grizzly bears to the vast Bitterroot Mountains. That program is critical to help prevent the possible extirpation of that species from the Lower 48 states. I also urge you to increase efforts to restore viable populations of black bears in those states where populations are declining. We need to save the bears of North America for future generations.
