NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity captured this view from the base of "Burns Cliff" during the rover's 280th martian day (Nov. 6, 2004).
This cliff in the inner wall of "Endurance Crater" displays multiple layers of bedrock for the rover to examine with its panoramic camera and miniature thermal emission spectrometer. The rover team has decided that the farthest Opportunity can safely advance along the base of the cliff is close to the squarish white rock near the center of this image. After examining the site for a few days from that position, the the rover will turn around and head out of the crater. The view is a mosaic of frames taken by Opportunity's navigation camera. The rover was on ground with a slope of about 30 degrees when the pictures were taken, and the view is presented here in a way that corrects for that tilt of the camera.

Clouds over 'Endurance' on Sol 290
Clouds add drama to the sky above "Endurance Crater" in this mosaic of frames taken by the navigation camera on NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity at about 9:30 a.m. on the rover's 290th sol (Nov. 16, 2004). The view spans an arc from east on the left to the southwest on the right.
These clouds are part of a band that forms near the equator when Mars is near the part of its orbit that is farthest from the Sun. For Opportunity (and Spirit and the rest of the southern hemisphere), this occurs in late fall and early winter. During this period, atmospheric temperatures and the amount of water vapor combine to form large-scale clouds. These clouds look like Earth's cirrus clouds and share other similarities with cirrus clouds in that they are believed to be composed entirely of water-ice particles with sizes on the order of several micrometers (a few ten-thousandths of an inch).
The images that are combined to produce this view have been processed to remove geometrical distortion associated with the camera's 45-degree field of view. In addition, special image processing has been applied to enhance the clouds and make them visible across the entire mosaic. The rim of Endurance was processed using the same technique, illustrating how much enhancement was done. Glare from the Sun washed out the clouds on the left in the original images; this glare was removed.

The view combines frames taken by Opportunity's panoramic camera between the rover's 287th and 294th martian days (Nov. 13 to 20, 2004).
This is a composite of 46 different images, each acquired in seven different Pancam filters. It is an approximately true-color rendering generated from the panoramic camera's 750-nanometer, 530-nanometer and 430-nanometer filters. The mosaic spans more than 180 degrees side to side. Because of this wide-angle view, the cliff walls appear to bulge out toward the camera. In reality the walls form a gently curving, continuous surface.

The rover spent just over six months inside the stadium-sized crater, examining in detail the tallest stack of bedrock layers ever seen up close on a foreign planet.

Wellicht heeft het te maken met het gesignaleerde vocht in de lucht welke als ""rijp"" een dunne film achterlaat op de zonnenpanelen, welke overdag weer verdampt en zodoende het stof meeneemt en effectief verwijderd van de zonnepannelen?! Of zou er iets zijn veranderd aan de statische elektriciteit van opportunity waardoor eerst het stof makkelijk bleef "plakken" aan het wagentje en nu niet meer/ minder doordat opportunity deze statische lading kwijt is geraakt (geneutraliseerd ten opzichte van het stof...) tijdens de stormen?? kon??

The countries participating in the Preparatory European Space Exploration Programme "Aurora" have recently confirmed and increased their contributions.
This preparatory phase has attracted additional contributions for the period 2005-2006. Sweden has now joined the programme. The subscribed envelope has nearly tripled, from the original ¤14.3m to around ¤41.5m currently.
Italy has confirmed its interest and ambitions in space exploration by further increasing its participation. The United Kingdom will also contribute additional money. France, the third-largest contributor to the programme, is followed by Belgium, Spain and The Netherlands. Other participants are Austria, Switzerland and Portugal. Canada, a Cooperating State, also confirmed an increased contribution.
On 15 December, the ESA Council approved the Agency’s budgets for 2005, including the budget for "Aurora". These developments enable major industrial activities to continue and will enable the work on preparing the full programme proposal to move ahead in line with original plans.
Invitations to tender for industrial contracts will be issued starting next February. These include work for the ExoMars mission and the Mars Sample Return mission. Other activities will cover in-orbit assembly, rendez-vous and docking, habitation and life-support systems plus a broad range of technology development work. Industry will also be called upon to contribute to the definition of a European Space Exploration strategy and architecture.
The preparatory phase of the "Aurora" Exploration Programme will culminate in a full programme proposal, which will be submitted to the next ESA Council meeting at ministerial level, currently scheduled for end-2005.

Als ik zo de RAW Images bekijk is Opportunity wel heel erg schoon.
Je zou toch denken dat de statische lading alleen maar fijn stof weghoud
en dat de grotere/zwaardere stofdeeltjes blijven liggen.

ik las het verhaaltje net op nu.nl en op de een of andere manier moest ik er wel om lachen, zag gelijk groene mannetjes met een stofdoek in de weer enzo.
maar zou het niet gewoon door de stormen kunnen komen die daar de laatste tijd toch behoorlijk huishouden, hoe dan ook ben benieuwd naar de uiteindelijke verklaring.
