I'm guessing the lumbering, Johnny Howards policy on the treating of the aboriginals, and the expansion of the desert.
It's just an (un)educated guess however.

Not true. Stupid stories to scare people. Are there spiders in Australia ... yes. Do they eat people... NO! Yes some spiders are deadly... "red backs" etc, but they don't wait at the front door, ringing the door bell, ready to attack.

So you're a descendant of a former British criminal, who was sent to Australia as an exile? Or do you have Dutch blood flowing through your veins, which explains your ability to understand our beautiful language? Isn't it a bit bold and cocky to think that Dutch people do not have the capability of speaking/writing the English language flawlessly? Because I know numerous people who do have this ability - let it be genetically inherited, or acquired by a great deal of studying - and execute this in everyday life. I still do not see what it is exactly that you're trying to reach here, but I cannot imagine that your goal is to stir up an entire forum against you. So just clearly state your aims, and let the (Dutch) people try to answer to your exclamations...

Actually German hertiage, but more correctly the Rhine, both sides. Though it is a mistake to consider me German as I am an Australian and as I am not an aborigine, I came from some other country.

My aims? To have a cup of coffee.

I'm guessing the lumbering, Johnny Howards policy on the treating of the aboriginals, and the expansion of the desert.
It's just an (un)educated guess however.

The aborigines receive many millions of dollars every year that all other Australians do not. They manage *mismanage* a lot or so it is claimed. They need lower scores to get into university and have other affirmative action policies that support them. It isn't a lack of resouces but a lack of using correctly what they have.

That may be so, I haven't heard of that, what I have heard is that aboriginals still get discriminated against very often.
But let's not turn this into a political debate about the rights and wrongs of a government.

As kind of requested and as promised, here is a webcam shot outside the window closest to my computer.

www.chrisjohn316.com/chris_1451_uur_wallpaper_31_jan_2004.jpg

That is 1024x768 so it is good if you want it as a wallpaper, 115KB. Also the quality is rather poor. I have a Logitech Pro webcam, so if you have any suggestions as to how I can improve the image quality let me know.

I am happy to take some webcam images of outside my windows if that is of any interest. Exactly what I see here.

About 7kms north of the CBD, (Central Business District), or the very middle of the city... and about 30kms directly south of Whittlesea where the UFO was photographed.

Whittlesea is what we sometimes call "the sticks", meaning it is basically empty.

Melbourne is about 50kms wide and 150kms long... that is the CBD and suburbs. I live walking distance from a supermarket, train station, trams, and bus. I live directly opposite a park.

Rather nice.

The colors don't show too well in the webcan photo. It's all very green.

Cheers.

I visited Sydney but found it dirty, the streets were in a non grid layout *very difficult to get from place to place* and there were beggars.

Sydney has an Australian feel whereas Melbourne has a European feel. You need to have a lot of money to live well in Sydney, but not so here in Melbourne.

Good idea about the news topic, but I'll wait for any questions or comments made my way... don't want to bore people.

What did you see besides Sydney? You can see that in an hour! "Look the Opera house, a lot smaller than it looks on TV and look there... a bridge, the Sydney habor bridge. It is over water. End of tour... move along people nothing to see here!"

Talk about boring!

You want to really see Australia do what we do. I have been off road driving through the Karri and Jarrah forests of south west, Western Australia. Now THAT is seeing Australia. Anyone who has heard of this, remember the 1960s series "Land of the Giants"? Well the Karri and Jarrah forests and ferns are gigantic!

Ferns bigger than your car. Trees among the tallest in the world. A whole forest to explore off road. Camping not too far away and that is just in one spot... Margaret River is not far way... which all you surfies out there would have heard about.

So Sydney... look outside your window, that is close enough and now make a real tourist plan LOL

So what is my plan? I want to live in Tasmania, further south. There are mountain and snow and places to xplore on foot. A real adventure!

I grew up with the beach, sun, surf, blue skys. I have had enough of that and surfing. Exploration is best.

Oh and whoever is planning on a holiday... make sure you go as a group. Always more fun and safer, especially when you go exploring.

Lastly understand that anything in northern Australia is deadly. Crocodiles. Tourists are constantly standing near a flat small river of lake and WHAM a crocodile drags them in the water. Crocodiles are up to about 4 or 5 meters long. You have NO chance.

Crocodiles also hunt people over a short distance of about 300 meters. NEVER go near water in northern Australia unless you see locak Australian's do it.

NEVER EVER swim in water in northern Australia unless it is a beach with a lot of people.

Funny how the tourism brochure doesn't tell you that in red bloody fonts

Do a google search for like "Australia and crocodile and tourist". I haven't but you may be surprised at how common it is.

Remember you a tourist here not an Aussie and so do what Aussies do as we know how to survive here

I visited Sydney but found it dirty, the streets were in a non grid layout *very difficult to get from place to place* and there were beggars.

Grid layouts are so boring, no excitement.

Sydney has an Australian feel whereas Melbourne has a European feel. You need to have a lot of money to live well in Sydney, but not so here in Melbourne.
My father lived there, I don't know when he moved from Perth to Sydney but he stayed there a good few years, that's why I picked Sydney.

Darling harbour, opera house, those were the major attractions in Sydney itself, pretty boring city, but the suburb (marrickville) my father lived was rather nice.

I went up to Newcastle, to the bush, stayed there on the land of a friend of his.
That was an adventure in itself, the time it took us to get there was enough to cross the border from west to east here.

Yaa, I missed something, why do you think I want to go back there and drive around for myself, public transport sucks nuts.

Exploration rules, too bad there's nothing left to explore anymore
It's the same reason I wish to emigrate to Asia, atleast I haven't seen everything there.

Group of friends would be best, organised tours are boring as hell.

Saltwater crocs are even worse or so I've heard, and they outrun you too.

Northern Australia is kind of a backward region as far as I'm told, not much tourism there, most of it goes to the Sydney/Melbourne area, or it seems that way at least.

Stay out of the heat, don't swim with crocs, and check out the bush.

It was overcast a lot today and we had some light showers.

Two days ago we were hit by a bad but localised storm. Flooding like just two kilometers from me but only rain where I am.

Melbourne has some dangerous weather.

A few weeks ago the storms were so bad, the hail and rain and wind I was ready need the door at like 01:00 to flee for my life if my home collapsed. Thankfully it didn't.

I have never seen such a storm before. It was frightful.

It's quiet now, weather wise... 23:14.

And we bitch about our weather.
Is this normal?
You might have wanted to stay indoors too, if your house can collapse, you can only take a few hits.

Let's see some more of your digi pictures

No it isn't normal. So far this year we have had two "storms of the century", meaning on two occasions the worst storms on record.

The one where I thought my life was really in danger was an electrical storm. So bright you could basically read a book and hail no stop.

For the most part the weather isn't that bad though.

Thanks for your comments Piro...

I don't know if FOK can handle comments about Dutch Nazi Collaborators and that type of attitude being the reason so many Dutch are against George and Tony.

See things like that can be offensive and so I have been very good so far and not taken a stick to Dutch attitudes, but if I can, without my thread being locked I will.

Just read my replies to what you posted... you know where.

The other place has a great spectrum for diverse views but it can be a bit much to some.

Anyway, let me try this here, seeing you invited me...

I support George and Tony. I think the general Dutch attitude is anti George and anti Tony. I view such an attitude as having been anti Churchill some 60 years ago.

The Dutch of the 1940s after the Nazi invasion and occupation learned to be a tougher lot. Today's Dutch are largely morally weak and do not have a firm grasp of what is right and wrong and those that do, many are too pathetic to act on it.

Let me add the French to that, but what is new, and even the once strong Germans. No wonder the French and Germans are so close... they are both morally weak.

George and Tony are like the allied leaders of WWII.

Holland, France and Germany are like puppet states of all that is wrong in this world.

France will become an Islamic state before too long.

Go buy a Koran, fire up the gas chambers and be ready to do your job... that is where WEAK Europe is heading.

Anyone who thinks like this is regarded as being in the minority in Europe, but some 60 years ago we were the majority.

So the WMDs were not found. I for one couldn't care less. I am happy that Iraqis are now liberated.
...

well Piro I hope the above is enough for the Dutchies here to get out their steak knives and forks and dig in

Stubby holder? Download the wallpaper version... see that large flat brownish wooden looking thing, we call that a table, and it doubles as a stubby holder. In fact it is so good it can hold a 6-pack, a slab (24 pack) and more... neat hey

Easy on the sarcasm mate, I just tought they were pretty common over there (at least they were with the aussies I've met).

What's with that attitude anyway ?? Trying to take the stigma away that people have here about ozzies being laid back and carefree ?

Good luck, coz that's very unlikely to happen.

In Australia my reply would have been understood as humor. It would *hopefully* have received a laugh or two... after all the idea of a table as a stubbie holder is funny, at least here. It was not sarcasm in any way, manner, or form.

I hope this clarifies matters.

Cheers.

Dear Australian,

It is lovely to see a bit of Australian sunshine on this forum, so keep it up!

It reminds me of these good old Ozzie days...
- watching the cricket with my mates while having a barbie (well I even know the bonus point rule - not bad for a sheila hey!)
- Reading the Age on a saturday while enjoying a lattee in a cafe at the South Melbourne markets...
- Seeing David and Margrets advice on what to watch in the weekend...
- Camping in the bush and enjoying a fine damper...
- Putting on my best frock for the Melbourne Cup...
- Discussing Pavlova, Russel Crowe and Pharlap with a Kiwi (I think they can have Russell)....

Aussie aussie aussie oi oi oi!

No offense but "Aussie", not "Ozzie". It is "Dutch" not "Deutsch" right

Bonus rule due to achieving victory by a substantial amount? Only one day cricket is interesting, the rest is a bore. The word "sheila" is not really used other than as a joke and by persons out of step with norms.

Doesn't Margaret have an opinion about everything! If she says it is bad, or good, doesn't matter. I trust David's view a bit more. Still who needs to be told what movies to like.

As for camping in the bush and damper, show me the nearest supermarket and pass me the bread, butter and vegemite!

I have never seen a horse race, other than by accident trying to avoid it while changing channels.

The Australia I know is fast changing weather. A lot of greenery. Also ... Trams. Stupid politicians. An idiot named Steve Irwin... I go for the crocodiles! Kylie ... I wish they would keep her in the UK!

Footy is good, AFL. Go Collingwood. High tech computer gear is good.

Meeting people who think we have 30cm wide spiders everywhere and kangaroos hoping about while we are in fact like any modern city here is a bit sad.

PS most spiders are like 1 to 2 cm, the largest I have see is like maybe 10cms and they are called Wolf Spiders. About ten years ago I emptied a can of air freshener on one ... the only thing I had at hand... they are FAST and can JUMP. Thankfully most spiders are "daddy long legs". Easy enough to collect with an object, plop in the toilet and flush.

Also for all the science buffs, seeing as the Earth's magnetic polarity is perhaps shifting, Australia will on top of the world and Europe will be at the A-hem end

What I wish Australia would have are pine trees. We have them but not like northern Europe and the USA.

You cannot take your Dutch bicycle to ride here without a jet engine strapped onto it unless you want to be in training for the Tour de France every day.

Good thing about Melbourne are fewer flies and mossies than Perth.

Also the native birds make noise rather than sing... if it were up to me I would Europeanise Australia with the nicest plants and animals. Australia is a bit to rugged in that regard.

Have you ever tried a VB and vegemite sandwich? Try it and see what it is like. There may be a place in Holland to try it. Very Australian!

Latest cricket score...

India batting, 6/94 after 27.

6 = number of players out... 10 = lose completely
94 = runs (300 at 50 is good, at 27 150 is good)
27 = overs (maximum 50 and then they swap, the Aussies bat)

The above score means India are losing VERY badly.

They have lost over half their players, all of their best batsmen, as they go in first. Also their score is far too low. They will not even make 200 at this rate, and 300 is good.

If you can find a live net coverage somewhere post it here.

There is another 5+ hours of play left

*cracks open another VB and kicks back*

We had the final of the One Day International Cricket champonship yesterday. Australia and India were in the finals. Australia won the first game, best out of three final.

Last night was the second, and Australia set a score of 359, which is HUGE. A good score is around 250. A great score is around 300. Anyway India went in chasing this huge score and only managed to get 151. The Australian score was more than twice as much. That is a massive victory.

For those that do not know cricket think of a soccer *football* score where one team gets 7 goals and the other team gets 1 goal. It is that type of a huge victory.

The India are GOOD cricket players. Just Australia have been world champions for over ten years now.

As with all games there is more enjoyment in a close match, but a victory is a victory and the Aussie win yet another cricket match.
