Dit album bevat maar 1 (ja, je leest het goed) nummer met de lengte van ruim 70 minuten. Muzikaal lijkt het meer op de soundtrack voor films als The Lord Of The Rings en Sleepy Hollow. Het is niet raar, gezien zijn vorige album een collectie van coverversies van verschillende filmsoundtracks is. Om dit album te kunnen beluisteren en begrijpen, moet je dus je ogen dichtdoen en je fantasie loslaten. Dit is naar mijn mening de enige manier. Als je iemand bent die van melodie houdt, kun je deze cd beter mijden.

When we first picked up 'DELIRIVM CORDIA' by Fantomas we had a feeling it was going be an absolute bugger to review. First up its one track. Called 'DELIRIVM CORDIA'. Or Mr Bungle vs the sound department of the BBC.Mike Patton has steered clear of convention since his days with Faith No More, terrorising, sabotaging and holding music to ransom, and this Fantomas outing is the most sonically challenging and downright bizarre thing hes done to date. From a man who enjoys pouring out people's piss on his own head, and shitting in hairdryers in hotels so guests who book into the same room will get hot faeces in their barnets. The big, funny bastard.
On initially finding out this isnt a conformist rock record, fans may feel a little short changed, but this is actually a hugely entertaining and refreshing album once you get past the concept, or lack of one. Its not the sort of thing youd put in your stereo when getting ready for a night out, but wed definitely advise you to put it through your headphones when strolling down a deserted lane late at night.
'DELIRIVM CORDIA' is hardly the kind of record that will be everyones bag, but there is so much variety and so much imagination packed into it that we find ourselves recommending it despite ourselves. Its twisted, clever, funny, and like nothing youve ever heard. Mike Patton is a genius and that is something you should never forget, despite the fact he may have inadvertently invented nu-metal. Perhaps this is his way of saying sorry.

His latest release is a one-track 55-minute piece that gets one side of your mind picturing a nightmarish plot of its own concoction, while the other side questions What the hell was that guy thinking?
What does Delirium Cordia mean and how does it serve as the albums theme?
Its a Latin archaic term for an irregular heartbeat. It fits the music. It fits the artwork. After I had written some of the piece, I came across a photo book by Max Helwig titled The Sacred Heart. This guy went into an operating room to take some really revealing photos. It affected him so much that he eventually became a doctor. You can see why in the photos. Theyre extremely graphic and striking. Some of the music was inspired by these photos. I wanted it to feel like a long drawn out procedure and thats what its like when youre on an operating table. The music moves the way it would if you were to move in the human body. It crawls.
What makes Fantomas work? How much of the writing is just you as opposed to a group collaboration?
Its a very amicable dictatorship [that] makes it very functional. Thats the way it started and at least for the time being thats the way its going to stay. Sometimes when you start a band you never know how its going to go. Its like a chemical experiment. This is one of the only bands Ive been in thats been cool sailing. The music Ive written is complicated and difficult and has too much info in it already. It doesnt need anymore.
Can you describe your writing process?
I didnt want it to sound like a four-piece rock band. I wanted it to sound like an ensemble. Most of it I did at home with a sampler, a lot of shitty mics and a lot of shitty instruments. We kind of just overdubbed on top of it.
How did you form Fantomas?
I just made a few calls. Ive known all these guys for a while. I had all this music that was written sitting on my shelf. I decided to put a band together and play it. It took me a while to figure out who those people would be. You dont wanna send a tape like that out to anyone, its personal stuff. I sent a tape out to those guys [King Buzzo of the Melvins, Dave Lombardo of Slayer, Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle] and luckily enough they joined me. The truth is I couldnt get Neil Peart, Les Claypool and Steve Vai.
How do you keep the adrenaline going when you open for yourselves?

When can we expect a tour and with whom?
April/May of next year. Were talking to Squarepusher and Melt Banana.
I was listening to Delirium Cordia and my 2-year-old niece ran to me and started crying. Any thoughts on creating music that makes babies weep?
Youre the one that was playing it for her. What are you, a masochist? A sadist? Actually, Delirium Cordia is the first of two Fantomas recordings. The second will be released in the first half of 2004. Its a cartoon-based record with a lot of nursery rhymes, cartoon sound effects, and choppy arrangements. Its a nice fun record, so if you want to be a good aunt, play her that.

Patton had previously described the 55-minute "Delirium Cordia" (which contains only one track) as "my version of ambient music. It's dealing with larger blocks of sound and putting them together. Mood music, I like to call it. Obviously we still get around to making a lot of jarring sounds there's a lot of nasty stuff on there but it's not like the band is attacking you with a chainsaw. It's more seductive."
With regards to the recording process for the album, Patton said, "I would pick out a particular section that had a certain character to it, say, a long rhythmic repetitive drum part with some whooping cough vocals over the top of that and synth drums. We'd divvy it up and chop it up, the way we usually do, into seventy or eighty little pieces. It's much more sample-based. I didn't want this to sound like a band recording."
