In 2009 een rover ter grootte van een bestelbus op Mars
De Pathfinder in die in 1997 op Mars landde is even groot als een schoenendoos, Spirit en Opportunity zijn even groot als een golfwagentje, maar de toekomstige Marsrover is qua afmetingen gelijk aan een bestelbus!
De nieuwe Marsrover zal het Mars Scientific Laboratory gaan heten, aangezien het een heleboel faciliteiten bevat. De rover zal waarschijnlijk in 2009 gelanceerd worden. Het wordt voortgedreven op nucleaire kracht (en niet door zonne-energie) en zal vanaf de aarde bestuurd worden. Een voordeel van nucleaire energie is dat de rover langer kan lopen. Panelen die zonnestraling omzetten in zonne-energie komen na verloop van de maanden onder stof te zitten. De verwachte levensduur van de MER's is 90 dagen.
De toekomstige Marsrover zal op zoek gaan naar leven. Hieronder een plaatje.

This true color image taken by the panoramic camera onboard the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit shows "Adirondack," the rover's first target rock. Spirit traversed the sandy martian terrain at Gusev Crater to arrive in front of the football-sized rock on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, just three days after it successfully rolled off the lander. The rock was selected as Spirit's first target because its dust-free, flat surface is ideally suited for grinding. Clean surfaces also are better for examining a rock's top coating. Scientists named the angular rock after the Adirondack mountain range in New York. The word Adirondack is Native American and is interpreted by some to mean "They of the great rocks."
ESA PR 05-2004. ESA's Mars Express, successfully inserted into orbit around Mars on 25 December 2003, is about to reach its final operating orbit above the poles of the Red Planet. The scientific investigation has just started and the first results already look very promising, as this first close-up image shows.
Although the seven scientific instruments on board Mars Express are still undergoing a thorough calibration phase, they have already started collecting amazing results. The first high-resolution images and spectra of Mars have already been acquired.
This first spectacular stereoscopic colour picture was taken on 14 January 2004 by ESAs Mars Express satellite from 275 km above the surface of Mars by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). This image is available on the ESA Portal at: http://mars.esa.int
The picture shows a portion of a 1700 km long and 65 km wide swath which was taken in south-north direction across the Grand Canyon of Mars (Valles Marineris). It is the first image of this size that shows the surface of Mars in high resolution (12 metres per pixel), in colour, and in 3D. The total area of the image on the Martian surface (top left corner) corresponds to 120 000 km². The lower part of the picture shows the same region in perspective view as if seen from a low-flying aircraft. This perspective view was generated on a computer from the original image data. One looks at a landscape which has been predominantly shaped by the erosional action of water. Millions of cubic kilometres of rock have been removed, and the surface features seen now such as mountain ranges, valleys, and mesas, have been formed.
The HRSC is just one of the instruments to have collected exciting data. To learn more about the very promising beginning to ESA's scientific exploration of Mars, media representatives are invited to attend a press conference on Friday, 23 January 2004, at 11:00 CET at ESAs Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, and in video-conference with the other ESA centres.
There, under the auspices of ESA Council Chair, Germany's Minister for Education and Research, Mrs Edelgard Bulmahn, ESA's Director of the Scientific Programme, Prof. David Southwood and the Principal Investigators of all instruments on board Mars Express will present the first data and preliminary results.

The next phase will be to initiate a period of radio silence where no communication attempts will be made with Beagle 2 until the 22nd January. Adopting this approach will force Beagle 2 into communication search mode 2 [CSM2] where the probe will automatically transmit a signal throughout the Martian day [power is still conserved during the night].

Spirit's twin Mars Exploration Rover, Opportunity, will reach Mars on Jan. 25 (EST and Universal Time; 9:05 p.m., Jan. 24, PST) to begin a similar examination of a site on the opposite side of the planet from Gusev Crater.

Er is weer een nieuw plaatje gemaakt door de Spirit rover. Deze rover landde 4 januari op het oppervlak van de rode planeet en dit weekend zal er weer een rover afdalen en landen. Aankomende zondagochtend zal de Opportunity rover landen op het oppervlak, maar daarover zaterdag een uitgebreid nieuwsbericht.
Het plaatje is een mozaïek gemaakt door de panorama camera aan boord van de Spirit rover. Het toont de landingsplaats in de Gusev krater, die sinds de landing 'Columbia Memorial Station' wordt genoemd ter aandenken van de overleden crewleden. Het plaatje is zo bijzonder, omdat het de volledige reis van de rover laat zien.
De rover zal de komende dagen flink reizen (op sonde-niveau) Ten eerste reist hij 250 meter naar het noord-oosten naar een grote krater met een diameter van 200 meter. Deze krater kun je zien op het plaatje als een richel aan de linkerkant. Aan de rechterkant zijn de heuvels te zien van het grote gebergte drie kilometer verderop in het oosten.
Een gedeelte van de zonnepanelen is op de voorgrond zichtbaar. Data van de panorama camera's groene, blauwe en infrarode filters werden gecombineerd om dit plaatje te creëeren in ware kleuren.
