JUDAS PRIEST Guitarist Discusses Early Rivalry With IRON MAIDEN - Sep. 27, 2003
In a recent interview with Germany's Rock Hard magazine, JUDAS PRIEST guitarist K.K. Downing addressed former IRON MAIDEN singer Paul Di'Anno's claim in his autobiography that he was the main reason for the old feelings of rivalry that existed between MAIDEN and PRIEST during the early '80s."Paul apologized personally to me what a great gesture," Downing said. "But he wasn't the main reason for the rivalry. At the time of 'British Steel', PRIEST was the bigger band and MAIDEN was the supporting act. They were saying that they [would] blow us off the stage without any problem well, I thought their behavior wasn't very nice. I'd have loved to send them home to take another band with us, [one] who would have appreciated the chance. But we were told not to do it as it would have looked like we were frightened by them. So we kept on going...but they were very arrogant. And I remember the main rehearsal before the tour when there were a few guys hanging around in the room who didn't say a word and watched everything we did every step we made and every move of the stage lights. I wasn't very pleased and asked the guitar tech to tell the guys to leave the place. Don't get me wrong: I'm not too good not to play in front of the supporting band but they could have asked, at least, if it was OK to attend the rehearsal. We went on tour and they didn't blow us off the stage, of course. Hahahah. I watched quite a lot of the MAIDEN shows, but the reaction of the audience wasn't very explosive because the fans were waiting for us. OK, MAIDEN became one of the biggest bands of the metal scene and I'm proud of them. We made a big mistake by focusing more on the U.S. than on Europe after releasing 'British Steel'. [I mean], we lost a lot of attention at home. In the U.S., we were quite big and MAIDEN asked us for a support slot on our U.S. tour. We said yes and the same old story happened again. It had a lot to do with rivalry and jealousy."
When asked what he would say to MAIDEN mainman Steve Harris if they bumped into each other, K.K. said, "I'd buy him a beer because it's an old story. Like I already said, I'm proud of what MAIDEN achieved and of what they did for the British metal. It might sound stupid but it's true."
Maar ach, ik zou zeggen dat je dat automatisch krijgt als je al een decennium of twee 's wereld beste band bent.

02/10/2003 The Iron Maiden Xmas Card Competition
Aaaaaah it's that time again. Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat... hang on, it's only October! Ahem.Right. As many of you will know, the last few years we've thrown the design of the official Iron Maiden xmas card open to you guys. This is the card that gets sent to FC members, to friends of the band... and to the last minute people we realise we've forgotten
Each year, the standard has been amazingly high and we've had a real challenge agreeing on a winner.
So, we'd like you guys to do it again. Send us your designs - conforming to the specs below - and the winner will be picked by Rod, be printed and sent to loads of people. The winner will get a credit on the card, a toasty Iron Maiden tour jacket and a vinyl test pressing of Dance Of Death, signed by the whole band! Runners up that we really like will also get some goodies.
Your design needs to be A5 size (about 21 by 15 cm) - it's up to you which way round it goes (portrait or landscape). The picture is entirely up to you.
Now here's the important stuff - as the design will be printed, you need to make sure you have a high-resolution image that you can send us if we choose your card. If you're hand painting or drawing, no problem, but if you're creating your design from scratch in Photoshop or whatever, please make sure you do it at 600dpi and not at the lower resolution you'd use for things that are going to be displayed only on a monitor. Keep the original in a very safe place, and send us a copy.
HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR DESIGN
**************************
Please send in your submissions as lower-resolution JPEG or GIF images - we don't need you to send the huge hi-res file until we choose the winner. Please make sure that you name your file with your own name - eg. jimsmith.jpg - cos otherwise we get 200 'maiden.jpg'!
Email you entries to us here and please make sure you include your contact details.
Closing date for entries is 31st October. Good luck!
