Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles In-Depth
Gameplay breakdown, GBA link-up, full intro, high-res movies, screens, and more!
A world called Fungi Forest has an almost perfect mucus-sheen to its floor, which constantly changes thanks to an awesome specularity effect. The rendering on bosses is also jaw-droppingly good.
A really good example of the melding of art and technology is this brilliant force field effect (seen above) that occurs when you pass into new parts of the Overworld. It's a combination of gorgeous smoke effects, wind, refraction, and a cracking electric dome that protects you. It's moments like these that really show off the GameCube hardware for what it's capable of.
I could go on and on about the visuals, of course, but I won't. You can see all the prettiness for yourself by checking out the following movies. And when you're done, just click on through to our media section and check out more screenshots, which I've captured exclusively for Insiders.

Fantastic Visuals
Crystal Chronicles has always impressed me in screenshot form, and the little I saw at E3 please me as well, but now that I've sat face to face with the final product I must say I'm extremely awed with some of Square Enix's accomplishments. The company is clearly home to some of the best artists in the industry and that continues to show with Crystal Chronicles. Whether you like the "little people" style or not, there's no denying that the world designs and the enemies, especially the bosses, are extremely eye-catching. Particularly, the texture design and the implementation of it is fantastic.A world called Fungi Forest has an almost perfect mucus-sheen to its floor, which constantly changes thanks to an awesome specularity effect. The item menu you frequently use.
Here's a perfect example. I begin playing my game alongside IGN's Cory Lewis (ex-IGNcube), Craig Harris (IGNpocket), and Mary Jane (Intern). The first thing I want to do is check to see if there are any spells I might want to equip in the stead of the ones already activated. Without the Game Boy Advance the action would have to come to a screeching halt with the aid of a nasty pause screen, because to see my menu it'd have to occupy the screen. Now, I would argue that with the menus being so small, it probably would have been possible for Game Designers Studio to create a small menu that drops down from where your name sits on the screen. Having to turn your head away from the action is pretty nerve-racking and you're not even allowing your peripheral view to keep track of your character.
Crystal Chronicles PvP. Here I've created a quick picture-versus-picture video of the GameCube running next to what you see on your GBA. This demonstrates how the map works, pointing out enemies, gates, treasure, and the surrounding paths. You'll also see your GBA screen shakes when you are stuck by an enemy, which is another way of smacking you in the back of your head and reminding you to look at the TV.

Conversely, it could be argued that menu drop downs on-screen could be extremely distracting and pretty difficult to read on smaller televisions. The thing about Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is that it requires constant menu navigation in the midst of intense battles. To have everyone cluttering the screen with their menus would probably have been disastrous.
From what I've played of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, however, my gut instinct tells me that the GBA is nothing but a gimmick band-aid fix. Yes, it's a very lovely thought to have four good friends crowded around the TV, with the warmth of the electron beam glowing from their faces, while putting their GBAs to good use. Unfortunately, we had a few complications while playing. Because the GBA-GCN link cable cords are so short, we lost connection to a few of the GBAs several times. Thank product testing for implementing a solution that lets you simply reconnect and reboot your GBA to get right back in the game (which you can pause during the process). Furthermore, playing the game without a GBA SP is just rather painful (I know, I had to do it).
The ultimate solution would have been to allow not only LAN play, but full-fledged four-person online play. While Square Enix lets the masses enjoy FFXI online, it seems GameCube's Final Fantasy received less attention. For me, LAN play would have worked wonderfully at home with my two roommates or especially at a place like college. I mean, think about it. It's pretty hard to find three dedicated friends who own a GBA plus link cables. We had to scramble here at the IGN office just to make it happen.
Why end talk of multiplayer on a bad note, though? Once you actually do get multiple hooked up with their GBAs playing Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, it's a blast. The only question now is how deep does FFCC get? Does it simply continue forward through new worlds with new bosses, or is does the gameplay deepen with experience levels, more weapons, and more storyline?
I'm eager to find out. In the mean time, come drool with me over the visuals and turn the page.
This is sure to impress most off the bat -- I know it did for me. While I wanted to see the absolutely gorgeous pre-rendered FMV that Square is known for, I was also pleasantly surprised by the detailed real-time sequences. It really shows off how talented the artists on this project are, as well as the programmers, really.
Check it out for yourself right here. There are no spoilers since it's just game world snippets:
