Een keer staan John, Pete en Keith in de kerk, de tweede keer als begeleidingsband voor Elton John. Keith trapt zijn drumstel in het rond, en Pete slaat zijn Les Paul aan barrels. Geruchten gaan dat hij toen een meisje op haar hoofd geslagen heeft. Om het goed te maken heeft hij toen de Les Paul aan haar geschonken.

Je moet deze film eigenlijk een keertje zien. Ik kan nu wel een hoop gaan vertellen, over een erotische scène met witte bonen in tomatensaus en Ann-Margret kronkelend op een sofa, spartelend in modder; over Keith als duistere portier in de nachtclub, over Roger die radslagen maakt over het strand; over de kracht van de spiegel, waarin Tommy allerlei dingen ziet.... maar ja...
Hoofdrolspelers:

De muziek is niet dezelfde als op de originele "Tommy" uit 1969, maar is helemaal opnieuw ingespeeld en hier en daar ge-update. Townshend gebruikt nu meer synthesizers dan gitaar, en op een aantal tracks drumt Kenny Jones mee. Naast Roger zingen ook een aantal hoofdrolspelers mee. Maar of we hier zo blij mee moeten zijn...Jack Nicolson die "Go To The Mirror" probeert te vertolken, was misschien niet zo'n geweldige keus. Pete: "The one person I tried to keep out of the movie, was Jack Nicolson". Tina Turner vertolkt de "Acid Queen". Tina was niet zo goed op de hoogte van haar rol. Tina: "And suddenly I realized: 'Oh my God! I'm promoting DRUGS!'". Oliver Reed bromt ook een paar keer tussendoor, vooral bij "Do You Think It's Alright". Ann-Margret zingt ook een aantal keer. Ze is geen perfecte zangeres, maar het resultaat mag er best wezen. Ze schittert o.a. op de nieuwe nummers "Champagne" en "Mother & Son". Daarnaast nog Elton John met een drastisch gewijzigde versie van "Pinball Wizard", en Eric Clapton, nog half worstelend met zijn drugsverleden als 'The Hawker'.

NME originals - The Who
Uncut and New Musical Express have released the latest in their collection 'NME Originals' and it's on The Who.
Taken from the music papers archive the 146 page magazine looks at the career of the band through the eyes of the NME journalists.
It's a fascinating document with lots of rare photos and is available in the UK now, price 5.50 pounds.

De Engelse krant "The Guardian" heeft een test gedaan. Ze lieten een aantal kinderen van een jaar of 6, 7 luisteren naar een aantal klassieke rockplaten. Naast hun commentaar mochten ze ook de plaat stopzetten wanneer ze er genoeg van hadden. Daarnaast de vraag: "Is dit beter dan Busted?" (Dat punkgroepje met de hit "Year 3000").

Guitarist Pete Townshend and vocalist Roger Daltrey recruit Greg Lake to help complete the next album by The Who.
Greg Lake completed a week of recording in London with Guitarist/ songwriter Pete Townshend and vocalist Roger Daltrey cutting material scheduled to be part of the next Who album. Also involved in the sessions were longtime Who musicians, drummer Zak Starkey, keyboardist John Rabbit Bundick and guitarist Simon Townshend (Petes brother).
I was asked by Roger Daltrey to participate in his benefit concert for the National Teenage Cancer Trust last month with an great band made of other musicians such as Gary Moore, Gary Brooker, Simon Townshend and others, says Lake. And, of course, we did a healthy amount of Who classics in the show. A week later, Roger called me at home and asked if I was interested in playing bass on the next sessions for The Who. I immediately said yes, since The Who were among the bands I have always admired. Being asked to play with them has been a tremendous honor and wonderful experience, although filling the shoes of the late John Entwistle has not been easy. He was one of the greatest bassists of all time.
Although it is not clear how many additional Who recordings will feature Lake on bass or whether he will tour with the band in the future, Lake completed his work on one new Who song entitled Good Looking Boy.
On the official Peter Townsend and Who websites, Townshend issued the following entry in his diary: Looks like we're on. Greg Lake filled in beautifully. Smashing fellow. Zak, Rabbit and my brother Simon played brilliantly and Roger and I were bloody useless. But what do you expect of two such creaky old tossers?
I am back in my own studio again preparing songs and visual material for some kind of future project, which I hope will provide a pathway of some kind for Roger and me in the future. Whatever happens, Roger and I are facing our 'new' Everly Brothers format with excitement and trepidation. I sense great chaotic madness ahead.......Is that good?
Lake also continues to finish his own solo album and has also resumed work on other projects.

Greg Lake has signed with Trinifold Management, based in London, England. Trinifold, part of the Sanctuary Music Group, manages the careers of both Led Zeppelin and The Who, among others. In addition to Robert Rosenberg and Bill Curbishley from Trinifold, Lake's long time associate, Bruce Pilato and his company, will remain part of his strategic management team, with that base remaining in the United States, and working in conjunction with Trinifold.

BRYAN APPLEYARD makes it look as though the Darkness's froth represented some refreshingly smart and satirical response to Pop Idol or West End rock musicals (Culture, last week). The Darkness are a mischievous pop parody of mischievous pop parody that has gone before. Like those whose parodies they echo they do not attempt to advance the reflective song, which is surely the only important mission of rock.
Appleyard cites "concept albums" like the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper and the Who's Tommy (as many journalists lazily do when looking for a time-fulcrum) signifying the beginning of rock and pop's retentiousness. In the rapid chronology of 1960s pop Tommy (1969) was itself already partly parodying ambitious and massively successful "concept" albums like Sergeant Pepper (1967) and the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds (1966). Like the Darkness, we were teasing our own heroes.
I very much like the idea of the Darkness. I think they play their instruments very well and very quickly. I can't wait to see them parodied.

Daarna kregen ze een nieuwe manager, Kit Lambert, die voorstelde om de band The High Numbers te noemen. "Numbers" was een mod-term, en zoals je misschien weet, waren de Mods & Rockers toen behoorlijk actief. Ze namen wat nummers op, zoals "I'm The Face" (dat uitgebracht werd op single), "Zoot Suit", "Leaving Here" en "Here 'Tis", maar veranderden toen weer terug naar The Who. En toen begonnen ze met eigen nummers (zoals "It Was You", "Can't Explain", "You Don't Have To Jerk" (wat de single ná "Can't Explain" had moeten zijn), en "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere"). De muziek die The High Numbers waren, was echt r&b, The Who begon met r&b en ging vandaar uit meer naar de rock-kant.

The John Entwistle Foundation is holding an evening auction/performance at B.B. King's on Sunday, March 7th
The auction will feature an eclectic gathering of autographed memorabilia. Of course there will be lots of Entwistle items some of which have been donated by Johns family and friends of the foundation. A complete list of items will appear on Johns page: www.johnentwistle.com as soon as the items have been received and cataloged.
The entertainment will be provided by TorQue. The band will devote a good portion of the set to Johns solo material. We will provide you with additional information as it becomes available.
The foundation was named for Entwistle who died of a heart attack on June 27th 2002 on the eve of a national tour by The Who. Steve Luongo drummer and vocalist for TorQue is also the executive director of the John Entwistle Foundation.
Three of the members of TorQue have had direct relationships with the late bassist for The Who. And some of Entwistles material is featured on the new TorQue release.
The foundation supports the following 3 areas of philanthropy: heart disease prevention, childrens musical education and animal welfare. The foundation is a non-profit corporation that is sanctioned by the United States Government.
Gibson Montana and rock icon Pete Townshend have recreated the 1960s J-200 that he used to pen such classic hits as "Pinball Wizard" from The Who's 1969 rock opera Tommy and "Won't Get Fooled Again." The new Pete Townshend SJ-200 Limited has all the classic appointments of his vintage guitar, plus a pickup and a lighter neck contour. Townshend currently uses the guitar in all of his acoustic performances.
"The guitar is perfect - a labor of love," Townshend says. "I would no more smash this than smash my own right hand." A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the guitar will go to benefit Townshend's Double O charity, which assists abused children as well as people with drug and alcohol addictions.
The Pete Townshend SJ-200 Limited has a spruce top with curly maple back and sides. The Madagascar rosewood fingerboard is augmented with a solid Moustache bridge for added volume, mother of pearl crown inlays and mother of pearl "Pete Townshend" signature at the end of the fingerboard. An antique natural finish with 1960s-style gold Grover tuners and ornamental black "stinger" on the back of the headstock complete the vintage look. The specially tailored neck contour and pickup give it a stage-ready feel and sound.
Pete Townshend, guitarist for The Who, is known as much for his flamboyant guitar-playing as his creative writing genius. His wild, windmill-style guitar solos are lengendary, and The Who was one of the major forces in the British Invasion that swept 1960s rock. Townshend went on to have a successful solo career - his 1980 album Empty Glass went platinum and spawned the Top 10 hit "Let My Love Open the Door." Townshend's Broadway adaptation of Tommy, entitled "The Who's Tommy", won him a Tony award in 1993 for "Best Musical Score."
