Wat platvloers.

Tiggy weet dat ze een speciaal plekje in onze hartjes heeft, dat hoeft niet zo schreeuwerig benadrukt te worden.

Features
Burnout 2 launched on the PlayStation 2 in October 2002. It was not seen on GameCube until roughly April 2003 -- six months later. Finally, it launched on Xbox in May 2003. Over the course of its lifecycle it picked up extra content and features for each console.

The PlayStation features a lengthy Championship mode, Crash mode (up to four players), two-player races, Custom Series Championship, and six track locations. As the launch title, it was the very core of the game, and as a result it has all the most important features.

When it arrived on GameCube, Criterion took the time to include 15 additional crash junctions in the Crash mode over the PS2. This was the biggest change in features.

On Xbox, the story is different. Not only did it get the additional 15 crash junctions that GameCube did, but it has 21 additional car skins, a customizeable soundtrack option, and Xbox Live support. It even got an addition to the official title: Burnout 2: Point of Impact - Director's Cut.

Getting the picture? Criterion specifically took more time with the Xbox version and gave it a bigger features set.

Winner: Xbox
Runner-up GameCube

Control
As this game is a racer, it doesn't exactly require a huge amount of buttons. There is the element of having enough room to fit manual transmission shifting on the controller, but let us clear that up for you now -- it's not an issue. Honestly, Burnout 2 is not made to be driven like that. Sure, manual is fun and challenging, but with an arcade racer this quick and this erratic, automatic is the best way to play. That said, none of the controllers really benefit from their buttons layouts.

However, there is a distinguishable difference in controller sensitivity, which is mostly inherent to the controllers themselves. On the PlayStation 2, Burnout 2 controls nicely with the left analog stick; in fact, it's a lot better than it was last year. However, when compared to GameCube and Xbox, you can tell it doesn't quite have as much sensitivity.

The difference is minimal, but because this racer asks you to perform near-miss drive-bys unto other vehicles of the road, that small difference does count. For that reason, the PS2 version isn't quite as good as GameCube and Xbox. Likewise, some might argue that GameCube's left analog stick provides a slight bit more response than Xbox's, but that gap is far smaller than the leap to PS2. So we couldn't say conclusively this is a fact.

Winner: GameCube/Xbox (Tie)

Sound
Like a sledgehammer to your forehead it should be apparent that the Xbox version owns the best audio. Not only does it have true Dolby Digital 5.1 -- yea, that means you can actually hear the subwoofer (LFE) too -- but it also has a customizable soundtrack option thanks to the Xbox's hard drive as well as the inclusion of a seemingly remastered version of the original Burnout score.

There's really no competition from the other two consoles. It's not that they don't sound good, they do -- both with Dolby Pro Logic II support -- but Xbox's clarity, custom soundtrack support, and extra tracks far outweigh the experience on GameCube and PlayStation 2.

Winner: Xbox

Graphics
Burnout 2: Point of Impact surprised us. Criterion has had experience on all three consoles, and we expected the results to be very similar to what they were last year: PS2 good, GameCube Great, and Xbox excellent. As it turns out, that's not entirely true for this year's versions.

All three versions run at a nearly flawless 60 frames per second. They all have their rare moments where the framerate gets caught up while particle effects process, but the sense of speed is equal in all the versions.

One of the big visual features this year is the addition of intense specular lighting effects. This effect is used to show sun reflecting off the surface of roads, buildings, and the cars themselves. As you can see in the screenshot above, all three versions feature this effect. However, as it turns out, it's the PlayStation 2 and Xbox that do it best.

We were shocked to see just how solid this engine is on the PlayStation 2. Sony's console might have its troubles with jaggies and flickering, but when it comes to Burnout 2 the results are amazing. It has a sharper look than GameCube and Xbox. Like we noted, it has the usual "raw" look that the PS2 does, but it looks amazing. Plus, when you're flying down the streets at such a fast speed, you don't as frequently acknowledge the drawbacks of jaggedness and flicker.

This picture (above) really says it all. Just look at the fantastic bloom effects on the building windows in the PlayStation 2 version. Likewise, Xbox has some similarly nice effects. Xbox also has the advantage of anti-aliasing over the PS2 in addition to these same specular effects. There seems to better lighting and shadowing as well.

Finally, Criterion indicated to us that the Xbox version actually has more complex vehicle models. They have more polygons to make them a bit more full. On a few of the models you can tell the difference, but it's certainly nothing huge.

So, what's the verdict on the winner? Xbox takes the cup because it has all the specular trimmings that PlayStation 2 does in addition to better lighting, anti-aliasing, and an overall more polished look. However, PS2 is our runner-up despite the drawbacks jaggies or flickering. GameCube, even though it looks smooth and improved over last year's version, does not have the same caliber lighting and reflection effects that the other two do.

All three versions feature progressive scan and widescreen support.

Winner: Xbox
Runner-up: PlayStation 2

Presentation
This section is mostly comprised the load times, and we think you'll be shocked to hear the results. All three versions averaged loads of around seven seconds. Yes, that includes the PlayStation 2. We noticed GameCube and Xbox had the advantage on the PS2 by milliseconds, sometimes nearing a second, but it's nothing you can't tell without the aid of a stopwatch.

Criterion really did an amazing job with the PlayStation 2 hardware -- this Head-to-Head comparison really opened our eyes to that fact.

Otherwise, for presentation, it's clear that the Xbox wins out; it is the Director's Cut, after all. It got the special treatment and it shows with things like Xbox Live support. Sure, you're only able to store your records and tout them on the Xbox Live scoreboards, but it's a nice addition.

Winner: Xbox

Final Verdict
We were really surprised by the differences between the three different versions of Burnout 2. Namely the graphics treatment of PlayStation 2 versus GameCube. Last year the softer look of GameCube was a definite advantage, but this year PlayStation 2's sharpness in combination with all the specular effects beats out GameCube. Xbox has the best of both worlds.

As well, Xbox also has the online support, more car colors and skins to choose from, and better audio -- even custom soundtrack support. You can't beat that. The Xbox version is clearly the best.

If you don't have an Xbox or are more interested in using GameCube's controller over the PlayStation 2, it's important to consider that there are 15 additional crash junctions. The Crash Mode is one of the most entertaining parts of Point of Impact and those additional junctions hold a lot of weight. So, despite the clean graphics of the PS2, we still recommend GameCube as the second-best choice. Of course, if you don't care for the Crash Mode, definitely look into the PlayStation 2 version.

The PlayStation 2 and GameCube versions are retailed for a suggested price of $39.99 compared to Xbox's $49.99 (as of June 6, 2003). We think the extra polish, soundtrack support, and online functionality is worth that price increase, but you should be aware of it.

Of course, they're all worth getting. So, whichever version you choose, we think you'll be pleased. Drive unsafely!

Overall Winner: Xbox
Runner-up: GameCube
