Drug companies say SARS vaccine may take at least 5 years to produce

Some experts in the pharmaceutical industry said it would take at least five years before a vaccine for SARS can be produced.
They said this at the recently concluded International Students Conference in Switzerland.The race has been on ever since the SARS outbreak to first, develop a diagnostic kit that can help identify the virus and then a vaccine against it.
Some predicted it would take two years to develop a vaccine. Drug companies have dismissed this.
Dr Franz Humer, Chairman and CEO of Hoffman-La Roche AG, said: "If somebody claims they will have a vaccine for SARS in two years, this is a fairy tale. It will take at least somewhere between five and 15 years."
They say many issues remain unresolved, such as how quickly a virus mutates and how it moves from one host to another.
The mutation of the virus is particularly tricky as each vaccine normally targets only one version of a virus.
Dr Humer added: "A vaccine may only work against one specific virus but at the time of the next outbreak of SARS, that virus may have changed and the vaccine may no longer be effective."
This is especially since the coronavirus, the family of viruses which SARS comes from, mutates easily.
Dr Rolf Krebs, Chairman of Board of Managing Directors at Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH, said: "With mutability of the coronavirus, which is a very high possibility, you may have a situation where aggressive viruses are found and the vaccine - and you must go through clinical development again."
So, it looks like the race for a vaccine will take longer to complete.

Voor de duidelijkheid, ik zit zelf in Singapore en heb er hier nog niet veel over gehoord. Ik geef les op een HBO en waarschijnlijk moet iedereen (docenten en leerlingen) twee keer per dag hun temperatuur opnemen. Dit was juist anderhalve maand geleden afgeschaft, omdat de dreiging voorbij zou zijn.

SINGAPORE -- A Singapore man has tested positive for the SARS virus four month's after the last case was recorded in the island state.Health officials confirmed the case after a second test was carried out on the 27-year-old laboratory technician Tuesday.
"It appears to be a single isolated case," the Ministry of Health said in a statement.
According to Singapore's Straits Times newspaper the man in question, a Singaporean citizen, worked in a virology laboratory and has not traveled to China or Hong Kong recently.
He has been placed in isolation at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore's dedicated facility for severe acute respiratory syndrome cases.
Peter Cordingley, the WHO's regional head of public information based in the Philippines, said authorities had already traced people who had recent contact with the man concerned and none was sick.
Singapore last reported a case of SARS in early May and on July 5 the WHO declared the virus outbreak contained around the world.
Despite that, scientists say they know little about the disease and have warned that it could make a return.
The outbreak of the disease, thought to have originated in southern China's Guangdong province, killed more than 800 people and sickened about 8,000 around the world earlier this year.
The disease had a huge impact on tourism and travel, especially in East Asia with fears over the outbreak leading many tourists and business travelers avoiding visits to the area.
In Singapore -- one of the worst affected areas after China, Taiwan and Hong Kong -- the virus killed 33 people and put more than 300 in hospital.
When the announcement of a possible new case emerged Monday, authorities kick-started emergency isolation procedures at Singapore General Hospital where the patient, who has not been named, first sought treatment.
Three wards have been closed to the public at what is the city's largest public hospital.
Visitors are required to wear facemasks and screened for fever upon entering the hospital.

SINGAPORE - A 27-year-old researcher confirmed by Singapore officials as being the country's first Sars case in four months probably caught the disease while working in a laboratory that is investigating the virus, a minister said on Wednesday.'The single case is an isolated case. There is no person-to-person transmission. So there is no outbreak... There is no danger to public health,' Singapore's Minister of State for Health Balaji Sadasivan said in an interview with The Associated Press in the Philippines.
Despite Singapore's confirmation of the disease on Tuesday, the World Health Organisation has declined so far to treat the case as confirmed Sars, saying more tests are needed, and added that it has no plans yet to issue any warnings against travel to the city-state.
The man, whose name has not been released, worked in two government labs that studied the Sars virus, and probably caught the disease during a visit to one of the labs on Aug 23, Mr Balaji said.
Health officials in Singapore confirmed that he visited the National Environment Agency lab on that date. Both labs have since been closed and 25 people who were in contact with the man were quarantined for 10 days.
'His exposure to the Sars virus is the most likely linked to that laboratory...where the Sars virus is cultured,' said Mr Balaji, who was in Manila for a health conference. 'We need to review the safety procedures in the laboratory.'
Health Ministry spokesman Bey Mui Leng said that although samples of the man's blood have been sent to the United States for further testing, Singapore may continue to treat the man as a Sars carrier even if the US results contradict the positive results obtained locally. -- AP
