Rumour Mill #8 - April. Part A
Posted on "10/04/2003"Welcome to another Rumour Mill! Quite a big Rumour Mill for you this edition, because after contacting Nintendo of America about E3 information; I will now be able to give you an official list of some of the main games that are set to be unveiled at the show! There is some great games coming to E3 and I honestly cant wait to see what they look like Anyway Ill leave you with the latest rumours floating around the different media sources.
Rumour One *** GAMINGCUBED EXCLUSIVE*** - Nintendo at E3!!!
So after all the talk of what was going to be going on at the Electronic Entertainment Exposition, I got given to me an e-mail address which should give me some information. I then used this e-mail address to ask about E3and to my shock I got a response. Not ground breaking but it does confirm a lot of the titles at the show. Here is the response I got:
Although it's no secret that Nintendo is working on a ton of great upcoming titles for the Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy Advance, I'm not sure what we'll have to show off at E3. It's pretty common knowledge that we are coming out with F-Zero, Mario Golf, Wario World, 1080º: Avalanche, Kirby's Air Ride, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Metroid Prime 2, Pikmin 2, and others, but I'm not sure what will be available for public viewing. Nintendo's always had a few tricks up our sleeves, so expect the unexpected.
Was it just me are did I see Metroid Prime 2 in that list? I havent even finished the first game yet!!! Metroid Prime 2 will be the bomb! I cant wait for this show. Its also interesting that I was told to expect the unexpected. Ill go out on a limb here and say that Nintendo will be revealing online plans at the show plus I wouldnt be surprised if the Cubes successor will be there if it is going to be released as early as people say it is. See Rumor 2 if you havent heard. I then replied asking about third party support at the show and this is what he had to say:
Last year we have numerous licensee titles in our booth, so hopefully we'll learn more about titles like Dead Phoenix, Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life, The Italian Job, Killer 7, Metal Gear Solid, Soul Calibur II, Viewtiful Joe, and other anticipated Nintendo GameCube games. I know that Capcom, Activision, THQ, and other major players in the game will have a strong presence at E3 next month.
Interesting to see that Capcom was mentioned for having strong support at the show. I though they were backing away from the Gamecube? Its nice to see that third parties will have strong Nintendo presence at the show. Oh I cant wait!
Rumour Rating - 10/10
Rumour Bite We know that Hideo Kojima and Shigeru Miyamoto are both creating Metal Gear for the Gamecube, but it was widely speculated that they are working on another title together. If you read Gamingcubeds interview with Konami Europe, you can be sure that this is totally false.
Rumour Rating 3/10Rumour Two Nintendo to Release Console in 2004?????
Yes you heard me right, a famous Japanese paper said that the successor for the Gamecube is being prepped for an Autumn 2004 release in Japan. This should mean a Christmas release in America and probably another May 2005 release for us Europeans. I actually found this hard to believe until Steve Merrett refused to comment on anything about the successor of Nintendos console but confirmed that they do know something about it. Frustratingly he wouldnt tell me, but you can rest assured Im on the case. Ive been trying to get in contact with Namco, Capcom and EA regarding information. They promised they would get back to me. Interesting to note that the sequel to the Wind Waker is scheduled for a late 2004 release as well. Could this be a launch title for the Cubes successor???
Rumour Rating 6/10
Rumour Bite It has been heavily reported that after Resident Evil Four has been completed the next in the series will go multi-format. I actually think that Resident Evil Four will be the last Resident Evil game of this generation and that Resident Evil Five will be coming to PS3, X Box 2 or Gamecube 2.
Rumour Rating 7/10Final Rumour X Box Price Drop
A final rumour for to day is that the X Box may drop in price to £130 this Friday. Most likely true as Gamecube has re-overtaken X Box in Europe, so look for an announcement very very soon. This of course will mean a drop in price for the Gamecube in order to stay in the run for second place.
Rumour Rating 8/10That is all from me today, Ill see you later!

Nintendo Cuts Royalty Rates to Woo Game Developers
Thu April 10, 2003 03:53 PM ET
By Franklin PaulNEW YORK (Reuters) - Nintendo Co. Ltd. on Thursday said it has trimmed the royalty rates it charges outside game developers, in an effort beef up the roster of hit titles available on its flagging GameCube console.
Japan's Nintendo, third behind Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox game console, said that in March it adjusted its royalty rate structure for all licensees to make it competitive with its rivals.
"Before our royalty rate was a little more aggressive so to the third party publisher it was a little less attractive to make games for GameCube," George Harrison, senior vice president of marketing for Nintendo of America, told Reuters.
Software is a catalyst for the gaming industry, with hit titles spurring sales of boxes on which they are exclusively available. In turn, consumers then seek to buy more games for the particular machine they own.
What is more, games developed by console makers are a profit engine, while major third-party publishers typically pay a royalty to the console maker and keep the lion's share of profits for themselves.
Nintendo earlier this week blamed a slump in profits on GameCube, whose sales fell short of its target of 10 million by 44 percent for 2002.
The company admitted that new titles in its long-running 'Mario' and 'Metroid' series were overshadowed by blockbuster demand for "Grand Theft Auto" (GTA) games, developed for the PlayStation 2 by publisher Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.
"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City," released in the United States last October, was the best-selling game of 2002 and has sold about five million units worldwide.
"The biggest games of the year last year were games like GTA and they came from an independent publisher," Harrison said. "We need to make sure that we have good relationships with all the independent publishers, because you never know where the next big hit game is going to come from."
Nintendo intends to place more emphasis on third-party game developers at the upcoming E3 trade show in Las Vegas in May, the largest annual exhibition for Gaming industry. Several developers, who see a large installed base of a game platform as a guarantee that audience exists for their titles, have complained about GameCube slack sales.
"Games from Namco Ltd. and Sega Corp. and Capcom Co. Ltd... we think are going to be just as important in helping to sell our hardware system this year as much as our own games," he said. "We are going to sell a lot of GameCube and its our job to convince them that we are."
