Adrien Brody Also Joins Jackson's King Kong
Source: Variety Wednesday, March 31, 2004

Adrien Brody (The Pianist) is in talks with Universal Pictures to join the cast of Peter Jackson's King Kong, says Variety.

The Oscar winner has been offered the role of Jack Driscoll, a former World War I fighter pilot who is the love interest for archaeologist Ann Darrow, to be played by Naomi Watts.

On Monday, the studio announced that Jack Black will play showman Carl Denham who brings the giant gorilla to New York City from Skull Island.

Filling the Driscoll role is the last major casting to be done for the film, adds the trade. In the 1933 original, Driscoll spends much of the film trying to rescue Ann Darrow from Kong after the ape takes a liking to the beauty.

Peter Jackson Talks King Kong
Source: Entertainment Weekly Monday, April 26, 2004

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly includes an interview with "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy director Peter Jackson talking about his upcoming adaptation of King Kong. Naomi Watts will play the big ape's love object, Ann Darrow. Adrien Brody will play Darrow's boyfriend, former WWII pilot Jack Driscoll, and Jack Black will be blustery adventurer Carl Denham, who imports Kong to Manhattan.

"We are not reinventing it," says Jackson referring to the 1933 original film. "Our story follows the same structure. It starts in New York, goes to Skull Island, and there's dinosaurs on the island. Then it comes back to New York and there's the Empire State Building and the biplanes and the whole thing."

He says that one thing they're trying to do that the original didn't is to make it more "emotionally truthful. I put that ahead of anything else, including technology and the realism of the effects," he adds.

"Everybody's image of 'King Kong' is that it's this amazing beauty-and-the-beast love story. And when you look at the original film, there is as sense that Kong is feeling an attraction toward Ann-probably the first empathy he's felt in his life toward another living creature. But Ann is not giving him a thing. She just looks at him as an object of horror the entire time. She screams at him, she's terrified. Her relationship with Kong doesn't go beyond that. We're having a lot of fun making it more psychologically real."

Ik vraag me toch af waarom Jackson voor King Kong gekozen heeft. Het is al een paar keer gedaan en er valt weinig eer aan te behalen.

Andy Serkis is King Kong!
Source: The Hollywood Reporter Friday, June 11, 2004

Andy Serkis, who brought to life Gollum's movements and voice in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, is reuniting with Peter Jackson to become the man behind the monster in Universal Pictures' King Kong.

Like he did for Gollum, Serkis will provide motion capture reference for the character of Kong, who will eventually be realized as a completely computer-generated creature.

Serkis also has been cast as Lumpy the cook, a member of the crew of the Venture, the tramp steamer that sails to Skull Island.

"I expect this time round will be a very different experience for both Andy and myself as we'll actually get to shoot extended drama sequences together," Jackson said. "It will be a little weird seeing Andy out of his Gollum gimp suit -- and I hope we can both make the adjustment!"

Commenting on Kong himself, Jackson said: "While Andy will provide very valuable onset reference, this doesn't mean we will be softening Kong by attempting to humanize him. The power of the story lies in the fact that this is a savage beast from a hostile environment, and we don't intend to compromise that."

Serkis joins Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody in the cast. Jackson and his "Rings" colleagues, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, are writing, with Jackson and Walsh also producing.

Peter Jackson's movie King Kong, which begins shooting in Wellington next month, will be a reunion of the director's dream team from The Lord of The Rings.

King Kong's crew includes cinematographer Andrew Lesnie, production designer Grant Major, art director Dan Hennah, conceptual designer Alan Lee, Weta special effects whizz Richard Taylor, visual effects director Alex Funke, visual effects supervisor Joe Letteri and composer Howard Shore.

All won Oscars for their work on The Lord of the Rings.

King Kong's backers, Universal Studios, had announced some of the cast and crew, along with Jackson's co-writers, The Lord of the Rings Oscar winners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. However, they have yet to announce all key crew appointments.

Rumours have also continued to circulate that some of the filming will take place outside New Zealand. Several American websites reported that some exterior scenes of New York City were shot in a Los Angeles backlot in May. Bangkok newspaper The Nation reported last month that Jackson "will probably choose Thailand as the location for some parts".

A King Kong spokeswoman dismissed the reports. "There has certainly never been any indication that anything would be filmed outside New Zealand. It's just like The Lord of the Rings," she said.

Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody, who is expected to arrive in New Zealand this month for five months' work, will play World War 1 flying ace Jack Driscoll. Brody has been dating supermodel Naomi Campbell.

AdvertisementAdvertisementThe two were at the July premiere of Brody's latest movie, The Village, which is the No. 1 film in the United States this week.

Brody told USA Today that King Kong "is the perfect balance for me. It's with a director who I really admire. I think it will be an exciting action-packed kind of experience. And fun for the most part."

Naomi Watts will play Ann Darrow, the part played by Fay Wray in the original King Kong movie.

"Peter Jackson is a genius. He will make it his own and do something completely different and modernise it, even though it's set in the 30s. He's got some great ideas, which I'm not at liberty to divulge right now," she said in a recent interview.

Other stars announced for Jackson's movie are Jack Black as film-maker Carl Denham, Colin Hanks - son of actor Tom Hanks - as his assistant and Kyle Chandler as a young actor.

Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, will play Lumpy the cook and will be the basis for the movements and voice of the computer-generated Kong. German actor Thomas Kretschmann will play The Venture's skipper, Captain Englehorn, Billy Elliott star Jamie Bell will appear as ship's lookout and Jamaican-born Evan Parke as first mate and a World War 1 veteran

Ja idd, was ook eerder gezegd, met wijlen Fay Wray.

Mijn eerste reactie was: King Kong???

Day 1: Peter Jackson welcomes the fans to kongisking.net from the set on the first night of shooting. He's on the backlot, where we can see the exterior of the Venture, surrounded by bluescreen, as they're waiting for darkness to begin shooting.

Day 4: Today they're filming a scene in a diner where some characters are introduced, who participate in the voyage. (this scene is also in the original film). PJ takes us on a tour around the diner-set, including some of the meals. He also introduces us to Naomie Watts and Jack Black in full costume! Naomies hat is based on Fay Wray's in the original movie, a small homage to the old film.

Day 6: It's a rainy day, exterior scenes being shot on the Venture. The scene involves Jack Black and Adrian Brody walking on the deck. PJ directs them for fun and lets them waggle a bit, to indicate the boat is rocking back and forth. The set itself does not move.

Day 7: Shot entirely inside the Venture (studio B, where Bag End for LotR was also built). The interior is deliberately built 'narrow & pokey" (quote from PJ) and the ship is kinda rundown.

Day 8: Alex Funke is handling miniature trees for the jungle scenes in a scale of 20. The Main unit was on the backlot, on the ship, filming Jack Black scenes in which he is filming himself.

Day 10: We get to see a planespotter, who alerts the crew when a plane is about to land/take off. (And man, that is some noise! No wonder LotR peeps spoke a lot about it on the DVD's. That's massive noise).

Day 12: Nightshooting. Lots of water and fans is being used to create the feel of the Venture being in a storm. Characters have to roll and fall as they go in the scenes. It is shot with handcamera's. Colin Hanks is soaked to the bone, telling us he's very cold. The waves will be done by computer. Adrian Brody pee's in his wetsuit.
