Amerikaanse mariniers zouden bij de Iraaks-Koeweitse grens in gevecht zijn verwikkeld met Iraakse troepen. Ook zouden Iraakse manschappen zich hebben overgegeven aan Amerikaanse mariniers kort nadat die de Iraakse grens waren overgestoken, zo melden de Amerikaanse zenders CBS en ABC. Om hoeveel Iraakse soldaten het gaat is nog niet duidelijk.

Havenstad Basra

De Amerikaanse en Britse grondtroepen lijken de korte kustlijn van Irak al wel veroverd te hebben. Britse infanteristen hebben het Iraakse schiereiland Al-Faw ingenomen. Volgens het Arabische nieuwsstation al-Jazeera is de inname bedoeld om strategische posities in te nemen voor een opmars naar de noordelijker gelegen stad Basra.

Het was de eerste keer dat de Britse strijdkrachten in actie kwamen. Circa zestig Iraakse soldaten hebben zich aan de Britse mariniers overgegeven. Dat meldt de BBC.

Verscheidene persbureaus melden dat er in de buurt van de strategische havenstad Basra enorme explosies zijn geweest waarbij reusachtige vuurballen te zien waren. Basra is het centrum van de Iraakse olie-industrie. Het is nog onbekend hoever de Amerikaanse en Britse grondtroepen opgerukt zijn naar de stad.

Brandende oliebronnen
Sommige journalisten gaan ervan uit dat de Irakezen olie-installaties in brand hebben gestoken en springstof-ladingen tot ontploffing hebben gebracht. De Amerikaanse minister van Defensie Rumsfeld heeft verklaard over aanwijzingen beschikken dat de Irakezen drie of vier oliebronnen in het zuiden van Irak in brand hebben gestoken. Maar deze berichten zijn niet bevestigd.
Amerikaanse troepen zouden ook de kustplaats Umm Qasr hebben veroverd, maar de Iraakse staatstelevisie ontkent dat. De stad is de enige belangrijke zeehaven van Irak en ligt op een strategische weg richting Basra.

Bagdad onder vuur
De hoofdstad Bagdad kwam gisteravond opnieuw onder vuur te liggen. Om18.15 uur gingen de sirenes van het luchtalarm af en schudde de stad op zijn grondvesten door de zware explosies. Zowel de Amerikanen als de Britten vuurden kruisraketten op de Iraakse hoofdstad af. Doelwit was onder meer een wijk waar overheidsgebouwen en twee van Saddam Husseins paleizen staan.

Boven plaatsen waar raketten insloegen, stegen dikke rookwolken op. Een van de getroffen gebouwen zou het ministerie van Planning zijn. De Iraakse radio bericht dat het woonhuis van Saddam door Amerikaanse raketten is getroffen. Er zouden geen slachtoffers zijn gevallen. Experts meenden te horen dat er zowel Tomahawk-raketten als zware penetrerende bommen zijn ingezet. Inmiddels is het weer rustig in de hoofdstad.

Marines Raise U.S. Flag Over Iraqi Port

UMM QASR, Iraq (Reuters) - U.S. Marines lowered the Iraqi flag over the new port area of Umm Qasr in southern Iraq on Friday and hoisted the Stars and Stripes in its place, Reuters correspondent Adrian Croft reported.
Croft, who is traveling with the Marines, said the U.S. wanted to use the modern port on the southern fringes of Iraq as an entry point for humanitarian aid.

The old port of Umm Qasr, some one mile distant, has not yet been taken, Croft said.

British marines are co-ordinating the assault on Umm Qasr and British military spokesman Colonel Chris Vernon told CNN that the city was not yet entirely under the control of the invading force.

The U.S. Marines poured over the Kuwaiti border just after dawn, but within minutes of stepping foot in Iraq they were pinned down in a two-hour firefight with Iraqi soldiers armed with machineguns and anti-tank rockets.

The battle only ended after British artillery rained a hail of shells onto the Iraqi positions.

The Marines then made swift progress to the new port. As they entered Umm Qasar the soldiers passed two blazing cars and the bodies of two men in civilian clothes lying on the road. A third man drenched in blood sat nearby on the ground surrounded by women who flagged down a Marine medical team to come to his aid.

By the entrance of the new Aluboor Marine Terminal, a huge portrait of Saddam Hussein wearing a Western suit and set into a wall was riddled with bullet holes. The face of the Iraqi leader was unscathed.

U.S. Marines entered the port complex to check it was free of Iraqi soldiers. A short while later six port workers with their hands in the air were escorted from the site.

U.S. commanders said that once they have secured the facility they will use the port workers to help bring in humanitarian shipments.

Forces in Baghdad "hopefully" in 3-4 days

AS SAYLIYA CAMP, Qatar (Reuters) - U.S. and British forces advancing inside Iraq could be in Baghdad in three or four days, the main spokesman for the British forces headquarters in Qatar says.

Asked when invading troops would be in the Iraqi capital, Group Captain Al Lockwood told reporters: "If I were a betting man, which I'm not -- hopefully in the next three or four days."

A wave of B-52 bombers took off today from RAF Fairford.

The giant bombers, which have been expected to play a key role in the bombing of Iraq, took off one after the other from the Gloucestershire base shortly after 10am.
In recent days the eight-engine bombers, which carry an awesome arsenal of weapons including cruise missiles, have been seen being loaded up.
It is the first time that so many of the jets have left the base in one sortie.
The planes, which have an 8,000-mile range, could hit Iraqi targets within around six hours of leaving Britain.

"They targeted the houses of Saddam Hussein and his family, but they are safe. They are safe," said Sahaf, who branded U.S. President George W. Bush as the "leader of the international criminal gang of bastards".

In the first official Iraqi response to the invasion launched earlier on Friday by U.S. and British forces, Sahaf said: "We will not let them leave the swamp they have entered. They will meet their fate."

Allied troops control Iraq's only coast
U.S. thinks Iraqi leadership shaken

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- British troops used a combined air and ground assault Friday to take control of Iraq's Persian Gulf coast, the Faw Peninsula, according to the commander of the Royal Marines landing force.

Col. Steve Cox, the commander of the 40 Commandos, said the pre-dawn assault put coalition forces in control of Iraq's main oil pipeline terminals.

"All our targets were successfully captured," Cox said. "The main thing now is sorting the mess out in the daylight, make sure all the sites are protected and assess the local situation."

And an American flag flew over the Iraqi port of Umm Qasr on Friday after U.S. Marines took control, according to Reuters correspondent Adrian Croft.

So far, the coalition's battle for Iraq has not gone according to the original plan, thanks to the sudden strike on Saddam Hussein's bunker early Thursday morning.

U.S. intelligence and President Bush's administration officials are debating whether Saddam survived the first strike of the war and to what degree his senior leadership has been shaken.

The Washington Post reported in its Friday edition that U.S. intelligence officials believe Saddam and at least one of his two sons, Uday and Qusay, were in the compound at the time of the strike. The Post reported that analysts are unsure whether Saddam was killed or injured.

Regardless of the Iraqi leader's fate, the apparent disarray within the Iraqi leadership was enough to delay the original war plan, which called for an immediate and extensive bombing campaign to create "shock and awe" among Iraqi soldiers. (Full story)

Instead of the massive air strikes, a convoy of U.S. tanks rolled unopposed through the desert toward the Iraqi capital in the second day of the campaign to dislodge Saddam and hi regime.

Dozens of Iraqi troops crossed the southern border into Kuwait to surrender, waving white flags, to British marines.

With U.S. and British forces on the move, and after a day in which Baghdad was bombarded with more than 60 cruise missiles, U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said, "Things are going very well."

"The pressure is continuing on the Iraqi regime, and [the regime] will not be there in the period ahead," he said.

Coalition forces took their first casualties of the campaign when a U.S. Marine CH-46 helicopter crashed in northern Kuwait early Friday morning, killing all 12 people on board -- 8 British military personnel and four American crew members, Pentagon officials said.

There were no indications that hostile fire brought down the helicopter, according to the Pentagon. The accident took place about nine miles south of the Iraqi border.(Full story)

Elsewhere, coalition forces bombed the Iraqi-controlled northern city of Mosul shortly before 4:30 a.m. Friday (8:30 p.m. Thursday EST). Antiaircraft fire was launched, but it was not clear whether any planes were hit.

Friday morning, the 3rd Squadron of the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment, lead element of the 3rd Infantry Division, was heading toward Baghdad unopposed after brushing aside initial resistance as it rolled across the border from Kuwait the night before, according to a CNN correspondent accompanying the troops.

A group of Kiowa scout helicopters, flying no more than 50 feet above the ground, led a convoy of Bradley fighting vehicles and M1A1 Abrams tanks. In the initial skirmish with Iraqi troops, U.S. forces destroyed six or seven trucks and several tanks. (Full story)

The first coalition forces began crossing from Kuwait into Iraq about 8 p.m. (noon EST) Thursday.

KUWAIT CITY (CNN) -- Iraqi troops have set fire to 15 oil wells in southern Iraq, in what appears to be a deliberate act, the Kuwaiti National Guard has said.

A thick haze of dark smoke could be seen over Kuwait City's skyline Friday morning, apparently from the oil field fires.

British officials in Kuwait acknowledged there may be fires near the southern Iraqi city of Basra, but said it was not a major crisis, as they believed their forces would be able to secure the fields largely intact.

Sixty percent of Iraq's oil comes from its southern oil fields.

The news comes one day after U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said "as many as three or four" oil wells could be burning on the Iraqi side of the Iraq-Kuwait border.

Pentagon officials told CNN those fires were at well heads and not in oil-filled trenches.

Rumsfeld called it a "crime for that regime to be destroying the riches of the Iraqi people."

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said satellite images released on Thursday showed plumes consistent "in detecting oil fires in the past from satellites in space."

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has ordered oil wells to be set ablaze in the past.

After his forces invaded Kuwait in August 1990, and coalition forces were massing together to force them out, Saddam said if he had to be evicted by force, then Kuwait would be burned.

As promised, Iraqi troops set fire to more than 700 oil wells in several Kuwaiti oil fields in 1991 as they were retreating.

Officials from the Kuwait Oil Company reported that all of Kuwait's oil fields had been damaged or destroyed by the Iraqis.

The United States helped Kuwait in an international nine-month effort to extinguish the blazes.

Before the fires, Iraq was responsible for intentionally releasing some 11 million barrels of oil into the Arabian Gulf from January to May 1991, oiling more than 800 miles of Kuwaiti and Saudi Arabian coastline.

The amount of oil released was categorized as 20 times larger than the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska and twice as large as the previous world record oil spill.

The cost of cleanup was estimated at more than $700 million.

Australian troops in action

CANBERRA, Australia -- Australian special forces are now operating inside Iraq gathering details on Iraqi troop movements and military targets, Australia's defense department says.

"Our special forces task group has transitioned from the battle-preparation phase ... and is now undertaking active operations inside Iraq," Brigadier Mike Hannan told a news conference in Canberra on Friday.

"The [operations] would include long-range reconnaissance and surveillance operations where they would be seeking detailed information on such things as enemy troop movements, identifying targets such as key military ops and so on," Hannan said.

Australia has committed 150 Special Air Services troops in addition to combat jets, warships and around 1,900 other soldiers, to the U.S.-led attack on Iraq, in what the Australian military have dubbed Operation Falconer.

Australian Prime Minister John Howard confirmed to radio audiences Friday morning the nation's forces had been involved in action against Iraq from the start of the war on Thursday.

"Last night, I spoke by telephone to Brigadier McNarn, who's the Australian Commander in the [Persian] Gulf, and he reported that all of our men and women were in good spirits, their morale was very high," Howard said.

Brigadier Hannan said no Australian forces had been injured in the first phase of the war.

He said Australia's F/A-18 Hornets were flying combat and combat-support operations, providing protection for coalition aircraft against any possible air threats.

"These are demanding missions, and they've seen our aircraft flying well into Iraqi territory," Reuters reports Hannan as saying.

He said the Australian navy was boarding dhows (sailing boats) in the Gulf in the hunt for any escaping Iraqi officials or anyone planting explosives in the harbors and shipping lanes.

"At this point of the operation, our ships are less concerned about contraband than they are with the movement of people who may wish to leave and who we may which to detain, or with the use of the dhows as part of a mining campaign in these narrow waterways," Hannan said.

Australia's government has staunchly supported U.S. President George W. Bush's hard line against Iraq and deployed troops to the Persian Gulf in January in preparation for the war, despite strong public opposition to an attack on Iraq without U.N. approval.

Australian forces also contributed to the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan.

KUWAIT CITY (Reuters) - A Kuwait defense official said coalition Patriot missiles had shot down an Iraqi Scud missile in northwestern Kuwait on Friday.

Air raid sirens sounded in Kuwait City at around 1:05 p.m. local time but the all-clear was sounded shortly afterwards.

"It was a Scud but Patriots hit the Scud," a defense ministry official said.

Iraq fired several Scud missiles toward Kuwait on Thursday, mostly toward U.S. and British rear positions in the north, a British military spokesman said earlier on Friday.

He said the Scuds had not caused any damage. Most were intercepted by Patriot missiles.

Supported by Cobra attack helicopters and howitizers, Marine tanks and armored vehicles rolled through the demilitarized zone between Iraq and Kuwait onto Route 80, which leads to southern Iraq's largest city.

If U.S. forces secure the road, it would speed movement on Basra - 20 miles north of the border. Though the night, the 1st Marine division had been poised in the DMZ, trading mortar fire with Iraqi positions, waiting to break through the sand bergs on the Iraqi side of the zone.

Resistance in the region south of Basra - near the Persian Gulf coast - appeared stiffer than elsewhere along the Iraq border as U.S and British forces opened the ground assault Thursday night, rolling into the desert in several locations.

Further west, some 200 Iraqi soldiers surrendered to the U.S. 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit just over an hour after it crossed the border Friday morning.

One group of 40 Iraqis marched in formation down a two-lane road toward the Americans and gave up. They were told to lie face down on the ground and were searched by the Marines.

At the same time, the Marines cleared bunkers, emerging from one with two Iraqis with bound wrists. One had a dark gray uniform, the other was barefoot. Abandoned weapons mortars were spread over a large area.

Parts of the Marines 1st Division also moved into Iraqi territory overnight, encountering an Iraqi T-55 tank and destroying it with a Javelin, a portable anti-tank missile. Troops from the Army's 3rd Infantry Division destroyed at least three Iraqi armored personnel carriers, front line troops reported by radio.

Elsewhere, U.S. troops met tough resistance. The 7th Marine Infantry's 3rd Batallion apparently had to delay its foray into Iraq after - according to military radios - a large number of previously unknown tanks was sighted on the Iraqi side of the border.

The unit took small arms and artillery fire Thursday night, and at one point a U.S. Cobra helicopter accidentally fired a missile at a U.S. M1 Abrams tank, injuring one soldier and forcing abandonment of the smoldering tank. Friday morning, the unit opened a massive artillery barrage across the border.

There were no other reports of combat casualties. In northern Kuwait, a helicopter crashed Thursday, killing the four American crewmembers and eight British troops on board.

By taking southern Iraq, the allies would command access to the Gulf and set the stage for the first major conquest on the way to Baghdad - Basra, Iraq's second largest city.

The move on the area between Basra and the Persian Gulf suggested that the allied strategy on the ground calls for a two-pronged attack - one to clear Iraqi resistance in the southern oil region while the other charges north toward Baghdad.

Thursday night, the start of the ground advance into Iraq was signalled by a thunderous artillery barrage by allied forces in northern Kuwait across the border. Infantrymen on the move, their weeks of waiting at an end, cheered as shells screamed overhead.

The armored vehicles of the 1st Marine Division rolled across the border at around 9 p.m. local time (1 p.m. EST). As they moved through the desert, burning oil wells were visible, spewing black smoke into skies lit by a nearly full moon.

Earlier Thursday, elite British troops were dropped by Chinook and Sea Stallion helicopters to seize oil facilities in the strategic al-Faw peninsula - Iraq's access point to the Persian Gulf and the site of major oil facilities.

British military officials said they hoped to seize the key port of Umm Qasr, about 20 miles south of Basra.

Through the night and as the sun rose, artillery barrages targeted Iraqi positions in al-Faw, and witnesses in northern Kuwait side said they could hear thunderous explosions from the Umm Qasr area.

Forces continued to mass near the border in northern Kuwait in the morning Friday, preparing to follow into Iraq. The 101st Airborne Division's 3rd Brigade pulled up to a tactical staging area.

"We're poised to do what the 101st does best, air assault," the brigade's commander, Col. Michael Linnington, said.

Conditions were sometimes difficult. The Marines drove through thick, swirling dust storms. Troops detected Iraqi tanks and armored vehicles hidden behind sand berms by the heat they gave off, and U.S. aircraft attacked the positions.

None of the forces apparently encountered chemical or biological weapons. The Marines passed burning oil wells, though it was not known who had set them afire. Flames shot up hundreds of feet, thickening the air with black smoke.

The attack came at the end of a day that began with allied troops at the other end of the gun barrel, as Iraq - responding to the American bombardment of Baghdad and other targets - launched missiles into Kuwait.

The Iraqi military claimed in a statement it had repulsed an "enemy" attack at Al-Anbar province, on Iraq's border with Jordan and Saudi Arabia. It was not clear what force could be attacking from that point, and the statement did not mention attacks in the south.

In the opening barrage Thursday, the 3rd Infantry Division's artillery opened fire on Iraq with Paladin self-propelled howitzers and multiple launch rocket systems. More than 100 artillery shells were fired toward southern Iraq in a five-minute barrage. White light glowed in the sky above the cannons, as explosions were heard from Iraq.

Earlier in the day, the waiting troops had their first brush with action when Iraq fired missiles into Kuwait. There were cries of "gas, gas, gas," and U.S. troops ran for their protective suits and gas masks - but authorities said none of the missiles carried biological or chemical payloads.

Soldiers of A Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment were eating lunch when an Iraqi missile hit the desert. They wore the masks for 20 minutes until given the all-clear.

After removing his mask, the company commander, Capt. Chris Carter of Watkinsville, Ga., said: "Saddam is a fool."

"I think it's an obvious attempt by Saddam Hussein to demoralize the army and the American public," Carter said. "An attempt that has been a miserable failure. He's probably got the guys more ready to fight than ever."

Some Marines were simply excited to begin fighting, something they had trained to do for years, and occasional screams of "Let's get it on!" came from some of their weapons holes.

WASHINGTON - U.S. intelligence officials are confident a cruise missile attack at dawn Thursday killed several members of Saddam Hussein's inner circle, perhaps including one of his sons, but that Saddam himself is still alive, according to intelligence sources.

They said they believe Saddam's son Qusai, who was recently placed in charge of the defense of the Baghdad and Tikrit region, as well as one of Saddam's most trusted lieutenants, Izzat Ibrahim, may have been among those killed when cruise missiles hit a residential compound in the opening salvo of the war.

One of the sources said a clandestine U.S. team eyeballed the compound after the strike and concluded "no one came out of the rubble" alive.

An administration official familiar with the CIA's reporting on the episode said Thursday that the agency was still analyzing who may have been killed in the attack, and that Qusai "could have been there with other members of the leadership."

But until the United States can confirm who was in the compound, he said, "we just don't know who was killed."

He said the CIA, after reviewing a videotape of Saddam broadcast hours after the attack, was confident Saddam is alive.

One administration official said "there is evidence that he (Saddam) was at least injured" because of indications that medical attention was urgently summoned on his behalf.

The source who said everyone was killed in the compound agreed the CIA has no confirmation on who was killed.

He agreed Qusai was "a candidate" and another apparent victim was Ibrahim, deputy head of the ruling Revolutionary Command Council since Saddam seized power in 1979.

"He was one of the people believed to be in the ... compound," he said. Ibrahim is one of the few members of the inner council to have survived Saddam's frequent purges and also survived an assassination attempt in 1998.

The source said CIA Director George Tenet is confident "real damage" was done to Saddam's inner circle in the missile strike in part because U.S. military forces are not picking up "command and control traffic" from Baghdad.

"The nature of the resistance (from Iraqi troops) so far seems to be unorganized and unorchestrated," he said. "We have not received real resistance at all."

Nevertheless, he said, the entire leadership was not inside the compound and "there clearly is some kind of government still there."

The sources said the decision to attack the compound was made several hours before the strike when a CIA team inside Baghdad intercepted Iraqi communications indicating high officials, perhaps including Saddam, were planning to stay there overnight.

There have been several tactical teams run by the CIA inside Iraq for a number of months.

While more than three dozen Tomahawk cruise missiles were launched at dawn Thursday against three targets in and around Baghdad, the compound was the only target believed to have sheltered members of Iraq's ruling elite.

The death of Qusai and Ibrahim would be major blows to Saddam. Qusai, 35, is believed to be his favorite son and supervises the Republican Guards, Iraq's best-trained and equipped troops. Observers have said Saddam has been grooming Qusai to succeed him.

Ibrahim's daughter is married to Saddam's eldest son, Odai, who is known to be less stable and to have been given less responsibility than his brother.

Ibrahim, 60, presided over special tribunals that handed down death sentences against Saddam's opponents.

U.S. Marines under British command took at least 250 Iraqi prisoners on Friday as they advanced into the outskirts of the important southern port of Umm Qasr, a British commander said.
Colonel Steve Cox told Reuters on board the British flagship Ark Royal in the Gulf that the Iraqi troops had surrendered to the U.S. 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit by noon.

Reuters correspondent Adrian Croft, who is with 15 MEU, said the marines raised the Stars and Stripes over Umm Qasr's new port around noon but had yet to take the new <- moet old zijn port, about a mile away.

Umm Qasr, close to the second city of Basra, is Iraq's main port for cargo and its capture would give the British-led brigade control of virtually all access to Iraq by sea.

Het Britse parlementslid Tony Banks heeft er bij de geallieerde strijdmacht die tegen Saddam Hussein optrekt op aangedrongen de dierentuin in Bagdad te ontzien. De dierentuin El-Zawra ligt midden in de stad, dichtbij presidentiële en militaire gebouwen die in de eerste twee nachten van de oorlog met kruisraketten zijn bestookt.

Banks, die lid is van de Labourpartij, diende in het Lagerhuis een motie in waarin hij zegt blij te zijn dat de Amerikaanse en Britse regering hebben gezegd dat burgers zoveel mogelijk zullen worden ontzien. Maar hij vraagt de regeringen ook aan de dieren te denken. In een oorlog worden altijd veel dieren gedood of verwond, zei Banks. Hij vroeg de geallieerden daarom ervoor te zorgen dat de dierentuin wordt gespaard en dat na afloop van de oorlog militaire dierenartsen noodhulp verlenen waar dat nodig is.

Banks is vorig jaar betrokken geweest bij een campagne om de - intussen overleden - eenogige leeuw Marjan in de dierentuin van Kabul te redden.

Speculaties over Saddam houden aan 21-03-03

De speculaties over het lot van Saddam Hussein houden aan. Zo verklaarde de Iraakse minister al-Sahaf van Informatie dat één van Saddam Husseins paleizen weliswaar is geraakt door Amerikaanse raketten, maar dat Saddam ''gezond en veilig'' is. Volgens de krant Washington Post zou Saddam echter al bij de eerste aanvallen gewond zijn geraakt.

De krant baseert zich op een anonieme regeringsfunctionaris in Washington. Volgens de functionaris werd kort na de bombardementen met spoed om medicijnen voor Saddam gevraagd.

De Amerikaanse regering heeft het bericht niet bevestigd, maar heeft wel gezegd dat Saddam het doelwit van de bombardementen is geweest. Saddam zou in het zuiden van Bagdad een bijeenkomst met Iraakse leiders hebben bezocht.

Kort na het begin van de eerste bombardementen donderdagochtend verscheen Saddam op de Iraakse televisie. De CIA zegt dat uit een analyse van de toespraak blijkt dat het waarschijnlijk de stem van Saddam is, maar dat het onduidelijk is wanneer de opname is gemaakt.

Hiermee blijft het de vraag of Saddam op het moment van uitzending al dan niet gewond is geraakt. Ook wordt door sommigen betwijfeld of het wel de echte Saddam was, aangezien bekend is dat de Iraakse leider dubbelgangers inzet.

Op de persconferentie sprak al-Sahaf berichten tegen dat de havenstad Umm Qasr gevallen is. Om zijn woorden kracht bij te zetten zwaaide de in militair tenue gestoken minister met een machinegeweer.

Ook ontkende al-Sahaf dat soldaten zich hebben overgegeven aan de geallieerde troepen. ''De mannen die u op die beelden zag, waren geen soldaten'', aldus de Iraakse minister. Strijdlustig voegde hij eraan toe dat de Britten en de Amerikanen Irak niet levend zullen verlaten.

Geallieerden rukken op in Zuid-Irak 21-03-03

Amerikaanse en Britse troepen hebben vandaag flinke progressie geboekt bij hun opmars in het zuiden van Irak. De grondoorlog werd gisteravond ingezet, onder dekking van de duisternis en vanuit de lucht gesteund door helikopters en vliegtuigen. Het massale offensief laat echter nog op zich wachten.

De eerste Amerikaanse militair is inmiddels bij de gevechtshandelingen omgekomen. Hij maakte deel uit van de grondtroepen die op weg zijn naar de olievelden van Rumeila in Zuid-Irak.

De belangrijke havenstad Umm Qasr, in het zuidelijkste puntje van Irak, is deels in handen van de geallieerden. De Irakezen hebben de nieuwe haven al prijs moeten geven en momenteel wordt slag geleverd om de 1,5 kilometer verderop gelegen oude haven. De Iraakse strijdkrachten leveren bij de Umm Qasr flinke tegenstand. Elders zou nauwelijks verzet geboden worden. Umm Qasr ligt op 50 kilometer van Basra, na Bagdad de grootste stad van het land.

Behalve de nieuwe haven van Umm Qasar hebben Britse infanteristen het Iraakse schiereiland Al-Faw ingenomen. Hiermee controleren de Amerikanen en Britten de korte kustlijn van Irak. De Britse minister van Defensie Hoon meldde dat circa 250 Iraakse militairen krijgsgevangen zijn gemaakt.

Basra is volgens de laatste berichten omsingeld door geallieerde troepen.
Verscheidene persbureaus hebben vanmorgen enorme explosies in de buurt van het centrum van de Iraakse olie-industrie. Bij de stad staan dertig oliebronnen in brand. De geallieerden en journalisten gaan ervan uit dat de Irakezen de olie-installaties in brand hebben gestoken.

Voorhoede
Meer westelijk was een voorhoede van het Amerikaanse leger vanochtend al 150 km opgerukt in de richting van Bagdad. De militairen hebben volgens een meereizende journalist geen tegenstand ontmoet en er zouden geen krijgsgevangenen zijn gemaakt. Wel hebben de geallieerden in het westen van Irak een aantal strategisch belangrijke vliegvelden ingenomen. Amerikaanse en Britse militairen hopen binnen drie of vier dagen in de straten van Bagdad te staan. Dat heeft een woordvoerder van het Britse leger gezegd.

Een journalist van het Arabischtalige tv-station al-Jazeera heeft verschillende explosies gemeld in de Noord-Iraakse stad Mosul. Een uur daarvoor was het luchtalarm afgegaan. De afgelopen nacht is Mosul zwaar bestookt door de geallieerden. De oliestad kreeg zeker drie aanvalsgolven te verduren die vooral op de buitenwijken leken gericht. Over de gevolgen van de aanval is nog weinig bekend.

Kirkuk
Volgens onbevestigde berichten hebben Amerikaanse militairen de olievelden bij Kirkuk ingenomen. Kirkuk is strategisch van groot belang voor het noordelijke front, allereerst voor de geallieerde opmars naar Bagdad; Kirkuk ligt op de noordelijke route naar de Irakese hoofdstad.

Ook kunnen de Amerikanen door een snelle verovering van de noordelijke olievelden voorkomen dat de Irakezen deze in brand steken. De inname van Kirkuk zou een opsteker zijn voor het moreel.

Omdat geallieerde vliegtuigen nog steeds niet door het Turkse luchtruim mogen vliegen als gevolg van gekissebis tussen Turkije en de VS over de voorwaarden daarvan, blijven bombardementen vooralsnog uit.

Grote aanval blijft nog uit
Wel zijn vanmorgen vijf B52-bommenwerpers opgestegen van een militaire luchtmachtbasis in Engeland. Het Britse ministerie van Defensie wilde niet bevestigen of de bommenwerpers op weg zijn naar de Golf.

De oorlog is nu ruim anderhalve dag aan de gang, maar de grote aanval lijkt nog steeds niet begonnen. Het Amerikaanse opperbevel heeft voor de oorlog steeds gezegd dat er een gigantische luchtaanval zou komen om het Iraakse leger totaal te demoraliseren.

En dat het zo overdreven wordt uitgemeten dat er 1 dode in de gevechten is gevallen................bedenk eens hoeveel Amerika er wel niet gedood heeft aan Irakeze zijde .

TOKYO - U.S. President George W. Bush expressed his gratitude for Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's "courage and friendship" in supporting the war on Iraq during a telephone call Friday.
In a 10-minute conversation, Bush said he is "always moved" by Koizumi's firm support for Washington and that he highly values Japan's package of humanitarian aid measures announced immediately after the war began.

The Foreign Ministry also quoted Bush as saying the military operations in Iraq have been "going well." The president added that he believes the U.S-led forces will win with a minimum of innocent casualties.

Bush's word of thanks have great importance for Koizumi, who has suffered a public bashing over his siding with Washington. Opinion polls show 80 percent of the public opposes the war on Iraq.

Koizumi told Bush that the United States is a true ally and friend, and that Japan also wants to remain a "trustworthy" ally of the U.S.

The prime minister discussed Japan's financial and humanitarian aid package for nations neighboring Iraq and its plan for postwar reconstruction of Iraq, including removal of sea mines and weapons of mass destruction.

In a sign of high U.S. expectation of Japan's financial involvement in rebuilding Iraq, Bush said the Untied States "wants to cooperate with Japan" in Iraq's reconstruction.

Senior Vice Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi revealed in the morning that Bush had wanted to call Koizumi personally to give him advance notice of the attack, because Japan is on Bush's list of countries that he would call.

But since the attack began "hastily," the president had Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage call instead, Motegi said at the Foreign Ministry.

Some Japanese media suggested Japan was treated lightly because it received notice only a few minutes before the attack began Thursday, and because the call was not placed by the president himself.

Groot-Brittannië heeft vrijdag kritiek geuit op het Amerikaanse leger omdat soldaten na de verovering van een plaats in Irak de Amerikaanse vlag zouden hebben gehesen.

De Britse minister van defensie Geoff Hoon heeft gezegd met de VS te zullen overleggen over het incident. Het lijkt me uiterst ongelukkig als na de gevechten om Bagdad de vlag bijvoorbeeld op het Iraakse parlement wordt geplant, aldus Hoon.

Britse commandanten hebben hun soldaten opdracht gegeven geen vlaggen te hijsen na gewonnen slagen. We zijn hier om Irak te bevrijden, niet om het te veroveren, aldus kolonel Tim Collins.

Nederland en Frankrijk zetten Iraakse diplomaten niet uit 21-03-2003

De Nederlandse regering heeft het verzoek van de Verenigde Staten om alle Iraakse diplomaten het land uit te zetten naast zich neergelegd. Dat heeft het ministerie van buitenlandse zaken vrijdag bekendgemaakt.

Wel worden Iraakse diplomaten in de gaten gehouden, aldus Bart Jochems, woordvoerder van buitenlandse zaken. Zolang de diplomaten zich aan de regels houden zullen ze echter niet worden aangehouden of uitgezet.

Nederland behoort volgens de VS tot de dertig landen die de Amerikaans-Britse oorlog tegen Irak steunen, maar de Nederlandse regering heeft gezegd dat dat zich beperkt tot het verlenen politieke steun.

Ook Frankrijk heeft vrijdag gezegd geen Iraakse diplomaten uit te zullen wijzen. Een woordvoerder van het ministerie van buitenlandse zaken zei dat het uitwijzen van diplomatieke vertegenwoordigers een soevereiniteitsvraagstuk is en geen aangelegenheid van de VS.

De Amerikaanse regering stelt dat Iraakse diplomaten vertegenwoordigers van een corrupt en meedogenloos regime zijn die geen diplomatieke status verdienen. Ook zou een aantal van hen betrokken zijn bij de organisatie van terreuracties in antwoord op de oorlog tegen Irak.

WASHINGTON - In de Iraakse hoofdstad Bagdad zijn de geallieerde troepen vrijdagavond met zware bombardementen begonnen. Volgens de Amerikaanse televisiezender CNN zou Irak het doelwit zijn van 3000 raketten, die in de loop van de avond worden afgevuurd.

De operatie wordt in het Pentagon 'A-Day' genoemd en zij is bedoeld om met een enorme klap het Iraakse leger tot overgave te dwingen. Volgens CNN hebben Amerikaanse defensiefunctionarissen gezegd dat er nu al complete verwarring en chaos is binnen het Iraakse leger.

Een Russisch telecombedrijf laat iedereen die telefonische scheldkannonades wil afvuren op Bush, gratis naar het Witte huis bellen. Het bedrijf, Excom, zal voor de telefoontjes geen kosten in rekening brengen.

Al bijna 1000 bellers zouden al van de gelegenheid gebruik hebben gemaakt om het Witte Huis te laten weten wat ze van de oorlog vinden. Volgens Pressetext zouden de telefoongesprekken tussen de twee en twintig minuten duren, naar het nummer **********.

Een telefoonoperator laat weten dat sommige Russische mannen om de tien minuten bellen en eisen dat ze Bush direct aan de lijn krijgen.

Wie zomaar het Witte Huis belt en begint te schelden of bedreigingen uit, kan in Nederland de politie op de stoep verwachten. Bedreigingen aan een Amerikaanse president worden niet licht opgevat. Vanochtend werden nog vijf demonstranten gearresteerd omdat ze voor de Amerikaanse ambassade een vlag verbrandden: dat is een belediging van een bevriende staat, zoals omschreven in artikel 118 en 119 van het Wetboek van strafrecht. De maximale straf op belediging van een bevriend staatshoofd is twee jaar gevangenisstraf en een geldboete.

Troops 'take key Iraqi cities'

Basra is the immediate southern objective, correspondents say
US and UK forces have captured the key southern areas of Basra and Nasiriya, officials say.
Huge numbers of troops are continuing their push towards the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, according to BBC correspondents with US and UK forces.

Key oilfields in the south of Iraq have been secured though at least nine oil wells had been set on fire, defence chiefs say.

Coalition forces say thousands of Iraqi soldiers and some commanders have surrendered to them.

But there has been some stiff resistance and fighting in various areas in the south.

IRAQ CAMPAIGN

There have continued to be sporadic explosions in Baghdad after the first night of the all-out air campaign which coalition officials say included more than 1,000 cruise missiles fired and hundreds of bombing missions.

Iraqi officials said three civilians were killed and more than 200 hurt in the air strikes.

A BBC correspondent in Baghdad was told by doctors at a hospital he visited that a young girl and a man were killed in the barrage.

Coalition forces suffered the loss of seven servicemen when two British helicopters collided over international waters in the Gulf in what officials say was an accident.

Pentagon: U.S. soldiers killed or captured

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraqi military forces have captured or killed a group of fewer than 10 U.S. soldiers from an Army maintenance unit, Pentagon officials said Sunday.

The Arabic language, Qatar-based news network Al-Jazeera broadcast a tape Sunday of what appeared to be the bodies of a number of U.S. soldiers, some of them apparently shot in the forehead.

The tape also showed several soldiers identifying themselves and their place of origin. At least two appeared to be wounded.

The process of informing the soldiers' families has begun, officials said.

The soldiers, attached to a maintenance unit in south-central Iraq, went astray and were confronted by Iraqi military, officials said.

President Bush commented on the capture Sunday as he returned to the White House from Camp David.

"I expect them to be treated as POWs," Bush said. "I expect them to be treated humanely."

Richard Myers, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, called the soldiers' appearance a violation of the Geneva Convention.

"This is just one more crime by the Iraqi regime," a grim-faced Myers told reporters at the Pentagon shortly after the capture had been confirmed
