I picked up The Enchanted River after seeing it recommended by a BookTokker, and I’m so glad I did. The story has a slow start, taking time to establish its characters before the plot really unfolds, but the immersive writing and the Scottish isle setting made it easy to sink into the world.
The book frequently mentions ballads being composed or sung for the earth, wind, and other elements, which adds a beautiful folkloric touch. But I found myself wishing the music actually existed. Without lyrics or melodies, those moments felt a little out of reach.
There are multiple romances throughout, all strained by a mysterious border that divides the island, giving the "story a Romeo and Juliet"ish undertone without being a direct retelling.
If you enjoy lyrical worldbuilding, folklore-inspired fantasy, and stories rooted in place and tradition, this is one to check out.
