President Trump zegt dat de VS Iran een voorstel heeft gedaan voor een nucleair verdrag. Onderhandelaars van beide landen praten al enige tijd over zo'n akkoord. De VS hoopt zo te voorkomen dat Iran kernwapens kan maken, Iran wil graag af van de internationale strafmaatregelen die het vanwege zijn nucleaire activiteiten kreeg opgelegd. Die sancties zijn bijzonder schadelijk voor de Iraanse economie.
Trump maakt een rondreis door het Midden-Oosten. Hij sprak aan boord van zijn vliegtuig met journalisten over de onderhandelingen die in Rome en Oman worden gevoerd.
Op de vraag van een journalist of de Amerikaanse onderhandelaar Witkoff de Iraniërs een voorstel heeft gedaan, bevestigde Trump dat. "Maar het belangrijkste is dat ze weten dat ze snel moeten handelen. Anders gaat er iets slechts gebeuren." De Iraanse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Araghchi zei gisteren nog dat zijn land nog geen voorstel van de Amerikanen heeft ontvangen.
Een struikelblok tot dusver is de eis van de VS dat Iran stopt met het verrijken van uranium. Met hoogverrijkt uranium kunnen kernwapens worden gemaakt. Aangenomen wordt dat Iran bijna zo ver is.

Dit soort berichten komen al jaren. Ik ben erg pro-westers (woon er immers zelf) en daarmee ook pro-Israel (matig). Maar de hysterie omtrent een Iran dat potentieel kernwapens kan bouwen, snap ik niet.quote:
