Pre-Weather alert for entire archipelago
The Canary Islands' General Directorate of Emergencies has extended the pre-alert weather warning for rain to cover the entire archipelago from 1:30pm today, Monday 3rd March.

In addition, a higher alert level for rain has been issued for the following municipalities: Arucas, Teror, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Brígida, Valsequillo, and Telde.

The regional government made this decision earlier today based on information from AEMET and other available sources, in accordance with the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena in the Canary Islands (PEFMA).

The forecast indicates a “high likelihood” of locally heavy rain, with snowfall expected on the highest peaks of La Palma and Tenerife. Tuesday's weather is expected to be variable, with most precipitation occurring as showers. Light to moderate rain is predicted, with possible heavy downpours during the middle of the day, particularly on the larger islands.

The heaviest rainfall is expected in the north and east of La Palma, the southeast of Tenerife, and the northeast of Gran Canaria, lasting until nightfall. There is also a possibility of isolated thunderstorms.

The weather outlook is cloudy for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura with light to moderate rain.

Snow transforms Teide into a stunning Winter Wonderland

The DANA weather front passing through the Canary Islands has left Teide National Park looking like a scene from a postcard, with the iconic volcano covered in a blanket of snow.

The Tenerife Cabildo shared several videos yesterday (Monday) showing it completely transformed by snow, offering rare and breathtaking views more reminiscent of polar regions than a typical subtropical landscape.

Due to ice on the roads, all access routes to the Teide National Park remain closed to ensure public safety. The icy conditions have prompted the authorities to advise residents and tourists to avoid attempting to access the area.

In response to the adverse weather conditions, the Cabildo activated the Tenerife Island Emergency Plan (PEIN) at midnight on Sunday. The plan coordinates emergency services and resources to manage the impact of the storm and ensure safety across the island.

The extraordinary snowfall in El Teide is a rare phenomenon, and while it creates stunning views, it also presents significant challenges for local infrastructure and emergency services. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging caution and patience as they work to clear roads and restore safe access to the National Park.

Heavy rain and reservoir burst trigger severe flooding in Telde, Gran Canaria

Heavy rainfall hit Telde, Gran Canaria, on March 3, 2025, triggering severe flooding, road closures, and powerful currents that swept away vehicles, further worsened by a reservoir burst releasing 700 000 liters (185 000 gallons) of water.

Heavy rainfall in Telde, Gran Canaria, on March 3, 2025, triggered severe flooding, road closures, and powerful currents that swept vehicles into ravines.

The situation worsened when a reservoir burst, releasing 700 000 liters (185 000 gallons) of irrigation water, which forced the closure of a major road. Residents of García Ruiz Road were unable to enter or leave the area until midday. Fortunately, emergency services confirmed that no casualties were reported.

In response to the hazardous conditions left by the storm, the Telde City Council announced the closure of multiple beaches on the morning of March 4, including La Garita, Hoya del Pozo, Playa del Hombre, El Barranquillo, Melenara, Salinetas, and Ojos de Garza, citing safety concerns after the heavy downpour.

The Telde City Council has urged residents to avoid travel as emergency response teams work to clear the damage. Several coastal areas and roads remain inaccessible because of waterlogging and landslides.

“This is a security measure to ensure the safety of citizens. After the storm, the beaches are not in a condition to receive users,” María Calderín, head of the Department of Beaches, said.

Municipal workers, in collaboration with the security forces, are actively working to restore the affected areas.

The eastern and northern areas of La Palma, southeastern Tenerife, and northeastern Gran Canaria experienced the most intense precipitation.

Multiple municipalities, including Arucas, Teror, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Santa Brígida, and Valsequillo, also faced disruptions because of the ongoing heavy rains.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), rain and snow will persist in the Canary Islands, albeit with reduced intensity, through March 4. Snow has been accumulating in high-altitude areas in Teide National Park in Tenerife and Roque de Los Muchachos in La Palma. Ice patches have resulted in road closures, including TF-24 between Los Loros and El Portillo, TF-445 from Buenavista to Faro de Teno, and LP-4 to Roque de Los Muchachos.
