Sneeuwstorm op komst voor de VS.

quote:
AccuWeather forecasters say over a foot of snow, strong winds and blizzard conditions are expected for many in the northern Plains to start this week. Later in the week, the storm will shift east yet again, potentially dumping substantial amounts of snow in portions of the Midwest.

The source of this future snow moved onshore in the Pacific states this weekend, bringing heavy rain to coastal California and heavy snow to many inland regions of the Intermountain West. Following a typical storm track, this system will shift eastward into the Plains late Monday and into Tuesday, according to forecasters.

"A potent area of low pressure is set to form over Colorado and Kansas Monday. This will pull moist air northward from the Gulf of Mexico, combining it with bitterly cold air from the polar regions in Canada. With the two put together, a major snowstorm is in the cards from Colorado to Minnesota into midweek," AccuWeather Meteorologist Thomas Geiger explained.

The same storm will also create a severe weather threat across the southern U.S. through midweek.

Extremely dangerous road conditions were blamed for at least 10 deaths across the southern Plains as a multiday winter storm brought rounds of sleet and freezing rain from Oklahoma to Texas and Arkansas. Thousands of flights were canceled, and hundreds of thousands were left without power across several Southern states.

The first round of winter weather made travel difficult across parts of Texas on Monday, but road conditions seriously deteriorated on Tuesday and Wednesday following more rounds of freezing rain and sleet. Emergency responders in Texas were busy this week, responding to the hundreds of accidents that occurred on the icy roadways. At least seven people have died on the slick roads in the Lone Star State since Monday, The Washington Post reported.

One of the deadly accidents was a triple fatality crash on Tuesday near Brownfield, which sits about 40 miles southwest of Lubbock. The vehicle had lost traction while traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 380 and started to skid. It crossed over the median into the westbound lane and rolled into a ditch, according to Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. A fourth passenger in the car was injured in the crash.

It’s been a week of howling wind and bitter cold in California as winter storms have dropped into the region from the far north. The cold air set the stage for snow at unusually low elevations late in the week. Now, it is combining with an atmospheric river to bring blizzard conditions and possibly unprecedented snowfall to Southern California.

The latest powerful storm, steered by a low-pressure system rotating off the California coast, is taking direct aim at the coastal mountain ranges that run between Santa Barbara and San Diego counties. An atmospheric river could linger over the region for more than 24 hours into Saturday, piling up feet of mountain snow while dousing lower elevations with flooding rains.

The region rarely experiences snow of this magnitude, which is more typical of the Sierra Nevada, according to Alex Tardy, the warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Diego.

California battles record-breaking snow and rain

quote:
A significant storm over the last several days created many impacts across California, causing some cities to flood, and higher elevations to record several feet of snow.

More than 7 inches of rain fell in Ventura County, causing flash flooding early Saturday morning according to The Associated Press. The excess rain caused roads to flood, which stranded cars on roadways. On Saturday morning, the Los Angeles Fire Department ground and air responders rescued four people and five animals from flooding in Encino. Two of the individuals were suffering from hypothermia and were transported to an area hospital. The other individuals and the five animals were all uninjured.

Air travel was halted for a majority of Southern California when a ground stop was issued for Los Angeles International Airport, impacting all departing and arriving flights on Friday. A number of inbound flights during the stop were diverted to Ontario International Airport, approximately 55 miles east, according to ABC7 journalist Brittany Silverstein. The stop expired around 1 a.m. PST Saturday morning.

Power outages across the state surpassed 100,000 on both Friday and Saturday morning, with the highest amount of outages Saturdya coming from Los Angeles County, where 26,770 outages were reported.

Flooding also impacted many roads across the state, including Interstate 5 which was closed in several spots on Saturday morning due to flooding and icy roads.

On Friday afternoon, Extreme Meteorologist Reed Timmer was in the mountains near Pasadena, California, and witnessed water gushing off the mountains and flowing toward the Los Angeles area. Timmer was standing near an area that is usually dry but was transformed into a raging river following several inches of rain in less than 24 hours.

"Every single one of these washes are flooded out. These are normally dry," Timmer said.

The official rain gauge in downtown Los Angeles were filled with 2.29 inches of rain on Friday, making it the wettest February day since Feb. 12, 2003, when 2.45 inches fell. The single-day rainfall was also orders of magnitude greater than the total rainfall from the past three Februarys, which combined for only 0.10 of an inch of rain.

Powerful winter storm hits U.S., leaving at least 13 people dead and over 3 million without power, U.S.

A powerful winter storm swept across the U.S. over the past couple of days, causing death and destruction in multiple states. At least 13 people lost their lives as severe weather, high winds, and flooding hit the South and Midwest. At the same time, winter-weary Northeast and Midwest residents were digging out from heavy snowfall. Thousands of businesses closed, flights were canceled, and more than 1.2 million customers — or approximately 3 million people, were left without power.

The latest NWS forecast warns of hazardous road conditions due to snow and ice, as well as an elevated risk of fire in the Southern High Plains. Coastal rain and higher-elevation snow are expected in California and the Pacific Northwest, while multiple low pressure areas will move across the U.S. through Tuesday.
Three people in Alabama, two in Tennessee, and one each in Mississippi, Arkansas, and California lost their lives due to the storm, while five weather-related deaths were reported in Kentucky.

Heavy snowfall in the Northeast and upper Midwest caused travel disruption, with hundreds of businesses closed and many flights canceled. The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of possible coastal flooding in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with some areas of New Hampshire and Maine forecast to see as much as 45 cm (18 inches) of snow, accompanied by strong winds that could cause power outages. Utility customers in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Michigan were still without power as of Saturday afternoon, March 4, 2023.

In the upper Midwest, Detroit’s Metropolitan Wayne County Airport was briefly closed due to heavy snowfall, while some areas experienced blizzard conditions with snowfall approaching 7.6 cm (3 inches) per hour. The storm knocked out power to more than 130 000 customers in Michigan, causing further misery for residents who had already been without electricity for up to seven days due to ice storms the previous week.

Meanwhile, residents of California were also hit by the storm earlier in the week, with some stranded in their homes due to up to 3 m (10 feet) of snow.

In the Southern US, Alabama, Louisiana, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Texas suffered the most damage. Tornadoes reportedly caused damage to homes and businesses, and at least four people were killed by falling trees. Winds of nearly 130 km/h (80 mph) were recorded in the Fort Worth suburb of Blue Mound, Texas, with the roof of an apartment building in Hurst blown away. In southwest Arkansas, a couple was temporarily trapped in the bathroom of their mobile home while a tornado passed through, causing major damage.
