Ok I got my Freeloader today and am extremely disappointed that it doesn't work like Datel says it will. I bought 5 import games and they all have various issues with them. I'm using the official RGB Scart lead for the NGC, and my TV can display 60hz.
Firstly there are 3 fairly similiar boot methods to boot up the Freeloader.
The first method invloves a direct boot for the Freeloader from power on of the Gamecube, taking the disc out on prompt when it loads, and inserting the import game.Second method involves inserting the Freeloader disc after you switch the GC on, waiting for it to read it, then going into the Gameplay option in the GC menu and switching discs from there.
Third method involves booting the Freeloader like normal, when it boots up, you press Z on the controller to select the region of the disc you want to play (you can select from three flags (USA, Japanese and Austrailia). This method seems to be the most successful for me. Depending on which one I chose, I had varying degrees of success. Here are my results.
Resident Evil Zero (USA) -
This game has the biggest problem making it impossible to play currently. It will only run using the third boot method. When this game boots up after using the Freeloader, it is extremely slow and choppy, sound is messed up making it totally unplayable.Metroid Prime (USA)
This game has various issues but is now perfectly playable for me. If I boot this game using boot methods 1 or 2 it will run, but the titles screen is completely blank with just the text and a black background. If you continue and start the game, it will be very choppy when you move Samus around. The screen moves very jerkily. Even though its playable like this, its not really recommended. Its like its trying to play it in 50hz, when the game wasnt designed to,be played like this. hence the strange choppiness.
Now when I first used boot method 3 on it, the game would load up, even having the full titles screen, but there would be one BIG problem. The colours of the game would be messed up completely, i.e. yellow is blue etc. However, (and this has completely baffled me) when I run the game using method 3 now, it runs perfectly, at 60hz with the right colours. I dont know why its suddenly started working with method 3. This just makes things more confusing.Skies of Arcadia Legends (USA)
Game runs fine using method 3. Have yet to try the other two methods.Super Monkey Ball 2
Only runs using method 3. Will not load at all using the other two methods. Also game crashed once when I was playing it.Animal Crossing
Again, only works using method 3.
So it seems there are lots of problems with this Freeloader. Other people might have different experiences with these same games, but I am disappointed by it as I spent approx £150 on the import games, and I can't even play one of them. The problems also seem to be rather random which makes things even worse. Didn't Datel even test this properly? It's not like the games I tried are obscure and hard to find.

Stuk van IGN over "Enter the Matrix, The Game" ![]()
quote:ISS3 voor de Cube (waar blijft PES?)
February 05, 2003 - Last night IGN's own Doug Perry went hands on with the various different home console and PC versions of Enter the Matrix. Below, his impressions:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------At the biggest-ever cross industry event the world has ever seen, Infogrames/Atari connected with Warner Brother Studios to debut the first footage of The Matrix. By ushering in the most intense collaborative effort between film and game makers, the Wachowski Brothers created a film, a videogame (via Shiny Entertainment), and a series of CG animes (or "animatrix" shorts) that all tie in together to tell the newest chapters of The Matrix, the first of which premiered tonight.
On the Warner Brothers lot 8, at the Steven J. Ross Theater, the press, celebrities including Marilyn Manson, Will Smith and Laurence Fishburne as well as numerous Hollywood industry executives watched CG footage (with help from Square, no less) of the first animatrix film, followed by a collage of footage from the game, and then finally stage appearances by the major actors from the game, including Jada Pinkett Smith who play the character Niobe in the upcoming movie and game.
After the premiere showing, we were whisked off to another close-by Warner Brothers' warehouse where the party began. In between ogling some of the finest females of the land and gnawing on chicken wings we got to grips with the game itself in PS2, Xbox, PC and GameCube forms. Showable at the event were four playable levels, two action-fighting missions, a ride in a hovercraft in the underground canals, and a car chase scenario. The game is reaching fruition differently than most movie-based videogames. Here, the game stars two minor players from the movie, Ghost and Niobe, rather than the two major stars Neo and Trinity. It's as if you took short clips of time from the movie and expanded on them to such an extent that you could fill a game, which is mostly what Shiny has done. The game, however, ties in to everything involved in the movie. Using a combination of Kung Fu moves, stealth, hi-level acrobatics and gunplay, players will get to the bottom of the story as they switch off between playing Ghost and Niobe.
Shown from a third-person perspective and using a tight, panhandle camera to follow the characters around, Enter The Matrix enables players to follow a simple navigational arrow at the screen's top to progress. Mixing narrow hallways, balconies and large, arena-like rooms, Shiny incorporates enemy fights with a slew of evil ruffians perfectly capable of countering your Kung Fu moves. On the PS2, the buttons are mapped out quite well. Players use triangle to punch, circle to kick and square to grapple an opponent. R1 enables players to wrestle a weapon away from an opponent, which then can be used to kill him and any other enemies in the room. R1 also aims and targets enemies while in combat. Players can use L1 to use their focus meter, to enter into Bullet Time. At this point, we're not sure how configurable the controls are, given the game's still relatively early form.
Meet Niobe
Perhaps what is most interesting is the path Shiny has chosen for combat. Characters auto-target nearby enemies, and by using simplistic button pushes, players can perform some very impressive-looking moves upon their enemies. By simply pressing the punch buttons, my character was somehow able to deliver a slew of killer moves that burst out on their own, with nothing to do with the way I moved the D-pad or anything. It's real simple stuff at this point, folks. Press kick repeatedly and without any skill involved, a flurry of stunning kicks come blazing out. Using grappling is more interesting, still. The enemies seemed to counter more often with this move, returning the pain with more ease. Mixing up the punch, kick and grapple buttons is even more intriguing. By diversifying your attack order, the enemy is more like to succumb to a grapple, which can be countered during a closely balanced match.
But think of it. These moves are not key framed nor hand animated. All of the characters in this game are motion captured. Moves such as walking, strafing, running, jumping and all of their fighting moves are created by the often mechanical process known as motion capture. At first glance, the game's stiff mo-capped fighting moves recall the high-strung characters of Mortal Kombat. Enter The Matrix does share a wee bit of that same look and feel, though even at this relatively early stage in development, it's far better captured and produced than any of the old Mortal Kombat games.
The result of this extensive and expensive motion capture work, however, provides gamers with a powerful cocktail of visual experiences. While the initial stiffness of the Mortal Kombat-like moves slowly mellowed in my brain, what became most impressive as I watched the characters is the range of their motions. There is a depth to their moves and even, to a certain extent, a gracefulness in the human motions themselves. And it's all in full 3D. When Niobe or Ghost punches or kicks, the whole motion is captured, and though there's a slight mechanical feel to it, the fluidity of the actual mo-capped motion has been fully realized in videogame form. Some of the moves are incredibly graceful. When you pull off a straight-fingered poke to the enemy and follow it with a grapple, which slings the opponent across your leg and sprawling onto the ground, it's stylish looking and satisfying. Makes you feel like you really are playing the movie.Likewise, the Matrix-centric use of Bullet Time is not only here in the game, the moves are incorporated into the gameplay. There are a few ways to use Bullet Time: One is by using the wall to pull off a straight backflip, Jackie Chan-style; while the other is to run along the wall to avoid or attack an enemy. By grappling an enemy with a gun, you can acquire the weapon, and then by pressing L1 and jumping near a wall while running nearly parallel to it, you can jump and run along the wall while shooting at enemy -- just like in the movie. It sounds a little complicated, but it's actually simple.
The two other levels shown were neat too. In the driving mode, players can drive, pulling e-brake induced powerslides, and if necessary, your co-pilot can climb halfway out the side window and mow down oncoming enemies via a powerful machine gun. In one level, you must cross a bridge to reach your destination but it's up for several minutes. Meanwhile a horde of cops comes blasting onto the screen and you must gun them down -- and survive their onslaught -- until the bridge lowers. The other level, which was early and thus not terribly polished just yet, was the underground tunnel-shooter level. Piloting a hovercraft much like the one Morpheus created, you must escape the wyrms by means of careful navigation and fine shooting. Thankfully, a set of powerful machine gunners man your ship for quick fire attacks.
Visually, the best of the games on display was the PS2 version. To be fair, it's because the PS2 version is the base code for all of the other versions, meaning it's farthest along. While many of the environments were destructible, they were also quite spare and empty. Clearly, much of the game's highest quality graphics have been put on the characters themselves. They texture work on the character's faces is just short of incredible. They look very realistic, very compelling. Case in point is the side-by-side comparison of Niobe's images, the actual versus the videogame shot (shown above). Additionally, a good amount of work is being focused on the motion capture, as I've said. But little things like the character's naturally flowing trench coats are notable. Shiny is aiming to get the game run at a brisk 60 FPS, though it wasn't running that fast at the event. We're told the final game will run at 60 FPS most of the time. A fair enough assessment. There is a ton more to say about Enter The Matrix and we'll have more extensive coverage very, very soon, just as soon as this journalist finds a few more hours of shuteye. In the meantime, ogle at these shots and think positive thoughts. Shiny's game has shown a potentially respectable combat engine that incorporates Bullet-Time and wall-running attacks into its core play. Graphically, this early build (the game ships in May) is relatively clean, with especially impressive facial and body textures and sharp looking character models. One other production footnote worth relaying: We're told that during the course of the filming of the movie, all of the actors spent considerable time shooting footage exclusively for the game, which totals about an hour of exclusive material altogether. This extra footage is sure to bring about a rare story element few movie-based videogames can boast, but more than that, the footage is sure to drive and deepen the story. That's got to be a good thing.
In the end, Enter The Matrix looks to offer gamers some of the most impressive production values seen in a videogame-movie collaboration ever. The game, however, looks to be mostly aimed at casual gamers and diehard fans of the movie. If Shiny can pull this off, it'll be one of the biggest success stories in a long while. If not, chalk up another strike for the folks that gave you Earthworm Jim so long ago.

International Superstar Soccer 3 confirmed for March release
Konami of Europe returns to the football field with Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka, Inc (KCEO)'s International Superstar Soccer 3 (ISS3) running out for PlayStation 2 in March, with a version for the Nintendo GameCube following in May.
Designed as a companion title for Konami's world-renowned Pro Evolution Soccer series, ISS3 is a more arcade-orientated game than its stable-mate. Featuring a full selection of volleys, passes, flick-ons and rasping shots, ISS3 pits more than 90 FIFPro-endorsed international and club squads against each other in a variety of friendly and tournament matches. ISS3 also breaks new ground with the inclusion of a 'Mission Mode' wherein victorious players are awarded points after every match or by betting on the outcome of a two-player game, which can be used to build stadiums and unlock a wealth of special options and features.
ISS3 also extends this innovative approach to its on-field play, with KCE Osaka debuting an all-new 'Close-Up' mode. During the course of a match, an icon will flash above the head of a player as he nears the edge of the opposition's penalty area. On pressing L1, the game seamlessly zooms in on the attacking player, changing the view to directly behind him and giving the user more control over his actions. By holding down the R2 button on the controller, feints, spins and skill moves can be used as ISS3 players attempt to beat defenders in their way, while the 'Mission Mode' also holds the key to a number of additional tricks and moves.
The true beauty of ISS3, however, is its ability to grow with the player. While the controls are designed to introduce novice fans to the football genre, the intuitive use of passes, through-balls and first-time shots means that precision one-touch play is also possible, while the individual stats attributed to each of the instantly recognisable football stars can also be used to the player's advantage.
The game also benefits from the most detailed visuals in an ISS title to date. KCE Osaka has ensured that the sport's most famous names are instantly recognisable both in terms of appearance and trademark moves, with key players particularly adept as free kicks, while others enjoy enviable distribution skills and can make seemingly impossible defence-splitting passes with ease.
With its four-player mode, professional commentary and stadium announcements, ISS3 is the most accessible yet entertaining arcade football title to date. Its deft moves, intelligent player AI and incredible visuals and sound combine to create a truly immersive and always entertaining football title guaranteed to leave its rivals trailing in its wake.
ISS3 will be released for PlayStation 2 in March, and GameCube in May.

February 20, 2003A lot of people are skeptical about this title, and a lot of people are quick to call it an "F-Zero" rip-off. The truth? The team that developed "F-Zero: Maximum Velocity" are the guys behind this title. The action is as fast and smooth as you would expect it to be, and here's something interesting: The tracks are (guess what?) tubes! Which means you have a pretty extreme amount of stunts and manuevers you can pull off all while racing in beautiful, futuristic environments. The four-player split-screen mode is most definately a godsend, more games should feature that option. All you guys that have been drooling over the upcoming F-Zero should take a look at this game... you won't be disappointed.

Although no official announcement has been made as of yet, every day more and more titles appear on Nintendo's own "game list". Some of the titles warrant no particular notice, but every now and again you come across something grand. Wether it be the announced "Metroid Prime 2" or "The Sims" games, no game ever appears on the official list for the heck of it."Return to Castle Wolfenstein" appears now on the Nintendo of America games list. Developed by Activision, the game doesn't appear to support a multiplayer mode at this time, however so early on in development (and considering Activision's track record at including multiplayer in Gamecube games), this might change as the weeks go by. "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" was one of the biggest sellers on the PC, and one that console gamers have been drooling over about as much as "Doom III".
The latest out of the Sega Camp is "Phantasy Star Online Card Battle". Again, this early on in development, there's no telling what exactly the game is. It could be a sequel to "Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1 and 2", or it could just be the latest conformity to the card battle craze. One thing's for sure, it's not a Dreamcast port anymore, so look for some amazing visuals from the Sonic Team this time around optimized for the Nintendo Gamecube.
More news as it comes, until then... stick with Nintendo Fire for the latest news and updates.
