Ik heb wel 10 minuten naar dat scherm lopen staren.

Save points out the wazoo, grossly overpowered superweapons, god mode--I tell ya, these kids today have it easy. Take a game like Final Fantasy X. I thoroughly enjoyed the game, but it was just too easy. There's a save sphere every third screen! Died fighting Yunalesca? No problem, you saved outside her chamber. As if the save spheres weren't enough, by the end of the game you could end most fights in about two minutes. The most powerful spells in the game could cost you a mere one MP, and if Tidus gets quick hit as an ability, Jecht will fall to your might like a rotted pine to a lumberjack. And then, in the last "battle," it's impossible to lose! Compare that to the first Final Fantasy game. I got killed by a wolf. A lowly wolf.Stu Moody, Gamespot editor

A coworker asked me if maybe I'd gotten better at games over the years. No, I don't think it's that I'm better. It's just that the games are easier.
quote:
Are Games Too Easy Today? When was the last time you were really challenged by a game? Honestly, how many games do you feel present a near-insurmountable challenge? I think there's a distinct lack of difficulty in many of the games being released today.
"But Stu," you say, "what about games like Contra: Shattered Soldier? Or Hitman 2: Silent Assassin? On their highest difficulty settings, they present a hell of a challenge." Very true, but chew on this: At the software store I work at (I'm not naming names, but rearrange "GameSpot" and you'll figure it out), I get the oh-so-delightful chance to interact with the gaming public. In so doing, I've had Contra returned by the truckload because people were too frustrated with it. And when I ask customers about how they're liking Hitman 2--one of my personal favorites--people tell me they've just given up.
Given up? What kind of an attitude is that?! Yeah, I died 400 times trying to beat Contra on the easiest difficulty. But did I slam my controller against the wall? Hell no! I loved it. I came back for more and got my butt handed to me on normal mode. Yeah, the guards could see through my disguise about 99 percent of the time in Hitman 2, but I kept coming back in that game, too, dressed as a dinner guest or maybe a firefighter. That's gaming right there--gaming like it used to be.
Back on the NES, there were games that were ridiculously difficult. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! is a great example. You're going along, loving the game like you should, having a few problems but not to the point of frustration, and then you get to Mr. Sandman. Sandman gives you one frame of animation to dodge his triple uppercut attack. Is that fair? Of course not. But you're a dedicated individual, so you fight him over and over, and eventually you figure him out and you get the victory. You're elated, but elation turns to deflation when you realize you've got to take on Super Macho Man. Mr. Sandman was like Glass Joe compared to Macho Man. Quickly you realize you're in over your head as Macho Man executes a single "around the world" punch and takes away half of your life. And if that weren't bad enough, as soon as he gets up from his first knockdown, he's going to do an untold number of consecutive "around the world" punches, all of which can put you on the canvas if any should connect. "Man, this guy's impossible," you think to yourself. But, oh no, after a little practice you can polish off Macho Man and advance. After practically peeing your pants in happiness, you then cringe in fear as Kid Dynamite himself squares off with you. One single punch during the first minute and a half of that fight will knock you down. Conceivably, the fight could really be only three punches long, since Tyson goes from standing still to punching you in the face in about .00001 seconds.
I remember those moments like they were yesterday. It might be because I beat that game again yesterday, but nonetheless they are still very fond memories. Not like today's memories. Save points out the wazoo, grossly overpowered superweapons, god mode--I tell ya, these kids have it easy. A lowly wolf.
There's certainly a difference between "challenging" and "completely unfair." Dead to Rights for the Xbox borders on unfair, as wave after wave of heavily armed goons seem to follow you everywhere, while you run around sporting a fire extinguisher trying to put out a flaming building. 8 Eyes on the NES is about as unfair as they come. I remember wandering around in that game like a chicken with no head. Once I finally got to the end of this affair, I realized that it had all been for naught and that I had to beat the game again and write down what every boss said as it died. It was evil, but it was also extremely satisfying when you beat it. Enclave has a little bit of NES spirit in it, in that if you die during a level you are forced to return to the beginning of the level. It's that kind of difficulty, the kind that requires twitch reflexes and an omnipresent knowledge of games as a whole, that truly presents a challenge to the seasoned gamer.
A coworker asked me if maybe I'd gotten better at games over the years. While that's certainly a nice idea, I still can't beat Mighty Bomb Jack. So, no, I don't think it's that I'm better. It's just that the games are easier.
