Mauritanian media reported that the French embassy in Nouakchott terminated the contract of a well-known Mauritanian cartoonist after he drew a cartoon about French President Macron, which it considered “offensive.”
The website “Mauritania Today” said that the French embassy terminated the work contract of the prominent Mauritanian cartoonist Khaled Ould Moulay Idriss, under the pretext of insulting the symbols of the French Republic by publishing cartoons ridiculing French President Emmanuel Macron.
The cartoons of the Mauritanian plastic artist came in response to President Macron’s insistence on defending the cartoons insulting to the Prophet of Islam in France.
The French embassy’s decision sparked resentment and cynical reactions within the circles of social media activists in Mauritania, according to “Mauritania Today,” as they considered it evidence of the contradiction in the French proposal that raises the slogan of freedom of expression and the right to difference “Emphasizing that France defends and supports the abuse of Muslims, their symbols and their sanctities under the pretext of freedom of opinion and expression, while punishing those who express their opinion freely and exercise their right to disagree.”
