Yamaha heeft vooralsnog ook te kampen met ontploffende blokken dus dat kan nog best wat roet in het eten gooien. Ook in de WorldSBK zijn er afgelopen weekend twee gaan roken.

Ik zag het schema laatst van alle gebruikte blokken.. Volgens mij is Qua de enige met nog een ongebruikt blok... Dat zou kampioenschap op kunnen leveren..

Hoe bedoel je dat precies? Met een nog ongebruikt blok? Ze hebben allen 5 blokken, en zowel Rossi als Vinales zijn er nu al eentje kwijt. Dus eigenlijk hebben zij nu nog maar 4. En Qua nog 5.

Although no details of Yamaha's problems have been published, there are reports in Italy(link is external) that the issue involves exhaust sensors. There are usually two such sensors, one on the exhaust itself, and one inside the exhaust port, to measure the temperature of the exhaust gases as soon as possible after combustion, as a measure of how efficiently the engine is running.

The problem with the exhaust sensor in the exhaust port is that it is located behind the Dorna seals. That makes sense – temperature sensors have no moving parts and are generally reliable. If there is a problem, however, then Yamaha would have to get permission from the other MSMA members to allow the seals to be broken and parts to be replaced. Replacement parts are only allowed if they do not bring a performance benefit, which is clearly the case here, or if there are safety issues.

Racking up the miles

If they get the go ahead to replace the parts, then that would still leave the Yamaha riders with a problem, or at least the three riders who have all lost an engine. Based on historical averages of the mileage done at the tracks on the calendar, the riders will do up to 5200 km in practice and racing during the season. With five engines, that amounts to roughly 1040 km per engine, entirely manageable for a MotoGP engine.

With one engine lost for both Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi, that would leave them four for the remaining races. Those four engines would face an increased burden, requiring them to do about 1250 km each. That is a little over 20% more mileage per engine. A tougher ask, but not out of the question, though it would mean a lot more work for mechanics, dropping engines in and out of bikes in an attempt to use old engines up during practice, and keep newer, fresher engines for the races. Those old engines would also be run with a lower rev limit, to give them a better chance of survival.

What happens if any of the Yamaha riders can't complete the season with just their allocated engines? They will face a penalty for each new engine they use. If Valentino Rossi or Maverick Viñales have to take a sixth engine, for example, then they will have to start the first race after they start to use that engine from pit lane. The following race they can start from their qualifying position, as normal. If they are forced to take a seventh engine, the procedure would be repeated.

Paar jaar in Oostenrijk gewoond was ik gewend op ServusTV te kijken en daar kwam Stefan Bradl altijd als expert voorbij, lachen om hem nu op Marquez z'n fiets te zien.
