JERSEY CITY (NJ) - Bij een schietpartij in de Amerikaanse stad Jersey City is een agent gewond geraakt. Mogelijk zijn er nog meer gewonden gevallen. Een schutter zou het vuur hebben geopend bij een koosjere supermarkt.
Het schietgeweld barstte dinsdagmiddag los. Op video’s op sociale media is te zien hoe veiligheidsdiensten, onder meer een SWAT-team, massaal naar het plaats delict gaan. Ook zijn er talloze schoten te horen. Een agent werd met een kogel in de schouder geraakt, aldus Amerikaanse media.
„Ik kan de geweerschoten horen. Alsof er keihard vuurwerk wordt afgestoken”, zegt een getuige tegen persbureau AP. „De agenten waren iedereen van de straat af aan het halen.”
Er is nog veel onduidelijk over de dader(s) en de toedracht. Scholen en andere instellingen in de buurt zijn vanwege de schietpartij de rest van de dag gesloten.
Inmiddels wordt gezegd dat er 5 doden zijn waaronder een politieman.

At least one suspect then retreated to the supermarket and allegedly continued to fire at responding officers. Two other police officers were also struck by gunfire, but they are stable.
After the other officers retreated, the suspects remained barricaded inside the store, police said. Both suspects are believed to be down inside the store, but police have sent in a robot to make sure.
There are "multiple" people who are dead inside the building. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop told reporters in a press conference Tuesday afternoon. One civilian was injured, police said.
Several SWAT officers on the scene were seen barricading behind cars as several gunshots went off in the neighborhood, video shows.
The heavy gunfire continued for more than an hour.
The officer who died was taken to a local hospital with an apparent gunshot wound to his shoulder, police said.

Officials are still determining what started the gun battle. At a press conference Jersey City’s director of public safety, James Shea, said there was “no indication” that the incident was terror-related.
However, The New York Times notes that by the evening, the city’s mayor Steven Fulop said on Twitter that officials now believed that the gunmen had “targeted the location they attacked”, this being the JC Kosher Supermarket on Martin Luther King Jr Drive.
“I know the entire Jersey City community stands together with the Jewish Community during these challenging times,” Fulop tweeted.
Chaim Deutsch, a councillor in nearby New York City, tweeted on Tuesday night that “evidence indicates that this attack was motivated by antisemitism”.
“This is horrifying,” he added. “Jews have been attacked, beaten, & killed, simply because of our religion,” the Jewish Chronicle reports.
Investigators have since revealed that they believe the suspects’ getaway van contained an “incendiary device”, which was removed and taken away for examination.

De burgemeester van Jersey City zegt dat de mensen die gisteren drie bezoekers van een joodse supermarkt doodschoten hun doelwit bewust hebben uitgezocht. Maar hij weigert het vooralsnog een antisemitische aanslag te noemen, omdat het motief nog wordt onderzocht.
Bij een urenlang vuurgevecht kwamen ook de twee daders om het leven. Hun identiteit is nog niet bekendgemaakt.

Suspects were going to attack yeshiva school
Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop said he believes the shooters in Tuesday's attack were clearly targeting the children at the yeshiva school attached to the kosher supermarket,
citing footage of the shooting.
Fulop said it was "easy to conclude" the shooters' intentions were not just to shoot at those in the deli but to continue to the adjacent school — which contained 50 students, according to Fulop — given that footage and the number of weapons the two shooters possessed.
"It is pretty apparent that he goes to the adjacent door first and then turns.
