Los Angeles city and county firefighters were battling a fast-moving blaze in Sylmar on Thursday night that jumped the 210 Freeway and pushed toward the community, aided by Santa Ana winds, authorities said.
The blaze started about 9 p.m. on the north side of the freeway, but with winds gusting up to 40 mph, firebrands soared over the highway to the other side and ignited more dry brush.
The California Highway Patrol shut down the 210 Freeway in both directions near the Yarnell Street offramp and 5 Freeway interchange.
CHP dispatch logs showed many motorists calling 911 reporting they were stuck on the freeway because of the fire. One person said they were scared that the network of high-voltage power lines that dominate the skyline in that area could fall onto the freeway.
Those same power lines appeared to hinder firefighters’ efforts to drop water directly onto the flames as winds pushed the water sideways.
The fire was at least 20 acres without any containment.

The 2nd evacuation zone due to a massive fire in Sylmar is updated to extend to Mason to the west (West of Balboa, North of Sesnon and Mason as the western border). There are two evacuation centers open for residents and small pets, 2 shelters for large animals are also open. The fire that started from Sylmar has now jumped 5 freeway.
The massive fire comes as more than a million Californians are without electricity due to pre-emptive blackouts after Pacific Gas & Electric began switching off power the previous day in a bid to prevent a repeat of last year's catastrophic inferno which killed 86 people.
The power cuts enable utility companies to inspect high-voltage lines for damage during particularly flammable conditions caused by high winds and dry vegetation.
