INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (November 20, 2019) – 19-year-old Rinus VeeKay will become the youngest competitor in the 2020 NTT IndyCar Series with Ed Carpenter Racing (ECR), driving the No. 21 Chevrolet. The Hoofddorp, Netherlands driver will also become the youngest Dutchman to ever compete in the world’s largest single-day sporting event, the Indianapolis 500.
“I’m so happy,” said an ecstatic VeeKay. “It’s a dream come true and something we have worked extremely hard for over the last couple of years. To step up from USF2000 to the NTT IndyCar Series in three years is really special. I would like to thank Ed Carpenter and his partners for this great opportunity and trust. The number of available seats in the NTT IndyCar Series is very limited, so it’s a great honor that they have chosen me to join their team. I would like to thank Jumbo, La Place, KNAF TeamNL, my new partner Basic-Fit, all my other partners, my manager Charles Crews, but most all my family who made this all happen. I’m really looking forward to the start of the season.”
The move into the NTT IndyCar Series comes after a dominating Road To Indy career, where the young Dutchman competed in all three levels of the development series, tallying 16 victories, 36 podium finishes in 48 career races. In the midst of his six-wins, 14 podium finishes in 18 rounds and his runner-up finish in the Indy Lights championship last season, VeeKay completed his maiden IndyCar test with ECR in August, turning 144 laps around Portland International Raceway with impressive pace.
After sweeping the final two rounds of the Indy Lights season at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the Team NL driver once again tested the 2.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 Indy car with ECR at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in October. His pace and professionalism impressed the three-time Indianapolis 500 polesitter and team owner, Ed Carpenter.
“I have been following Rinus’s path through the Road to Indy, especially the past two years,” said Carpenter. “It was clear to me that he deserves to be in an Indy car. After his first day in a car at Portland this past season, that feeling became even more apparent. His pace, feedback and demeanor inside the car was very impressive for such a young driver. We’re very excited for the 2020 season to get here and have an ECR car return to Victory Lane!”
Since VeeKay’s first trip to the United States, his long-time mentor and Dutch IndyCar legend, Arie Luyendyk, has shown great support and believes in his ability to become the next great Dutch driver in IndyCar.
“This is really fantastic,” said the two-time Indy 500 winner, Luyendyk. “This all went really quick, but Rinus has outgrown the Indy Lights category. When you drive in the Road To Indy program, the NTT IndyCar Series team owners see you at all the races and can spot young talent. Ed Carpenter was impressed after the first test and the second test was really phenomenal. I noticed his talent a few years ago. It was the way he won both races at Road America [in USF2000 in 2017], that was really special. Rinus has a natural speed and it’s really impressive.”
VeeKay’s participation in the 104th Running of the Indianapolis 500 comes 30 years after Luyendyk’s first Indy 500 victory in 1990.
The 2020 NTT IndyCar Series is comprised of 17 races at 16 venues which include ovals, road course and street course venues. The world-famous Indianapolis 500 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the unchallenged highlight of the NTT IndyCar Series season, held on May 24, 2020. The 2020 NTT IndyCar Series season begins in St. Petersburg, Fla., March 13-15.
