HAWAII - Na de uitbarsting van de vulkaan Kilauea op Hawaii zijn zeker 21 woningen compleet verwoest. Er vielen geen gewonden. Vanuit een helikopter zijn spectaculaire beelden van de uitbarsting gemaakt. Te zien is hoe de lavastroom niets heel laat van (vakantie)woningen met zwembad.
Zo’n 1700 inwoners van het woongebied rond de vulkaan zochten eerder een veilig heenkomen. Ontheemde eilandbewoners kunnen terecht bij meerdere opvangcentra.
Vulkaanuitbarsting Hawaii: gebied geėvacueerd
Het gaat om huizen in de wijk Leilani Estates ten oosten van de berg op het grootste eiland van de archipel. Ook zijn tien scheuren ontstaan in het aardoppervlak waardoor lava ontsnapt.
Volgens het Amerikaanse seismologische dienst USGS begon de uitbarsting van Kilauea op 30 april. De uitbarsting ging gepaard met verschillende aardbevingen die beperkte schade veroorzaakten aan wegen op het eiland en voor korte stroomstoringen zorgden.
Schildvulkaan
De Amerikaanse staat Hawaii telt meerdere vulkanen en Kilauea is een van de meest actieve vulkanen ter wereld. Het gaat om een zogenoemde schildvulkaan. Als die uitbarst kan het lava niet alleen uit de krater stromen maar ook door ondergrondse scheuren op andere plaatsen aan de oppervlakte komen.
Eigenlijk stelt het geen fuck voor als je het vergelijkt met andere vulkaanuitbarstingen. Maar goed, het is Murica, met veel sensationele tv zenders.

Klopt.... op tien plaatsen is de grond gescheurd en daar komt lava naar boven. Theoretisch kan de hele "riftzone" open scheuren en dan heb je van punt 6 tot 10 één grote uitbarsting die zich mogelijk nog naar oost en/of west zal uitbreiden.quote:

Rates of seismicity and deformation changed little throughout the day and gas emissions likely remain elevated in the vicinity of fissures.

Geologists warned Wednesday that Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano could soon experience explosive eruptions from its summit and launch large rocks and ash into the air.
The threat of explosive activity will rise as lava drains from the summit of Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and explosions will be possible in the coming weeks if the lava dips below the groundwater table, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.
If lava drops below the groundwater level, it could heat up the water and create steam. The steam could build in pressure as rocks fall and form a dam within the volcano’s walls and "cause steam-driven explosions" with "very little warning,” the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
There could also be potential for ash and sulfur dioxide emissions. Ash can cause eye and breathing irritation, reduce visibility and interfere with electrical lines, the Los Angeles Times reported.
So far, the eruption has destroyed 36 structures since it began releasing lava from fissures that opened in a Big Island neighborhood about 25 miles east of the summit crater. A 15th vent opened Wednesday, spreading lava through Leilani Estates and neighboring Lanipuna Gardens, Hawaii officials said.
