"I am sorry to tell you all that Sue passed away last night after a two-year battle with cancer," Clark wrote on Grafton's official Facebook page. "She was surrounded by family, including her devoted and adoring husband Steve. Although we knew this was coming, it was unexpected and fast."
Grafton died at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California, after battling cancer of the appendix, Alexis Welby, director of publicity at her publisher, G.P. Putnam's Sons, told CNN.
Grafton started the alphabet novels in 1982, according to the author's webpage. All of them featured private eye Kinsey Millhone, a former police officer who was a quiet rebel. Millhone has trouble dealing with bureaucracy and "an aversion to cooking, a lack of interest in fashion, and an affinity for books," Grafton wrote in a brief biography of Millhone.
Grafton's last alphabet mystery was published last August. "Z Is for Zero" was tentatively scheduled to come out in 2019. "Many of you are asking (some quite plaintively) what I intend to do when I get to 'the end' of the alphabet," Grafton wrote on her webpage. "I've been consistent in my response which is 'no clue.' I want to see what kind of shape I'm in mentally and physically."
Other mystery writers posted online tributes. Lisa Scottoline tweeted: "Very sad to hear that the wonderful Sue Grafton has passed. She forged a path for women in crime fiction, and all of us followed and adored her. Deepest condolences to her family."

Groenevelt, van huis uit instrumentenmaker, was van 1969 tot 1979 voorzitter van de Industriebond NVV, daarna tot 1983 van de Industriebond FNV.
De man stond bekend als een radicale, rechtlijnige bestuurder, die zich hard maakte voor de verheffing van de arbeider. Later matigde hij zijn standpunten iets.
Na zijn pensionering werd hij actief in de gemeentepolitiek in Houten, waar hij in 2003 lijstduwer was voor de lokale PvdA. In 2015 schreef Groenevelt een terugblik op zijn leven onder de titel De lotgevallen van een crisiskind.

Smits meldde zich in 1968 in de Moergestelse gemeenteraad om vier decennia later - vanuit de raad van Oisterwijk - terug te treden. Zestien jaar lang was hij wethouder in Moergestel. Toen burgemeester Poort ziek werd, was Smits in de jaren zeventig bijna twee jaar zijn waarnemer. Ook onder de nieuwe burgemeester, Ter Veer, bleef Smits de spil om wie alles, zo niet veel, draaide.
De anekdote van de gele kattebelletjes komt van Jan Vriens, die jarenlang namens hun Partij voor Gemeenschappelijke Belangen (PGB) de rechterhand van Smits in de gemeenteraad van Moergestel was. ,,Een rasbestuurder", herdenkt Vriens zijn voorman van weleer.
Anti-establishment
,,Een machtspoliticus", typeert Ad van den Oord, die Smits als politieke rivaal meemaakte in de raad van Oisterwijk. ,,Hij was voor mij een leermeester in het politieke handwerk. Een linkse rakker was hij beslist niet, maar anti-establishment waren we allebei. Zijn verhouding met burgemeester Kortmann was even moeizaam als de mijne."
In Oisterwijk zou Smits zijn nieuwe partij Algemeen Belang aan de macht weten te brengen, om vervolgens het dagelijks bestuur over te laten aan een partijgenoot van beduidend minder gewicht.
AB had hij op de valreep van de gemeentelijke herindeling in Moergestel opgericht. Daar ging een paleisrevolutie met persoonlijke vetes binnen de PGB aan vooraf. Het liet nog maar eens zien dat achter de charmes van Smits een straatvechter school. Tegenspraak dulden was niet zijn sterkste kant.
Zijn betrokkenheid bij de Moergestelse samenleving bleef echter onomstreden. ,,Soms schreef hij namens inwoners een brief aan de gemeente, terwijl hij zelf in het college zat", vertelt Ruud van de Ven, die hem als voorman van Algemeen Belang opvolgde.
Jarenlang was Smits voorzitter van de Katholieke Bond van Ouderen; hij schreef tal van historische boeken en artikelen over Moergestel; leverde menig in memoriam van een dorpsgenoot voor weekblad Moergestel Nieuws; mobiliseerde het dorp voor een standbeeld van de Schotse generaal Barber en dat van de schoenmaker; schreef verhaaltjes in het Moergestels dialect (zonder zich in het openbaar op plat praten te laten betrappen); en zat een kwarteeuw lang regionale heemkring De Kleine Meijerij voor.
In die laatste hoedanigheid sprong hij geregeld in de bres voor behoud van monumenten of paadjes. Als politicus had hij daar nu juist niet in kunnen excelleren. Voor het Sint Jansplein, een fantasieloze parkeervlakte, moest het intieme dorpshart plat. De arbeiderswoninkjes van de Bokkenhoek en de stoommaalderij aan het Rootven glipten door de vingers van wethouder Smits.
Bij zijn afscheid van de gemeentepolitiek waarschuwde hij: 'Jullie zijn nog niet van me af.' Maar zijn ziekte leidde een terugtocht in. Van Den Boogaard had hij de geschiedenis te boek gesteld, maar toen vorig jaar het gemeenschapshuis wankelde, mengde Noud Smits zich niet in de discussie.
Noud Smits, Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau en ereburger van Oisterwijk, laat zijn vrouw Netty en twee zonen Arno en René achter. De uitvaartdienst is zaterdag om 11 uur in de St. Janskerk. Oud-pastoor Van den Broek gaat voor.
Bron: Het Financieele Dagbladquote:Directeur Peter Kruyt van schade-expert CED Group is vrijdag geheel onverwacht overleden aan de gevolgen van een hartstilstand. Dat heeft het bedrijf uit Capelle aan den IJssel zondag bekendgemaakt.
De 57-jarige Kruyt was met vakantie en verbleef met zijn vrouw en twee zoons in het Midden-Amerikaanse land Costa Rica, terwijl zijn dochter in Nederland was. Kruyt werkte vanaf 2005 bij CED in diverse directiefuncties. Daarvoor was hij onder andere werkzaam bij verzekeraar De Goudse en Heineken.
De afgelopen jaren gaf hij leiding aan het Centrum Veilig Wonen, een joint venture van ingenieursbureau Arcadis en CED. Het Centrum Veilig Wonen is de uitvoeringsorganisatie op het terrein van het herstellen van aardbevingsschade en het versterken van woningen in het gebied van het Groninger gasveld. Voor CED was Kruyt onder meer betrokken bij de ontwikkeling van een Europees netwerk voor internationale (cross border)schadebehandeling.
Durfinvesteerder
De Zuid-Hollandse schade-expert noemt Kruyt een ‘charismatisch, kundig en bevlogen leider en vooral een fijn en warm mens’. Het nieuws van Kruyts dood komt slechts enkele dagen nadat bekend was geworden dat de CED Group in handen komt van een durfinvesteerder uit Parijs.
BlackFin Capital Partners neemt de Nederlandse schade-expert over. Het overgrote deel van de aandelen van CED Group is in handen van de verzekeraars Achmea, Aegon, ASR, NN (via Delta Lloyd), de Goudse en Reaal.
Zij zijn al akkoord gegaan met de overname. Kleinere aandeelhouders, waaronder intermediairs, moeten hun fiat nog geven. Dat geldt ook voor de ondernemingsraad van het schadebedrijf dat in het gebroken boekjaar 2017 een omzet behaalde van ¤170 mln en een nettowinst van ¤3,8 mln.

Fulmer was in de Tweede Wereldoorlog vlieger tijdens de Slag om Arnhem. De Amerikaan Fulmer is 98 jaar geworden en overleed op oudjaarsdag, zo maakte het ministerie van Defensie gistermiddag bekend. De oud-vlieger was een van de vier nog levende dragers van de hoogste militaire onderscheiding, de Militaire Willems-Orde. Die kreeg hij vanwege betoonde heldenmoed als tweede vlieger op een Douglas C47, tijdens een levensgevaarlijke troepentransportvlucht.
Op 18 september 1944 naderde het toestel de Waal bij De Maten in Dodewaard. Doel was de Ginkelse Heide bij Ede korte tijd later, waar het vliegtuig parachutisten zou droppen. De Dakota werd echter getroffen door Duits afweergeschut. De piloot verloor daarna het bewustzijn.
Fulmer nam het stuur over en hield het brandende vliegtuig net zo lang in de lucht dat bijna alle parachutisten op tijd uit het vliegtuig konden springen. Daarna kreeg hij het toestel veilig aan de grond tussen Dodewaard en Opheusden. Hij raakte tijdens de crash in de vuurzee zwaargewond aan zijn gezicht, nek en armen. Voor piloot James Spurrier en radio-operateur William Hollis kwam hulp te laat. Ook parachutist Alfred Penwill kwam om het leven. Hij maakte een dodelijke val nadat granaatsplinters zijn parachute hadden verscheurd.
De inmiddels overleden Geurt de Wit en de familie Willemsen verleenden eerste hulp aan Fulmer. ,Hij brandde toen hij uit het vliegtuig kwam'', vertelde Geurts weduwe Pietje eerder tijdens een herdenking in Opheusden. ,,Ze hebben de vlammen met water uit de Linge gedoofd en hem verborgen voor de Duitsers.''
De huisartsen Van Empel en Zwaresteyn verzorgden hem stiekem in villa De Snellenburg in Opheusden. Een verzetsgroep bracht de zeventien geallieerden later naar boerderij De Hazenhof in Kesteren. Een paar dagen later loodste het verzet de mannen via IJzendoorn in roeiboten de Waal over naar bevrijd gebied. Onderzoekers van de regionale geschiedenis legden onlangs alle details bloot van de reddingsactie. Onderzoeker en schrijver Bart Belonje uit Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel schreef er een boek over onder de titel To Honour and Remember.
Op dit moment zijn er nog drie dragers van de hoogste militaire onderscheiding in leven. De Brit Kenneth Mayhew, voor zijn heldendaden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de Nederlandse militairen Marco Kroon en Gijs Tuinman voor hun heldhaftige inzet in Afghanistan.

Aharon Appelfeld, one of Israel’s most prolific and talented writers, who brought forth a rich library of Holocaust fiction, memoirs and essays in 47 books, died Thursday. He was 85.
A winner of multiple literary awards, Appelfeld was the recipient of the 1983 Israel Prize for literature and the 1989 National Jewish Book Award for fiction, and in 1997 was appointed a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Appelfeld wrote his fiction in Hebrew, a language he didn’t learn until he was 13 and had arrived in pre-state Israel, following harrowing escapes and painful experiences in Ukraine, Russia and Europe during and after the Holocaust.
Much of Appelfeld’s fiction was based on his own life, transforming memory into fiction, as he told The Independent in a 2012 interview.

“I’m not writing memoirs — I’m using pieces of my own experience,” he said.
His first book translated into English was “Badenheim 1939,” still part of the syllabus in many Holocaust classes, and like many of his later novels, a short, sharp metaphor of the events of his life, focused on Jewish life in Europe, and often vividly evoking the Holocaust without referring to it directly.
Appelfeld was born in Czernowitz, Bukovina (Romania between the wars, and now Ukraine), to deeply assimilated parents who thought of themselves as Europeans, and not particularly Jewish. His grandparents were observant Jews whom he loved to visit, farmers with a synagogue on their own grounds.
That idyllic childhood came to an end in 1940, when the Romanians took over his town from the Soviet army, and his mother was murdered. Appelfeld and his father were deported to a German concentration camp, where they were separated and from which Appelfeld escaped and went on the run, a wild boy on his own in the Ukranian forest.
He wrote in his books about being a child alone in the world, picking fruits to eat, finding shelter to sleep, and being adopted by Ukranian criminals who didn’t know he was Jewish and treated him like a slave, though allowing him to survive. He later met a village prostitute who gave him shelter for five months, and who later became a character in “Blooms of Darkness.”
Appelfeld spent some time in the Soviet army as a cook, and after the war, ended up in a displaced persons camp in Italy before immigrating to pre-state Israel in 1946. He was just 13 at the time, though his experiences and the things he had seen had aged him prematurely.
Some subsequent phases of his life were absurd for a boy who had survived on his own since the age of 9. He went to a farm school, a typical transitional experience at the time, where, he wrote, “they trained us to be peasants.”
Appelfeld found it hard to be surrounded by kids his own age, forced to speak after so many years on his own in nature, in silence. The motifs of silence, muteness and stuttering run through many of his works.
In Israel, Appelfeld unexpectedly found his father’s name on a Jewish Agency list of survivors, a miracle so unexpected and emotional that he never was able to write about it. But he wrote of many other things, completing his studies at Hebrew University and starting with short stories before progressing to novels.
He struggled to learn the rejuvenated Hebrew of the nascent State of Israel, writing later that he used the dictionary and copied out parts of the Bible, starting with Genesis and moving from chapter to chapter, book to book. It was an experience that ultimately enriched his writing and thoughts.
He wrote about his family from a location and place that was far removed from the vistas of his childhood.
Once he was living in Jerusalem and writing in cafés — a habit that he kept up for the rest of his life, and that made him feel close to his hometown — he took on literary mentors, such as S.Y. Agnon and Haim Hazaz.
His jottings, including those on napkins and scraps of paper, as well as his notes, books and manuscripts, are in the archives of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, where he taught for much of his career.
He was married to Judith, an Argentinian immigrant, with whom he had three children, and lived in Mevasseret Zion, just outside Jerusalem.

Zijn televisiecarrière begon bij de VARA, waar hij programmamaker en regisseur werd. In de jaren 70 en 80 was hij vaste tekstschrijver voor In de Rooie Haan en Kinderen voor Kinderen. Gadellaawerkte ook jarenlang mee aan het satirische KRO-programma Ook Dat Nog. Hij was enige jaren getrouwd met VARA-presentatrice Astrid Joosten.

Gadellaa verzorgde ook mediatrainingen voor politici en mensen uit het bedrijfsleven. Hij was op de achtergrond betrokken bij de partij 50Plus. Oud-VARA-man en 50Plus-voorzitter Jan Nagel schrijft op de website van de partij dat een "uniek en markant persoon" is overleden. "Jack heeft veel voor 50Plus betekend. Jack was enorm origineel. Zijn vermogen om te kunnen typeren was bijna onbegrensd."
Gadellaa wordt in besloten kring gecremeerd.

The British Grammy-nominated record producer, sound engineer, and mixer is best known for his work with many heavy metal bands, including JUDAS PRIEST, ANVIL, GARY MOORE, THIN LIZZY, HELLOWEEN, ANGRA, ANTHEM, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN and TYGERS OF PAN TANG. Tsangarides also worked with a number of pop and alternative artists, including DEPECHE MODE, TOM JONES, CONCRETE BLONDE and THE TRAGICALLY HIP.
BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi said that he was "so saddened to hear" of Tsangarides's passing. "He has been a part of my life since '70 when he worked as tape operator on the SABBATH album 'Sabotage' and he's worked with me on lots of other albums and stuff," he said. "What a lovely bloke he was and we always got on really well and had a great laugh too! He'll be sadly missed. RIP, my friend." SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler added: "Sad to hear of Chris Tsangarides passing away. He worked on the 'Sabotage' album, a thoroughly lovely bloke. R.I.P. Chris."
Former BLACK SABBATH and WHITESNAKE bassist Neil Murray called Tsangarides "a lovely man and very talented." He added that Chris will be "sadly missed by all who knew him, I'm sure."
Scottish hard rockers THE AMORETTES also mourned Tsangarides's death, saying they were "utterly devastated" to hear about his passing. "Chris produced our 'Game On' album, the record that pretty much started us on this crazy journey," they said. "Just as we are gearing up to release our newest album, we want to just send our love to all his family and friends. Chris, you were an absolute gentleman, and it was a pleasure. Rest in peace, dark lord."
British alternative rock band BLIND TIGER wrote on its Facebook page: "Chris, you were our mentor, our inspiration and our friend. We'll never forget the things you have taught us over the years. You saw something in us and gave us the opportunity to grow into the band we are today. You are and always will be our hero. We love you, Chris. You will never be forgotten."
Ex-TIGERTAILZ singer Kim Hooker said that Tsangarides "was a legend. The list of greats he worked with speaks for itself," he wrote. "He was up there with the best of them. Above all, he was the one who guided me through my numerous mental episodes at the 'Bezerk' sessions. I love you, Sponka. RIP my dear friend."
TYGERS OF PAN TANG wrote on Facebook: "The band are saddened by the news that legendary rock producer Chris Tsangarides has passed away... A true godfather in the rock music world and will be sorely missed. He worked on 'Wildcat', 'Spellbound' and 2012 album 'Ambush'... The guys would like to send their deepest condolences to his family and friends."
SAXON drummer Nigel Glockler said: "So very sorry to wake up to the news that Chris Tsangarides has passed. A truly fantastic producer and even better person."

Several years ago, Tsangarides spoke about his lengthy and diverse resume during an interview with Tape Op. He said: "I developed such good friendships when I was working at studios. As a 'house dude,' you've got to do whatever the hell is booked in. I liked it. When I started producing, again totally by fluke, I was asked to record a Gary Moore solo record called 'Back On The Streets'. He said to me, 'You can produce this, by the way.' I thought he was joking and realized he wasn't. I said, 'Okay. You play it and I'll record it.' That's basically what we did — with a guitar player as awesome as him and a drummer like Simon Phillips. Then he brought in Phil Lynott and Brian Downey from THIN LIZZY, and we recorded a track called 'Parisienne Walkways', which got released and becomes a fuckin' massive, huge hit. Suddenly I was a successful producer. I did what I always did — made people laugh, we recorded and had a great time. I was very, very fortunate to have that break. People get interested in coming to you after that.
"Anything to do with an 'art' kind of job, whether you're an actor or a musician or whatever, you never know if you're going to be successful or not. Anything that's been really successful for me has never been contrived. We just do it because that's our music.
"One of the biggest records I ever had was CONCRETE BLONDE ['Bloodletting'] and that's hardly heavy metal by any stretch of the imagination. They were into THIN LIZZY, so that's how they got in touch with me. After doing CONCRETE BLONDE, I got to do EXODUS [in part because they] liked CONCRETE BLONDE — go figure."
Tsangarides added: "That's what people don't understand. Just because you might be perceived as one thing, it doesn't mean you don't do anything else. That's the way we like to compartmentalize our lives. 'You're a heavy metal producer.' Well, yeah, I produce heavy metal records, but... I see the merit, the work, the love and the rest of it for everything I do. I've been very lucky in that respect. Another band from Canada, THE TRAGICALLY HIP, are an absolute monster act over there. It's opened up avenues of alternative styles of music, which keeps me working. It wasn't by design. I'm not a guru that looks into some crystal ball, knows what's going to go on and follows the route. It's just that I've been incredibly fortunate in being to able to work with such diverse acts. I've been lucky that people have been open-minded enough to realize there's a lot of things you can learn from heavy metal records, or from country and western records."

NASA announced earlier today that Young died at the age of 87 due to complications from pneumonia.
Born on September 24th, 1930, Young attended the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he earned his degree in aeronautical engineering in 1952. From there, he joined the US Navy, served aboard the USS LAWS during the Korean War, and went on to attend the Navy Test Pilot School. In 1962, NASA selected him as part of Astronaut Group 2, the second batch of pilots that included Neil Armstrong, Frank Borman, Pete Conrad, Jim Lovell, James McDivitt, Elliot See, Thomas Strafford, and Ed White.
At NASA, Young enjoyed a notable career. Along with fellow astronaut Gus Grissom, he was the pilot for Gemini 3 on March 23rd, 1965, the first crewed mission of the program. Together, they orbited Earth three times, testing thrusters that allowed the crew to maneuver in space, and was later reprimanded for smuggling a corn beef sandwich for the ride.

Young returned to space on July 18th, 1966 as the Command Pilot for Gemini 10, along with future Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins. The two spent almost three days in space, completing 43 orbits of Earth. During that time, they performed rendezvous maneuvers with a pair of Agena target vehicles that were already in orbit.
From there, Young joined the Apollo program, where he was assigned to the Apollo 7 backup crew as the Command Module Pilot, along with astronauts Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan. That team later became the prime crew for Apollo 10, which performed a “dress rehearsal” in May 1969 for the Apollo 11 mission. He also served as the backup commander for Apollo 13, and was involved in the efforts to bring the crew home after an explosion crippled the spacecraft.

In 1972, as Commander for the Apollo 16 mission, Young became the ninth person to walk on the Moon. Along with Charlies Duke Jr., he landed in the Descartes Highlands on April 21st, where they spent three days on the lunar surface. There, they set up scientific equipment, collected 200 pounds of rocks, and used their lunar rover to drive over 16 miles. According to David Hitt and Heather R. Smith in Bold They Rise: The Space Shuttle Early Years, 1972-1986, Young learned that Congress had approved funds for the development of NASA’ next big project, the Space Shuttle.
After his return to Earth, the shuttle would become Young’s next focus. NASA promoted him to Chief of the Space Shuttle Branch of the Astronaut Office in 1973, and then the entire Astronaut Office, which oversees training and operations of the Astronaut corps. He helped develop the training protocols for the crews that would fly the space shuttle, and was named Command Pilot for the program’s maiden flight with Space Shuttle Columbia in April 1981, where he spent two days in space along with astronaut Robert Crippen.

His sixth and final flight came in November 1983, when he commanded Columbia on the STS-9 mission, which tested out a variety of scientific experiments with the Spacelab module. He was scheduled to fly for a seventh time to launch the Hubble Space Telescope in 1986, only to have that mission scrubbed following the loss of Space Shuttle Challenger. He later served as Special Assistant to the Director of Johnson Space Center for Engineering, Operations, and Safety.
While Young retired from NASA in 2004, he remained a constant figure at the agency. Over his 42 year career at the space agency, Young played key roles in some of NASA’s defining moments, and helped transition the agency from its focus on reaching the Moon with Gemini and Apollo to the Space Shuttle era.
In a statement, acting NASA Administrator Robert Lightfoot said that Young was one of the “early space pioneers whose bravery and commitment sparked our nation’s first great achievements in space,” who spent his entire life in the service to his country, and that he was “in every way the ‘astronaut’s astronaut.’”

Lopend was hij met zijn moeder vanuit Hilversum naar concentratiekamp Amersfoort getogen om er zijn vader op te halen. Toen hij daar op 4 mei 1945 aankwam, vroeg Loes van Overeem van het Rode Kruis, bijgenaamd de Witte Engel, aan de pas 14-jarige Frans van den Berg of hij de appèlklok wilde luiden, als teken dat Nederland was bevrijd.
Van den Berg deed het voor de 475 mensen die er toen nog zaten en nog even geen kant op konden sinds het kamp op 19 april door de Geallieerden was bevrijd. Het zou eind jaren tachtig een traditie worden om Frans van den Berg op zowel 19 april als 4 mei de klok te laten luiden, als herinnering aan de slachtoffers van dit kamp.
Vanwege zijn gezondheidsproblemen moest kleindochter Rowan van den Berg vorig jaar de honneurs waarnemen. Frans van den Berg overleed 1 december op 87-jarige leeftijd in Almere.
Van den Berg werd 11 juni 1930 in Rijswijk geboren. Zijn vader, ook Frans geheten, was daar chef-kok van verschillende horecagelegenheden, zoals sociëteit De Witte. Later werd hij cateraar bij Van Santen, waar hij bekend werd om zijn communistische sympathieën. Toen ruim een jaar na het begin van de bezetting van Nederland de nazi's ook de Sovjet-Unie binnenvielen, werden alle communisten van hun bed gelicht en geïnterneerd.
Van den Berg sr. kwam in kamp Schoorl terecht en werd op 18 augustus 1941 overgebracht naar het nieuwe straf- en concentratiekamp Amersfoort. 'De bedoeling was toen dat hij naar een kamp in Duitsland zou gaan. Dat had hij ongetwijfeld niet overleefd. Maar ze kwamen erachter dat hij kok was. Dat werd zijn redding. Hij moest gaan koken, zowel voor de bewakers - heel goed eten - als voor de gevangenen - noodgedwongen vaak slecht en zeker te weinig eten', vertelt kleindochter Rowan van den Berg.
Frans, die al gauw de bijnaam 'Frans de Kok' kreeg, was niet alleen een van de allereerste gevangen van kamp Amersfoort, hij was ook de laatste die het kamp zou verlaten. In de tussentijd zouden er 37 duizend gevangenen verblijven, van wie er 20 duizend werden getransporteerd naar Duitsland. In het kamp overleden 650 mensen.
Frans jr. groeide dus in de oorlog op zonder zijn vader. Met zijn moeder verhuisde hij naar Hilversum. Hier hoorden ze in 1945 dat de Duitse bewakers het kamp op 19 april hadden verlaten en dat het Rode Kruis de leiding had overgenomen. Loes van Overeem waarschuwde de gevangenen echter niet naar huis te gaan omdat het nog te gevaarlijk was. Zij beloofde dat 'Frans de Kok' ervoor zou zorgen dat iedereen goed te eten zou krijgen. Op 4 mei kwam kwam om tien uur 's avonds het bericht dat de Duitsers op 5 mei 8.00 uur de overgave zouden ondertekenen. Van Overeem zei tegen de zoon van Frans de Kok: 'Fransje, luid jij de kampbel maar'.
En nadat de klok, die sinds 19 april niet meer had geluid, opnieuw had geklonken wist iedereen dat het voorbij was. 'Dat Loes van Overeem juist de zoon van Frans de Kok vroeg de bel te luiden zal ermee te maken hebben dat ze wilde uitstralen dat het met de voedselvoorziening voor gevangenen nog wel goed zat', vermoedt Remco Reinding van het herinneringscentrum Kamp Amersfoort.
Tijdens de drie maanden daarop was het Frans jr. door zijn vader verboden naar de voormalige schietbaan te gaan. Hij was eigenwijs en nam toch stiekem een kijkje. Toen hij over de bosrand op de schietbaan keek zag hij de opgraving van 49 geliquideerde kampgevangenen. Het beeld zou altijd op zijn netvlies blijven staan.
Frans van den Berg jr. werd vader van drie zonen en zou later in de kunststofindustrie werken.

Under Mr Sutherland’s energetic and determined leadership, the 123 signatories to the GATT reached agreement later that year and signed the Marrakesh Agreement concluding the Uruguay Round and creating the WTO.

Rock legend Ray Thomas has died at the age of 76 following a battle with prostate cancer.
Ray originally left the band in 1999 because of ill health. Moody Blues formed back in 1964 and are best known for hit singles such as "Go Now", "Nights in White Satin", "Tuesday Afternoon", and "Question".
Moody Blues, who have been awarded 18 platinum and gold discs and have sold 70 million albums worldwide, will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year.
In a statement released last night, Ray's record label confirmed that he had died last Thursday.
"It is with profound sorrow and sadness that Cherry Red Records and Esoteric Recordings regret to announce that Ray Thomas, founder member, flautist and vocalist of the Moody Blues, passed away suddenly at his home in Surrey on Thursday," the statement read.
"We are deeply shocked by his passing and will miss his warmth, humour and kindness. It was a privilege to have known and worked with him and our thoughts are with his family and his wife Lee at this sad time."
When he was first diagnosed with cancer back in 2014, Ray said: "'The cancer is being held in remission but I'll be receiving this treatment for the rest of my life.
"I have four close friends who have all endured some kind of surgery or treatment for this cancer and all are doing well.
"While I don't like to talk publicly about my health problems, after Alvin [Stardust]'s death, I decided it was time I spoke out.
"'A cancer diagnosis can shake your world and your family's but if caught in time it can be cured or held in remission.
'I urge all males to get tested NOW. Don't put it off by thinking it won't happen to me. It needs to be caught early.
"It's only a blood test - a few minutes out your day to save yourself from this disease. Love and God Bless, Ray.'"

Mohan, chairman of Mohan Meakin, the maker of Old Monk rum, passed away on Saturday following a cardiac arrest at Mohan Nagar, near Ghaziabad. He was 88. He was the man behind famous brands like Old Monk, Solan No.1, and Golden Eagle, before age and competition caught up.
The teetotaller, who drew strength primarily from other spirits – of the holy kind – ran the company under his watch for over four decades. Only a year ago, he passed on the executive control to his nephews Hemant and Vinay, though he continued to be the chairman.
Pushed to the helm, following the death of his elder brother V.R. Mohan in the early 1970s, Kapil saw the emergence of the dark rum packed in the iconic squarish hard glass bottle as a global brand.
Till the mid 2000s, it was the largest-selling liquor brand in the country, with heavy patronage from military canteens. Old Monk held its own even as other brands such as Golden Eagle Beer were weathering the onslaught of Vijay Mallya-led United Breweries group and other competitors.
Yet, much of that market dominance seemed to have been achieved by word of mouth, than through conscious marketing efforts. “We do not advertise. I will not, and as long as I am in this chair, we will not (advertise),” Mohan had said in an interview in 2012. “The best way of my advertising is the product: When it comes to you and you taste it, you look at the difference and ask what is it. That is the best advertisement.”
Mohan was the president of the municipal committee in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan, where the company had its distillery and brewery. In fact, one of the secrets of the success of Old Monk and other brands was the fact that the water was sourced from the same natural spring in Solan as it was 150 years ago, when the facilities were first set up. People close to him say the Padma Shri awardee was averse to change and wanted things done the traditional way.
But the younger generation had other ideas. In mid 2000s, the family saw a separation with Rakesh ‘Rocky’ Mohan (son of V.R. Mohan), Kapil’s nephew breaking away. He eventually sold the company’s Lucknow facility to the Wave group of Ponty Chadha. In a short span of time, Chadha, who was seen close to the then Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati, brought under his control the liquor business in UP and other northern states.
The slide in Mohan Meakin’s fortunes coincided with the rise of Chadha. Meakin’s, which was once listed on the Calcutta Stock Exchange, has since been delisted.

Peter Haan was sinds de jaren zeventig betrokken bij de fanclub, die al in 1962 werd opgericht. Hij bekleedde van 1981 tot en met 2010 de functie van voorzitter.
De Rotterdammer, die al jaren in Groningen woonde, genoot zowel in de nationale als internationale Elvis-wereld veel aanzien. Hij maakte het voor veel Elvis-fans mogelijk om naar Amerika af te reizen, zowel voor als na het overlijden van Elvis, en bracht vanaf de jaren tachtig veel vrienden en muzikanten van Elvis voor optredens naar Europa.
De fanclub noemt zijn jarenlange inzet om de persoon Elvis en diens muziek levend te houden 'bijzonder en zeer groot'. In 2007 kreeg Haan voor zijn inzet een speciaal eerbetoon in Memphis, Tennessee. Uit handen van de burgemeester ontving hij de sleutel van de stad en hij werd benoemd tot ereburger van Memphis en Shelby County.
Ook in de geboorteplaats van Elvis, Tupelo, Mississippi, werd hij wegens zijn verdiensten tot ereburger benoemd. Daarnaast had hij geregeld ontmoetingen met Priscilla Presley en andere familieleden van Elvis.
