HUNTER LAWRENCE SIGNS MULTI-YEAR DEAL WITH GEICO HONDA

Rumors of Hunter Lawrence’s impending future in the United States have been confirmed today by Honda—the young Australian has signed with GEICO Honda and will race Monster Energy Supercross and Lucas Oil Pro Motocross beginning in 2019. He'll remain in the MX2 class in the FIM Motocross World Championship for 2018, but switch to Team Honda 114 Motorsports, which is owned by Giacomo Gariboldi. Lawrence rode for Stefan Everts' Suzuki team in 2017, but that team is rumored to be shuttering—both MXGP and MX2.

Our Steve Matthes and Adam Wheeler both reported on the rumor that Lawrence was Honda-bound during this weekend's Motocross of Nations. Perhaps the big surprise of the details is the length of the contract—Lawrence's GEICO Honda deal is for three seasons: 2019, 2020, and 2021, which means he's locked into Honda for the next four years.

“To join GEICO Honda and their list of riders past and present is an honor,” said Lawrence in a press release. “My family gave up a lot to get me to this point so the decision to sign with GEICO was a big one for us. They felt like family from the minute we started talking and are giving me support next year with 114 Motorsports Honda to win a world title. Then I will make the move to the U.S. full time in 2019.”

Lawrence finished ninth in his rookie MX2 campaign, but really cemented his place among the best prospects toward the end of the season, with an overall podium at the MXGP of USA and a moto win at the season-finale in France. Lawrence was brilliant at the Motocross of Nations last weekend as well, winning the MX2 campaign over Team USA’s Zach Osborne.

GEICO Honda team manager Dan Betley said negations with Lawrence started before the USGP.

“We’ve been talking to Hunter and his family for some time, even well before his strong performance at the USGP in Florida. His talent is obvious, and in the second half of his rookie season in MX2 you could really see him spread his wings and start running up front. Hunter and his family expressed the desire to stay in the GPs for one more season with the goal of winning the World Championship, following in the footsteps of other Australians like Chad Reed, who spent time winning races and battling for a title in the GPs before coming over here. We have watched Hunter ride and feel he will be more than ready by the time he comes here in 2019, and while we haven’t seen him ride supercross yet, we believe he has the talent and skills to excel there, too, and with this deal, also plenty of time to prepare.”

In the deal, GEICO Honda announced it will also provide technical support to the Gariboldi-owned Team 114 Motorsports Honda team, which is the first-such collaboration between the U.S. GEICO outfit and a Grand Prix team. Gariboldi is well-known in GP circles, as Tim Gajser rode for him en route to the 2015 MX2 World Championship, and Gariboldi has deep ties within the Honda HRC MXGP (450) team, which Gajser rides for today. We hear the new 114 Motorsports team will reportedly be managed by now-retired Women's World MX Champion Livia Lancelot.

Justin Hill (22) nu officieel naar JGRMX Suzuki

Jeremy Martin (23) blijft op de 250cc in 2018 en '19

“I’d say there are two reasons why I decided to stay in the 250 class,” says Martin. “The first one is really results—we had a good year and I finished second outdoors, but I want to do even better. I want to win more races and championships so when I move up to the 450 full-time I’m coming in with a lot of momentum. It was a big learning year working with a new team and a new bike and I really like the people over at GEICO Honda—I’m excited to keep working with them. The second reason is the new Honda CRF250R. I haven’t ridden one yet but I’ve heard it has a lot of the same characteristics of the CRF450R I raced at the Daytona Supercross. As soon as I hopped on that bike, I was comfortable immediately. From what I’ve heard the new 250 is very similar, if not even better. So I’m really looking forward to racing that bike.”

We’ve received news yesterday that Monster Energy/Yamalube/Chaparral/Yamaha Financial Services/Yamaha’s Davi Millsaps had an unfortunate get-off at the Yamaha Test Track in Corona, CA while testing for next weekend’s Monster Energy Cup. Details are scarce at the moment, but we heard that he sustained a concussion, as well as an injury to his elbow/arm.

This unfortunately comes just three days after the announcement of his new deal with Factory Yamaha for the 2018 Monster Energy Supercross Series alongside the #2 of Cooper Webb.

A new challenge for Livia Lancelot

Double World Champion and multiple French Champion, Livia Lancelot competed in her last race two weeks ago during the final round of the FIM Motocross Women World Championship. After twenty years of racing, including twelve seasons at the highest level, the charismatic Livy will embark on a new challenge in the coming weeks.

Doing most of her career with Kawasaki, Livia claimed numerous successes on a lime green bike, and she will keep working as part of |Team Green until the end of French Beach Race series.

But for such an active woman this project is not enough and Livia reached another dream as she will become the manager of a team involved in the MX2 World Championship.

“For a few years I have been riding with my own Team 114, and my dream has always been to enter the MX2 World Championship. Of course it would have been really great to do this with my current partners, but the involvement in the MX2 class is different than WMX so there is no possibility to continue with all of them and especially Kawasaki.

We had a long and successful story together since 2007, and I really want to thank Kawasaki Europe, Kawasaki France, Steve Guttridge and Fred Bassaler for their support during all these seasons and I think that we can be proud of what we achieved together,” she explained.

Not ready yet to spend time far from the tracks, Livia finally reached an agreement with another brand to continue her activities with team 114.

“Everyone in the industry knew that my project was to remain team owner/manager in the future, now another manufacturer is interested in that project and has decided to work with me. My new team will be involved next season with two riders, Hunter Lawrence and Bas Vaessen, who will enter the MX2 World Championship. It’s a kind of challenge to enter the MX2 World Championship with a new manufacturer, but they are really motivated and I will give 110% on this project, as I did when I was a racer,” she concludes.
