Handmaid's Tale Renewed for Season 2

Offred’s fight for independence will continue for at least another 10 episodes.

Four episodes into its acclaimed first season, The Handmaid’s Tale has been renewed for a second season at Hulu. In making the announcement, the streamer revealed that “The Handmaid’s Tale premiere has been watched by more Hulu viewers than any other series premiere – original or acquired – on the service.”

Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood, the drama stars Elisabeth Moss as Offred, a Handmaid in the Commander’s (Joseph Fiennes) household and one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world.
The cast also includes Alexis Bledel, Yvonne Strahovski and Ann Dowd.

“The response we’ve seen to The Handmaid’s Tale in just one week since its premiere has been absolutely incredible,” said Hulu’s Head of Content Craig Erwich in a statement. “It has been an honor to work with this talented team of cast and creators to develop a series that has struck such a chord with audiences across the country. As we continue to expand our strong slate of original programming, The Handmaid’s Tale is exactly the type of gripping and thought-provoking storytelling we want to bring to viewers. We can’t wait to explore the world of Gilead and continue Margaret’s vision with another season on Hulu.”

Emerald City Cancelled at NBC

NBC has opted not to move forward with a second season of its contemporary Wizard of Oz reboot Emerald City, TVLine has learned.

Emerald City launched last January with a tepid 4.5 million viewers and a 1.0 demo rating. By the time it wrapped its 10-episode run two months later, it had dipped to 2.9 mil/0.7.

Following the finale, exec producers Shaun Cassidy and David Schulner confirmed to EW.com that they had a plan for Season 2. “Should NBC choose to make another limited series based on Baum’s characters, David and I would welcome the opportunity,” the said. “If not, know that this has been one of the most fulfilling experiences either of us has enjoyed, and we remain humbled by all of our brilliant creative partners who made this show so exceptional.”

Rosewood Cancelled at Fox

The bloom is off the Rosewood.

The Morris Chestnut-led Fox drama has been cancelled after two seasons, according to our sister site Deadline.

Having averaged 4.8 million total viewers and a 1.3 demo rating during its freshman run, where it led into Empire on Wednesdays, Rosewood this season averaged 3 mil and a 0.7 on Fridays, and ended its season with a demo low of 0.5. Among fellow Fox dramas, it only rated higher than Scream Queens (0.6) and Sleepy Hollow (0.5).

Taken Renewed for Expanded Season 2

Never underestimate Bryan Mills: Despite mediocre ratings, NBC’s rookie drama Taken has been renewed for a relatively super-sized Season 2, TVLine has learned. The series — billed as a prequel to the Liam Neeson-fronted film franchise — will produce 16 new episodes, nearly double Season 1’s order of 10.

Taken premiered in February to 7.5 million total viewers and a 1.6 demo rating, landing just below time slot predecessor Timeless’ own apres-Voice launch. Its freshman run run went on to average 5.3 mil and a 1.1, matching fellow NBC newbies Timeless and Chicago Justice in the demo, while besting The Blacklist, Blindspot, Shades of Blue and Blacklist: Redemption.

Taken stars Vikings‘ Clive Standen as a younger version of Neeson’s ex-Green Beret. The cast also includes Friday Night Lights‘ Gaius Charles and The L Word‘s Jennifer Beals.

Chicago Fire, P.D. and Med Renewed

The #OneChicago franchise — or at least part of it — is in no danger of going anywhere.

NBC has renewed Chicago Fire and the spinoffs Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med, TVLine has learned.

Fire — which celebrated its 100th episode last December — will be heading into its sixth season.

The offshoots P.D. and Med, meanwhile, have been picked up for Season 5 and Season 3, respectively.

No decision has been made yet about the future of Chicago Justice.

Last Man Standing Cancelled at ABC

Last Man Standing is no longer on its feet: ABC has axed the Tim Allen sitcom after six seasons, TVLine has learned.

Allen starred as Mike Baxter, a conservative sporting-goods exec whose traditional values often clashed with those around him, including his liberal son-in-law Ryan (Jordan Masterson). Nancy Travis co-starred as Mike’s wife Vanessa; Amanda Fuller, Molly Ephraim and Kaitlyn Dever played Mike and Vanessa’s three daughters.

Last Man Standing was a Friday-night staple for ABC, racking up a total of 130 episodes. This season, it averaged 6.4 million total viewers and a 1.1 demo rating, down just a tick from Season 5 (as well as the season before that), but only out-rating fellow ABC comedies The Real O’Neals, Dr. Ken and newbie Imaginary Mary. It wrapped up its sixth and final season in March, with Jay Leno guest-starring in the finale.

The Blacklist Renewed for Season 5

Raymond Reddington may want to invest in a second fedora: The Blacklist has been renewed for a fifth season at NBC.

The 22-episode renewal comes as Season 4 gears up for a showdown between Reddington and his confidant-turned-nemesis, Mr. Kaplan. According to series creator Jon Bokenkamp, Mr. Kaplan “will undermine [Red’s] criminal empire in ways he never expected” and “intends to take him apart piece by piece” in the season’s final installments.

The Blacklist thus far this season has averaged 5.4 million weekly viewers and a 1.0 demo rating, down 20 and 30 percent from Season 3. Among NBC dramas, it only rates higher than Grimm‘s farewell season, the already renewed Shades of Blue, its in-limbo offshoot Blacklist: Redemption and the one-and-done Emerald City.

The Blacklist‘s two-hour finale airs Thursday, May 18, at 9/8c. Its spinoff series, The Blacklist: Redemption, has yet to be renewed.

American Gods Renewed for Season 2

Praise Gods!

Starz has renewed American Gods for a second season, the cable network announced Thursday.

Season 2 of the series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel will consist of at least eight episodes, and possibly more, and likely will premiere in mid-2018.

Executive producers Bryan Fuller, Michael Green and Neil Gaiman “have evolved the art form of television narratively, structurally and graphically with American Gods, and we’re thrilled to be working again with these artists as they continue to build the worlds and wars of the gods,” Starz programming president Carmi Zlotnik said via statement.

In a recent panel discussion hosted by yours truly, Fuller, Green and Gaiman confirmed that Season 1 would end at the point in the book just before Shadow Moon, Mr. Wednesday & Co. arrive at House on the Rock.

Goldbergs Renewed for Seasons 5 and 6

The Goldbergs will soon be flirting with the ’90s.

ABC has handed the circa-’80s comedy a two-season renewal, ensuring that the Wednesday staple will remain on the air through Season 6.

The pickup comes less than 24 hours after ABC similarly renewed fellow Wednesday stalwart Modern Family for two seasons.

Also in contention for the 2017-18 season is a ’90s-set Goldbergs spinoff centering on high school gym teacher Rick Mellor, a recurring character on the mothership; Bryan Callen, who plays Mellor, is attached to star. The premise: Mellor and another high school teacher team up to act as father figures to the kids at their Philadelphia school.

Powerless Cancelled at NBC

NBC has lost its lust for Powerless.

The superhero-adjacent comedy — which was from the network’s Thursday night schedule last month — has formally been cancelled.

Powerless, starring Vanessa Hudgens as the research director at a security company that protects average citizens from the superhero battles raging all around them, has struggled in the ratings since its February 2 debut. Last week’s airing pulled a mere 2.1 million total viewers and a 0.6 demo rating — a 30 percent drop in both categories from its Superstore lead-in.

Two episodes of the show’s original 13-episode order still have yet to air — including a guest spot from TV’s original Batman, Adam West. It’s unclear when (or if) those episodes will air. Along with Hudgens, the cast also included sitcom veterans Alan Tudyk (Suburgatory), Danny Pudi (Community), Ron Funches (Undateable) and Christina Kirk (A to Z).

ABC has cancelled family sitcom The Real O’Neals after two seasons, TVLine has learned. Noah Galvin starred as gay teen Kenny, whose decision to come out sent shockwaves through his tight-knit Catholic family; Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope) and Jay R. Ferguson (Mad Men) co-starred as Kenny’s parents Eileen and Pat.

O’Neals had an encouraging start to Season 2, landing an order for three additional episodes in November. But by the time it wrapped up its second season in March, it ranked as ABC’s least-watched comedy, averaging just 3.1 million viewers a week. The cancellation ends its series run at a total of 29 episodes.

The writing was on the wall in late March when cast member Matt Shively, who played Kenny’s older brother Jimmy, signed on to play the lead role in NBC’s since-scrapped comedy pilot Spaced Out.

Designated Survivor will live to see another term.

ABC has renewed the Kiefer Sutherland-led political thriller for a second season, TVLine has confirmed. The series’ pickup was set in motion last week with the hiring of Keith Eisner (The Good Wife) as Showrunner No. 4 (following the exits of Amy B. Harris, Jon Harmon Feldman and Jeff Melvoin).

The heavily-promoted Designated Survivor launched in September to a robust 10 million viewers and a 2.2 demo rating. Its numbers have since cooled considerably, with this week’s episode pulling in just shy of 5 million viewers and a 1.0 in the demo.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Renewed for Season 5 at ABC

Marvel-ous news for patient Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans: ABC has renewed the ratings-challenged but creatively re-energized series for Season 5, ending many months of speculation about its future.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this season has averaged 2.4 million weekly total viewers and a 0.7 demo rating, down 30 and 40 percent from Season 3. Among ABC dramas, it equals Quantico, The Catch and died-on-the-vine Conviction in the demo, and outperforms short-lived freshman Time After Time and Season 3 of American Crime.

That said, it enjoys a robust 129 percent boost via DVR playback, ranking fourth among all broadcast shows in that measure (behind iZombie, The Originals and ABC’s Designated Survivor).

In TVLine’s series of Keep or Cut? polls, S.H.I.E.L.D. had the third-strongest showing (90 percent “Keep”) of all bubble dramas polled, trailing NBC’s Timeless and Fox’s ill-fated Pitch.

Once Upon a Time Renewed at ABC for Dramatic Season 7 'Reset'

There will be no Swan song for Once Upon a Time just yet.

Ending months of speculation about the fantasy drama’s future, ABC has ordered a Season 7, it was announced Thursday by exec producer Adam Horowtiz on Twitter.

Set in a small Maine town populated by fairy tale characters (plus a bail bonds woman-turned-Savior), Once premiered in 2011 to 12.8 million total viewers and a 4.0 demo rating, marking that TV season’s highest-rated drama launch.

The past few seasons have seen a marked decline, however, hitting a demo low of 0.5 as recently as April 23. As such, the plan is to “reset” the narrative for Season 7, focusing on a young adult male (played by The Walking Dead‘s Andrew J. West) and a 10-year-old girl (Jane the Virgin‘s Alison Fernandez), with a TBA portion of the original cast continuing on in starring or recurring capacities. As we reported Monday, Jennifer Morrison will not be among the veterans sticking around.

What that tweaked series looks like will be hinted at in the two-hour season finale, airing Sunday, May 14 and promising “The Final Battle” between good and evil.

American Crime is no longer paying at ABC: The network has cancelled John Ridley’s Emmy-winning anthology drama after three seasons.

The series was never a ratings powerhouse for ABC, but its Season 3 ratings were particularly woeful; it wrapped its run on April 30 with an anemic 2 million viewers and a 0.4 demo rating. But Crime was arguably ABC’s most acclaimed drama of the past few years, snagging consecutive Emmy nominations for Best Limited Series and back-to-back wins for star Regina King.

Last month at Deadline‘s The Contenders Emmy soiree in Los Angeles, franchise vet Felicity Huffman seemed prepared for the worst, saying, “If there isn’t a Season 4, I’m so honored that this is our last season. I think ABC has changed the face of network TV and what network TV can do. … They are beyond what cable can do. Sometimes those things have a short shelf life, but the ripple effect is great.”

At the same event, exec producer Michael McDonald revealed that a fourth season would’ve centered on “women in the workplace,” before citing the recent sexual harassment scandals enveloping Uber and Fox News (Bill O’Reilly specifically) as examples.

It’s the end of the list line for The Blacklist: Redemption. NBC has cancelled the spinoff after one season, TVLine has confirmed.

Redemption, an offshoot of NBC’s James Spader-starring procedural The Blacklist, starred Ryan Eggold as his Blacklist character Tom Keen and Famke Janssen as Tom’s mother Scottie, who ran a private military corporation called Halcyon Aegis with an army of covert mercenaries.

The Blacklist: Redemption debuted in February to 4.3 million total viewers and a 0.8 demo rating, and held pretty steady over its eight-episode run. That said, among NBC dramas it only rated higher than one-and-done Emerald City, while matching Grimm’s farewell run and the already-renewed Shades of Blue.

The spinoff unofficially launched with a backdoor-pilot episode of The Blacklist (“Susan Hargrave”) in May of last year.It’s possible that Tom Keen will be reuniting with Liz and Red Reddington soon, though: NBC renewed The Blacklist for a fifth season earlier this week.

In the immortal words of Captain Raymond Holt: “Hot damn!” Fox has renewed Brooklyn Nine-Nine for Season 5, TVLine has learned.

Co-creator Dan Goor was always optimistic about the prospect of another season, telling TVLine as recently as April that the Andy Samberg comedy always “received a tremendous amount of support from the network, and I’m sure our pickup will be coming at any point.”

Goor was also confident that fans would probably “riot” were the show to be cancelled after its Season 4 finale (airing Tuesday, May 23 at 8/7c), which doesn’t sound like it’ll be tying up any loose ends.

“If you’re asking if we wrote a potential series finale, we did not,” he said at the time. “We do not want this to be the series finale.”

Speechless Renewed for Season 2

The DiMeo family has something to celebrate this weekend: ABC has renewed Speechless for a second season.
Star Minnie Driver confirmed the news in a tweet on Friday:

The family comedy stars Driver as Maya, the matriarch of a zany family whose lives revolve around special-needs son JJ (Micah Fowler). John Ross Bowie co-stars as Maya’s husband Jimmy; Mason Cook and Kyla Kenedy play younger kids Ray and Dylan. Reno 911! alum Cedric Yarbrough rounds out the cast as JJ’s smooth-talking aide Kenneth.

ABC added Speechless to its Wednesday comedy lineup, between The Goldbergs and Modern Family, and it paid off in the ratings, with the show’s September series premiere notching 7.3 million total viewers and a 2.0 demo rating. Speechless earned a full-season pickup later that month, and then an additional episode to bring its freshman order to 23 episodes. Season 1 wraps up next Wednesday, May 17 at 8:30/7:30c.

The renewal means all four of ABC’s Wednesday comedies will return next season: black-ish, The Goldbergs and Modern Family were all renewed earlier this week, with the latter two scoring two-season pickups.

Sprung off of the Academy Award-nominated 1973 film of the same name, The Exorcist averaged 1.9 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating on Friday nights, equaling or besting Fox hour-longs Rosewood (cancelled), Sleepy Hollow (cancelled) and Scream Queens (fate TBD) in the demo.

Having told a very specific (and ultimately surprising) story born of the feature film, Season 2 of the contemporary psychological TV thriller will “open a new chapter of the iconic franchise.”

Throw your hands in the air, and chung-chung ’em like you just don’t care: NBC’s indefatigable Law & Order: SVU will be back for Season 19, TVLine has learned.

The renewal brings the Mariska Hargitay-led series closer to matching the original Law & Order, which ran for 20 seasons, in longevity. (In case you’re curious: Gunsmoke also ran 20 seasons, and The Simpsons, now in its 28th season, holds the record for longest-running, scripted, primetime program.)

In its current 18th season, SVU has been averaging just under 6 million viewers and a 1.3 demo rating.

2 Broke Girls Cancelled at CBS

If you had money on 2 Broke Girls getting renewed, you’re out of luck.
CBS has cancelled the raunchy Kat Dennings–Beth Behrs comedy after six seasons, TVLine has learned.

Showrunner Michelle Nader previously told TVLine that everyone connected with the show had “the creative urge” to keep the series going into a seventh season. “This is not the end for these girls,” the EP insisted ahead of last month’s Season 6 finale, which found Dennings’ Max getting engaged to on-again/off-again beau Randy. “We’re not finished and we don’t want to be finished and I don’t think the audience is finished. Obviously there’s no guarantee that we will be back, but we did not write the episode as a series finale.”

Our sister site Deadline recently noted that negotiations between CBS and Warner Bros. (the studio that produces 2 Broke Girls) had been tense. Ultimately, the fact that CBS had no ownership in the show proved to be its undoing.

There’s no word if Warner Bros. plans to shop 2 Broke Girls around.

Baby Daddy Ending With Season 6

Ben Wheeler’s adventures in premature fatherhood are about to come to an end; Baby Daddy‘s current sixth season will be its last, TVLine has confirmed.

The Freeform comedy stars Jean-Luc Bilodeau as Ben, whose life was forever changed when a one-night stand resulted in the birth of a daughter — one he didn’t know existed until she was dropped off on his doorstep. With the “help” of his brother Danny (Derek Theler), roommate Tucker (Tahj Mowry) pal Riley (Chelsea Kane) and mom Bonnie (Melissa Peterman), Ben slowly learned what it means to be a father. Sort of. It’s an ongoing process, really.

And when the series comes to an end in just a few weeks, Danny will inherit the title of Baby Daddy, as Riley gives birth to a child of their own. (Yeah, my little summary glazed over a whooole lot of drama between Danny, Riley and Ben. Let’s just say everything eventually turned out the way it was always meant to.)

The Great Indoors Cancelled at CBS

It’s one season and out for The Great Indoors: CBS has cancelled the freshman comedy, TVLine has confirmed.

The generation-gap sitcom, starring Joel McHale as a rugged reporter for an outdoor-living magazine who’s forced to contend with a staff full of smartphone-addicted millennials, got off to a solid ratings start when it debuted last October to 8.8 million viewers and a 1.9 rating in the key 18-49 demo. In fact, it did well enough to earn a full-season pickup in November, and then additional episodes in January, bringing its freshman run to a total of 22 episodes.

But those early numbers were deceiving, since Indoors was airing on Thursdays behind CBS’ juggernaut The Big Bang Theory. The freshman comedy fared significantly worse when it moved to Mondays, away from Big Bang: The May 1 airing drew just 4.1 million viewers and a 0.8 demo rating.

Along with McHale, the Great Indoors cast included Susannah Fielding as McHale’s boss/former fling, Stephen Fry as the magazine’s founder and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Christine Ko and Shaun Brown as the magazine’s young, tech-savvy staffers.

Elementary Renewed for Season 6

It’s an 11th hour Elementary pickup, my dear Watson!

CBS has renewed up the Sherlock Holmes procedural for a sixth season, TVLine has learned.

Elementary was conspicuously missing from CBS’ sweeping renewal announcement in March, with the network doling out pickups to nearly all of its established dramas with the exception of Elementary. Although the Jonny Lee Miller-Lucy Liu series has seen its ratings erode considerably in recent seasons, it performs well internationally for CBS (a key factor in its renewal).

With Elementary set for the 2017-18 season, that leaves medical drama Code Black as the last remaining hour-long drama on the bubble for CBS.

Code Black won’t be closing its hospital doors anytime soon.

CBS has renewed the medical drama for Season 3, TVLine has learned.

An episode count (the first two seasons averaged 17 episodes) was not immediately made available.
The renewal comes after the Marcia Gay Harden drama underwent a massive revamp in Season 2, adding Rob Lowe as maverick doc Ethan Willis, a seasoned combat surgeon coming off a stint in war-ravaged Afghanistan.

Lowe’s debut last September reached 6.4 million total viewers and a 1.2 demo rating, but those ratings didn’t hold. February’s Season 2 finale drew a 0.9 in the demo, down 25 percent from the season opener, putting the show heavily on the bubble.

As a whole, Season 2 averaged a 1.0 rating, besting the already renewed Madam Secretary and Elementary, plus five other CBS dramas.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders Cancelled at CBS

There will be nothing beyond Season 2 for Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

CBS has cancelled the spinoff, starring Gary Sinise, Alana De La Garza and Tyler James Henry.

The drama, about a division of the FBI that helps American citizens who find themselves in trouble abroad, never achieved the ratings success of mothership series Criminal Minds, which was renewed for Season 13 in April.

Beyond Borders‘ final two episodes air Wednesday, May 17 at 9/8c.

Scream Queens Cancelled at Fox

The writing’s been on the wall for some time, but just for the heck of it, let’s make it official: Scream Queens will not return for a third season on Fox.

“We won’t be seeing Scream Queens this season,” Fox Television Group CEO Gary Newman told reporters Monday. “Scream Queens was an anthological series. Ryan [Murphy] told the story of the group of characters he created over the course of the two seasons. It feels as if it was a complete story. We have no plans at this point to go back there and tell more stories.”
Scream Queens‘ second season — a hospital-based disaster that featured new characters played by John Stamos, Taylor Lautner and Kirstie Alley — wrapped in December.

In case you missed the season series finale — judging by the ratings, there’s a good chance you did — here’s how things ended for the show’s collection of madcap misfits: Chanel No. 5 and Zayday are now running the hospital, Hester and Dr. Brock are living (and killing) large on Blood Island, Dean Munsch has become a world-famous “sexpert” based out of Aspen, and Chanel No. 1 is hosting her own TV talk show (with No. 3 as her producer).

The final scene also saw the return of the Red Devil, the disguise used by the killer(s) of Scream Queens‘ first season. Unfortunately, this new masked man (or woman!) was never identified, leaving us to wonder… forever.

Adding to the predictability of the show’s cancellation, several prominent cast members have already joined new projects; Billie Lourde snagged a major role in the upcoming seventh season of American Horror Story, while Lea Michele starred in an ABC comedy pilot which has since been ordered to series.

The Odd Couple Officially Cancelled After 3 Seasons at CBS

Oscar and Felix, consider this your official eviction notice.

CBS has formally cancelled The Odd Couple after three seasons, TVLine has learned.

The writing had been on the wall for the Matthew Perry/Thomas Lennon-led sitcom for months. Back in November, the network opted not to order an additional back-nine episodes for the series’ third season, capping it at just 13. What’s more, co-star Yvette Nicole Brown has already moved on; the Community vet is a series regular on ABC’s new comedy The Mayor.

Based on Neil Simon’s original Tony-winning play, which went on to inspire a 1968 film as well as the beloved 1970s ABC series with Jack Klugman and Tony Randall, Perry and Lennon starred as the latest incarnation of classically mismatched roommates Oscar Madison and Felix Unger. Yvette Nicole Brown (Community), Lindsay Sloane (Sabrina, the Teenage Witch) and Wendell Pierce (Treme) co-starred.

Training Day, Ransom Cancelled at CBS

Neither Training Day nor Ransom will be returning for Season 2.

The cancellation of CBS’ two lowest-rated and least-watched dramas, reported by TV by the Numbers, leaves the network with no shows still on the bubble, seeing as the reality-TV series Undercover Boss (which is currently airing Season 8) was picked up for a ninth cycle on Wednesday morning.

An international co-production, Ransom premiered in January and averaged 3.5 million total viewers with a 0.4 demo rating in its Saturday time slot.

Training Day launched in February, airing Thursdays-at-10 slot, but got moved to Saturdays after its numbers dipped to 4 mil and a 0.7 — and in the wake of series lead Bill Paxton’s death. Season-to-date, it has averaged 3.6 mil and a 0.6, with its finale airing this Saturday.

Arrested Development Officially Renewed for Season 5 at Netflix

That Arrested Development renewal you’ve been waiting on has at long last been formalized.

Netflix on Wednesday confirmed that it has officially greenlit a fifth season of Mitchell Hurwitz’ family farce, with the entire main cast — including Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, Portia de Rossi, David Cross and Alia Shawkat — reprising their signature roles.

The new season will bow in 2018. An episode count was not revealed.

In a shade-throwing statement that likens the Bluths to America’s First Family, series creator Mitchell Hurwitz said, “In talks with Netflix we all felt that that stories about a narcissistic, erratically behaving family in the building business — and their desperate abuses of power — are really underrepresented on TV these days. I am so grateful to them and to 20th TV for making this dream of mine come true in bringing the Bluths, George Sr., Lucille and the kids; Michael, Ivanka, Don Jr., Eric, George-Michael, and who am I forgetting, oh Tiffany. Did I say Tiffany? — back to the glorious stream of life.”

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos hinted that in Season 5 “the Bluths will collectively be spending more quality time with their millions of fans around the world,” a possible nod to Season 4’s polarizing standalone-character format.

As TVLine previously reported, Season 5 may include a major prequel element, with potentially half of the action unfolding in flashbacks featuring much younger versions of all the principal characters (played by different actors). The move would go a long way in clearing Season 5’s major scheduling hurdle (i.e. corralling the insanely busy cast at the same time) without having to recycle the maligned character-centric conceit. “More of the episodes can now include all of the original cast together, with lots of big group family scenes,” said a source.

Trial & Error Renewed for Season 2

Court will return to session at NBC: The Peacock Net announced Saturday that it has renewed Trial & Error for Season 2.

Season 1 of the midseason comedy introduced viewers to Josh Segal (Gotham‘s Nicholas D’Agosto), a bright-eyed New York lawyer who relocated to a tiny Southern town for his first big case. His mission? To defend an eccentric, “rollercizing” poetry professor (3rd Rock From the Sun‘s John Lithgow) accused of the bizarre murder of his beloved wife. Jayma Mays (Glee), Sherri Shepherd (30 Rock), Steven Boyer (Orange Is the New Black) and Krysta Rodriguez (Smash) co-star.

Trial & Error got off to an OK start, ratings-wise, when it debuted in March to 5.9 million total viewers and a 1.0 in the demo. Its season finale, however, drew just shy of 4 million viewers and a 0.8.

The 10-episode sophomore run will premiere at midseason.

Chicago Justice Cancelled at NBC

The verdict is in: NBC has cancelled Chicago Justice, the latest addition to producer Dick Wolf’s #OneChicago franchise, after just one season, our sister site Deadline reports.

The legal offshoot was not on the network’s list of Chicago renewals earlier this month, which included pickups for Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med. Next season, P.D. will hit its milestone 100th episode, while Fire and Med are headed into their sixth and third season, respectively.

Justice — which aired its final episode on May 14 — starred Philip Winchester, Carl Weathers, Jon Seda, Joelle Carter and Monica Barbaro. There’s no word yet if Seda will return to P.D. in the wake of the spinoff’s cancellation.

The Get Down Cancelled at Netflix

The Get Down is down for the count.

Netflix has cancelled Baz Luhrmann’s musical drama after just one season, our sister site Deadline reports.

The series, which was set in New York City’s South Bronx during the rise of hip-hop and the last days of disco in the late 1970s, debuted last August with six episodes, with an additional five episodes hitting the streaming service in April. It followed a collective of young musical artists and DJs known as the “Get Down Brothers” who hustled to hone their artistic craft and achieve their dreams.

The Get Down‘s cast included a host of newcomers along with Jaden Smith, Jimmy Smits, Daveed Diggs and Giancarlo Esposito, among others. It was reportedly one of Netflix’s most expensive shows, and Luhrmann (the director of Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby) had stated that he would not be as involved in a potential second season.

Veep, Silicon Valley Renewed at HBO

It looks like Selina Meyer has a bit more time to secure her legacy, while PiperChat will keep on talking.

HBO on Thursday announced that it has renewed Veep for Season 7. Additionally, the premium cabler has also renewed its Sunday-night companion, Silicon Valley, for Season 5.

Veep, which won the Primetime Emmy award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2015 and 2016, will wrap its current sixth season on Sunday, June 25 at 10:30/9:30c, following the Season 4 finale of Silicon Valley.

Quarry Cancelled at Cinemax, Creators Unable to Find Drama a New Home

Quarry will not be returning for Season 2 — on Cinemax or any alternative outlet, series co-creator Michael D. Fuller confirmed on Wednesday.

Based on the novels of Max Allan Collins, the drama starred Logan Marshall-Green as Mac Conway, a Marine who after being shunned upon his return from Vietnam in 1972 gets drawn into a network of killing and corruption. TVLine readers gave the September premiere an average grade of “B+.”

“After a protracted and agonizing process, we have final confirmation that Quarry will not be returning to television,” Fuller, who co-created the series with Graham Gordy, wrote on his blog.

“There were several factors that contributed to the show’s ultimate fate, but a regime change at HBO and a re-(re?)-branding at Cinemax were of particular significance,” he explained. “We attempted to find another home for the show but were unable to do so.

“By virtually every metric (ratings, critical response) the show succeeded in all the ways a show needs to for a second season, but, as the erstwhile Head Ball Coach of my beloved Gamecocks was fond of saying, ‘It is what it is.’ TV’s tough and life is tougher, and like the titular character of the show, the series itself was ultimately the victim of a system that is relentlessly unforgiving.”

Interestingly, Cinemax pulled the plug on The Knick in March while claiming it would be re-focusing on “high-octane action dramas.”

Underground Cancelled After 2 Seasons

Plans for a third season of Underground have been derailed.

WGN American has cancelled the period drama after two seasons and 20 episodes, Tribune Media announced on Tuesday. Sony Pictures Television — the studio behind Underground — will attempt to find a new home for the series.

“Despite Underground being a terrific and important series, it no longer fits with our new direction and we have reached the difficult decision not to renew it for a third season,” said Tribune CEO Peter Kern in a statement. “We are tremendously proud of this landmark series that captured the zeitgeist and made an impact on television in a way never before seen on the medium… It is our hope that this remarkable show finds another home and continues its stories of courage, determination and freedom.”

The cancellation follows the demise of fellow WGN drama Outsiders and ahead of Tribune’s acquisition by Sinclair. “As WGN America evolves and broadens the scope and scale of its portfolio of series, we recently announced that resources will be reallocated to a new strategy to increase our relevance within the rapidly changing television landscape,” Kern explained. “This move is designed to deliver additional value for our advertising and distribution partners and offer viewers more original content across our air.”

Underground‘s second and final season concluded earlier this month.

24: Legacy Cancelled at Fox, as Next Incarnation of 24 Franchise Is Explored

The clock has run out on Fox’s 24 reboot — but not the franchise itself.

The network has officially cancelled 24: Legacy after one low-rated season, TVLine has confirmed.

Yet given the keystone franchise’s importance to Fox, discussions are underway with producers Howard Gordon and Brian Grazer to develop a new incarnation that is more anthological, while still built around the real-time storytelling device. No Legacy cast members would be involved.

Following a strong post-Super Bowl-fueled premiere that drew 17.5 million viewers, Legacy — which tasked The Walking Dead‘s Corey Hawkins with stepping into Kiefer Sutherland’s sizable shoes — quickly lost steam and ended its rookie run in April with 3.4 million and a series-low 0.8 demo rating.

Although set in the same universe as the original 24, the reboot set out to distinguish itself from its predecessor, with exec producers Manny Coto and Evan Katz enlisting only one high-profile franchise vet — Carlos Bernard’s Tony Almeida — for Legacy duty.
