quote:At least 124 flights scheduled for Monday and Tuesday were cancelled as Typhoon Nida edged closer to the city on Monday afternoon.
This came after the Hong Kong Observatory said it would consider raising the typhoon signal from a No 3, issued at 11.40am, to a stronger No 8 between 6pm and 10pm on Monday evening.
A No 8 signal means gale or storm force winds are blowing at sea level, at sustained speeds of 63 to 117km/h, and gusts that may exceed 180km/h.
According to Airport Authority flight information, at least 42 passenger flights were cancelled on Monday, with a further 35 scheduled to be suspended on Tuesday. At least 47 flights scheduled to arrive on Monday were also cancelled.
Cathay Pacific and Dragonair announced at noon that all departures and arrivals to Hong Kong International Airport between 10pm on Monday and 2pm on Tuesday would be suspended as a result of the storm.
Cancelled departing flights included CX905 to Manila, CX709 to Bangkok, CX408 to Taipei, KA110 to Dhaka, KA996 to Beijing and a handful of other flights to Europe and Australia.
The airlines reminded passengers to check the latest flight information online before departing for the airport and encouraged them to postpone non-essential travel.

Hong Kong is preparing for the strongest typhoon this year as the city’s major airlines canceled flights from Monday night and a jewelry company warned it may postpone its shareholder meeting.
Typhoon Nida was about 390 kilometers (242 miles) east-southeast of the city as of 2 p.m. on Monday local time and forecast to edge closer to nearby Guangdong province, intensifying gradually, the Hong Kong Observatory said. The windstorm is expected to be near Hong Kong from tonight through Tuesday morning and a direct hit would have a severe effect, it said.
The observatory hoisted the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 at 11:40 a.m. It will consider issuing Storm Signal No. 8, the third-highest tropical cyclone warning, between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Monday.
“The weather will deteriorate rapidly after sunset,” the observatory said.
Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. and unit Dragonair will suspend flights departing and arriving at Hong Kong International Airport from 10 p.m. Monday until 2 p.m. Tuesday, the airlines said in a joint statement. Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Ltd. said its annual general meeting on Tuesday could be postponed.
Under trading rules, Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing Ltd. will cancel premarket trading if a signal 8 warning is in force between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. There will be no morning session if such a warning is lowered after 9 a.m. and no trading for the day if it’s still in force after noon.
Should a Storm Signal No. 10 be issued, it will be the first since typhoon Vincente in July 2012, according to Hong Kong Observatory data.
