The U.S. oil boom has time and again proven very hard to kill.
Despite OPEC's strategy of flooding the oversupplied market with tons of crude, American oil production has not fallen off a cliff. And now that prices have rallied back to $50 a barrel, there are early signs that U.S. shale is on the rebound, too.
Just look at how the closely-watched Baker Hughes oil rig count has stopped collapsing -- and started rising. The tally rose last week for the third-straight week, the longest streak since last August.
The recent uptick represents an intriguing reversal. U.S. oil rigs had declined 20 of 21 weeks up until mid-May, when oil prices hit four-month highs above $47 a barrel.
Rising rig counts could be a sign that the higher oil prices are luring U.S. oil companies to start pumping away again. That in turn may cause other drillers on the fence to add rigs of their own.
"You can get a herd mentality. Nobody wants to be the last one back," said Thomas O'Donnell, senior energy analyst at consulting network Wikistrat.

Morgan Stanley recently warned that rising U.S. supply and fading outages would renew the oversupply problem, sending oil crashing back to $30 a barrel.
"It's pretty dramatic how much costs have fallen. There have been tremendous advances," said O'Donnell.
That's why a number of American oil execs have already signaled they could start pumping more at current levels. For instance, last month RSP Permian (RSPP) said $45 a barrel is an "inflection point" that would cause the oil company to think about adding a rig. Pioneer Natural Resources (PXD) also indicated it's planned to add five to 10 rigs at $50 a barrel -- a threshold hit late in May.
Keep in mind that today's rigs can pump an average of 27,000 barrels of crude per day, according to Capital Economics. Compare that with two years ago when the average rig produced just 6,000 barrels a day. That means the rigs added in recent weeks could slow or even stop the recent decline in U.S. oil production.
"Just like people didn't know the dynamics on the downside, the dynamics on the upside are a bit unknown. Shale on the rebound is a new phenomenon," said O'Donnell.
quote:Oil Falls to Two-Month Low as U.S. Drilling Climbs Amid Surplus
Oil rigs have been put back to work in seven of the past eight weeks in the U.S., according to Baker Hughes. U.S. crude production increased a second week through July 15, according to data from the Energy Information Administration.
U.S. gasoline stockpiles rose in four of the last five weekly reports from the EIA, sending supplies to the highest levels since April. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg project that the EIA will report on Wednesday that inventories of the fuel increased 1 million barrels last week, according to a Bloomberg survey.

Shale drillers are adding the most oil rigs since crude was worth $100 a barrel as confidence that OPEC may finally agree to freeze output pushed futures into a bull market.
U.S. producers have put 76 oil rigs back to work in eight weeks, the biggest and longest increases since 101 were added a couple months before the price crash started in mid-2014, Baker Hughes Inc. data released Friday show. The count rose by 10 this week, bringing the total oil rig count to 406.
"As oil has remained in the $40-$50 range, it’s not surprising to see the rig count still advancing," Luke Lemoine, an analyst at Capital One Southcoast in New Orleans, wrote Friday in an e-mail. "With oil moving towards $50, we believe the oil rig count can approach 600 rigs over the next year."

First Oil Output Cut in Eight Years
OPEC agreed to a preliminary deal that will cut production for the first time in eight years. Oil prices gained more than 6 percent as Saudi Arabia and Iran surprised traders who expected a continuation of the pump-at-will policy the group adopted in 2014.
The group agreed to drop production to a range of 32.5 to 33 million barrels per day, said Iran’s Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh, following a meeting in Algiers. While some members of OPEC will have to cut output, Iran won’t have to freeze production, he said. Many of the details remain to be worked out and the group won’t decide on targets for each country until its next meeting at the end of November.
The lower end of the production target equates to a nearly 750,000 barrels-a-day drop from what OPEC said it pumped in August.
The deal will reverberate beyond the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. It will brighten the prospects for the energy industry, from giants like Exxon Mobil Corp. to small U.S. shale firms, and boost the economies of oil-rich countries such as Russia and Saudi Arabia. For consumers, however, it will mean higher prices at the pump.
Explorers added oil rigs in the U.S. for a sixth consecutive week after OPEC’s pledge to cut output triggered a crude market rally, allowing producers to lock in higher prices with hedge contracts.
Rigs targeting crude in the U.S. rose by 3 to 428, adding to the largest level of work since February. Producers haven’t pulled back activity since the end of June. Natural gas rigs fell by 2 to 94 this week, while miscellaneous rigs rose by 1 to 2, bringing the total for oil and gas up by 2 to 524. Despite the overall activity boost, none of the four largest oil basins added rigs.
"Companies are looking at areas that are under-explored or under-developed," James Williams, president of WTRG Economics in London, Arkansas, said Friday in a phone interview. "But what we’re going to see is continued growth in the major oil plays."
Oil breached $50 a barrel for the first time since June this week after the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries agreed to the first production cut in eight years. By resuming its policy to balance the market, the group threw a “lifeline” to U.S. shale firms and prompted them to hedge “in droves,” Harry Tchilinguirian, head of commodity research at BNP Paribas SA in London, said last week.
“Every time prices get above the $50 range we see a lot of activity coming in from producers selling into the rally,” said Hamza Khan, an analyst at ING Bank NV in Amsterdam.
Production Delcine
Crude output fell by 30,000 barrels a day to 8.47 million last week, the Energy Information Administration reported Wednesday.
The oil price recovery from a 12-year-low in February prompted producers to begin returning parked rigs to service after idling more than 1,000 rigs since the start of last year. West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark crude, fell 1.4 percent to $49.73 at 1:15 p.m. on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"If the oil price is near current levels two months from now, there’s going to be a significant growth in oil based off of the $50 price we’ve seen," Williams said. "So you’ll also see more oil drilling come November and December."
