So please STOP calling The Netherlands Holland.
There is a reason 99.9% of the world calls it Holland and even the government is doing so.

By signing the "Ackte van Verlatinge" in the Hague only 7 of the 17 became independent of the Spanish king.
Because this 'party of 7' had no king of their own they decided to become a republic "The Republic op the 7 United Netherlands"
Now Spain was no longer a power in the republic other states like England and France tried to take possesion of this new country and its wealth. To defend their harbour and trading the 'Korps Mariniers' was erected by the Grand Pensionary of Holland Johan de Witt and his Chieff of Staff Michiel de Ruyter.
Since it cost an arwful lot of money to train and maintain an army this could only be payed by the large trading cities in the province of Holland (e.g. Amsterdam, Dordtrecht, Enkhuizen).
The orther six provinces thought it was all much to expensive and they preferred a stadhouder (traditionally a member of the family of Orange) as leader of the republic in stead of Johan de Witt.
But... Holland was the only part of the republic of the Netherlands in which the other countries were interested in and it was the only part that could pay a fleet with marines (soldiers) it was the only province to be really recognized as an independent state. And that is why Holland was and is the only province that really matters.
