FOK!forum / General Discussion in English / British telly
Semisanezaterdag 2 januari 2016 @ 13:42
As this is an English subforum where English stuff can be discussed in English why not discussing British telly (and perhaps why it is argumentatively better than Dutch telly) or simply post some of your more favorite British telly:

As starter of this topic (one of the very few I actually start) I somehow feel obliged to give some sort of example or at least something funny ((funny is a bit subjective...so if you don't think this is funny you can quite right fuck off :* ). However I am lazy...so I will just post some panel show clips. You are welcome.

Actually it's an English language section, with the intention to discuss things in the English language this to open up Fok! for more people like expats in Holland, or people who emigrated long ago and lost their ability to discuss properly in the Dutch language, i can't imagine that the intention was to discuss daily life in England. I'm certain there's a telly section somewhere on this forum where this topic would fit in a better way than it does inhere.

BBC documentaries tend to be *extremely* good compared to anything else on TV.

But those guys have a huge budget I'm sure.

I used to watch Downton Abbey live on ITV. What I've noticed is that, while they have more commercial breaks, commercial themselves use to be a lot less disruptive than Dutch commercials. No yelling, no flashy colours, a British accent. It was almost a delight to watch commercials on that channel. _O-

Some amazingly good English Comedy series:

Monty Python, The Young ones, Fawlty towers, Bottom, Only Fools and Horses, Dad's Army, Porridge, One foot in the grave, keeping up appearances, Allo Allo, Absolutely Fabulous, Are you being served?, Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em.

All amazingly good Dutch Comedy series:

Does anyone know the programme called 24 Hours in A&E. It airs on Channel 4, it's an award winning documentary series on British first-aid workers and it's just really interesting.

My wife used to watch that show, it was about King's College Hospital in the beginning right? I know they switched hospitals in one of the seasons, but lost track of the series at one point. Quite interesting to say the least.

Correct! They're now filming in St. George's Hospital. It's really well made.

The documentaries made by Adam Curtis are excellent. I recently watched All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace and am watching Century of the Self at the moment. Both are very good.

The Century of the Self is about Freud's psychoanalysis and how it was used by those in power to manipulate the masses. The other is about how computers failed to live up to the expectations people had and how they somewhat distorted our worldview.

We have to make do with what the BBC offers. Granted I have BBC 1 through 4 and BBC entertainment but would like to have the option to get ITV or Sky on cable here.
